Al Porto di Lucca is a recently renovated large house with a garden, which can be dated to back to 1700. It is owned by a family from Lucca, whose origins date back to 1500. It is a bed and breakfast with 4 guest rooms, each with a private bathroom, located less than 300 meters from the walls and the historic center of Lucca, which then can be reached on foot or by bike via an underpass. The railway station is just 200 meters away, and by train there is easy access to Pisa with its international airport, and to the city of Florence. In addition to the gardens, the great hall and the veranda are at guests' disposal for breakfast.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed for six nights in this wonderful bed and breakfast in Lucca. It has been a place that we have returned to many times over the last 13 years and it is still absolutely charming. The standard of the rooms, the bathrooms, the linens and the breakfasts were as high as ever and it was a complete delight to sit out on our balcony enjoying the beautifully matured gardens and the wonderful perfume of the Jasmine. It is a short walk into the centre of Lucca and the shaded parking for our car worked well.

This B&B is run by wonderful hosts who couldn't do enough for you. They provide a superb breakfast, with rooms furnished in a traditional style and a lovely garden which you can sit in. Very conveniently located just outside Lucca's city walls (5 mins walk) and free parking is provided. It's also about 5 mins walk to the railway station (trains to Pisa, Florence etc). Although we had a car, we took the hosts' advice and caught the train to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, probably all in all 40 minutes from door to door. It was so easy and avoided any hassle with navigation and parking. They were also kind enough to print off a train timetable for that day. They also provide free bike hire - we had a lovely day's cycling, starting with an easy cycle around the city walls and then headed off along the river and into the countryside, all on quiet and flat roads. Would definitely stay here again.

We were very pleased with our three-night stay in this wonderful B&B. First, the location was ideal for us, travelling by train: easy access from the stazione and to the Lucca city gate. The room was comfortable and very quiet, the a/c functioned very well, and the wifi signal was consistently strong. Loved the shower in our room.
Madame served us a magnificent breakfast each morning, more than we could possibly eat, and absolutely delicious. The croissants were the best I’ve ever tasted. When she learned we were headed to Pisa for the day, she provided a helpful tip about getting off the train one stop before Pisa Centrale, which saved us a lot of walking.
I don’t know if fortune will bring us back to Lucca, but if so, I know where I will be staying.

We booked this B&B based on the excellent TA reviews and the consequential #2 position in Lucca. Unfortunately our experience wasn’t consistent with this.
Upon arrival, we didn’t experience a friendly creating. After paying the bill upfront (fine) we were given our room key without any further information one usually receives from a B&B host - nothing about the house facilities, opportunities to use the garden, typical tourist advice and tips etc. It was also difficult to make contact with the owner and we had to resort to email/-WhatsApp for simple requests (eg. extra tea bags)
Our room was pleasant but, as the house fronts a relatively busy road and is adjacent to a factory, there was a high degree of noise which required the windows to be kept closed to sleep undisturbed. The consequence being a very warm room which meant sleeping was compromised. We tried to switch the AC on but it wasn’t operational. In the morning, I asked the owner if he could look at the AC and he asked if we would like it switching on. Needless to say, we said yes!
As experienced travellers, I cannot recall not being able to operate the AC (when installed) and I am at a loss to understand why the owner feels the need to prevent guests from doing so.
On a positive note, breakfast was very good and the rest of staff were friendly and efficient.
In conclusion, we enjoyed our stay in Lucca but it was unfortunate that the issues outlined above compromised our experience of this B&B.

Response from Giovanna Simonelli, Proprietario at Al Porto di Lucca B&B
Responded 30 Sept 2023
I'm sorry that due to me, this guest's experience wasn't entirely satisfactory, but unfortunately, we can't always make a positive impression on everyone. In this case, however, I believe the criticisms of my behavior were excessive. I want to try to justify myself. Two days before the guest's arrival, I sent him a welcome email in which I asked if he needed any advice for his upcoming stay and let him know I was available for anything he might need. “ If you have any special requests (i.e. food allergies or preferences, allergies to feathers, restaurant reservations, etc.) please don't hesitate to inform us We look forward to your arrival and we are at your disposal for any other information you may need. “ Upon his arrival, the guest didn't ask for any advice, and I didn't press further to avoid seeming intrusive. I only got the impression that he was a bit upset that, like with everyone else, I asked for immediate payment. A few hours after his arrival, despite me being in the house, he sent me an email requesting additional tea bags in the room. No problem, I brought him right away, and he thanked me. “ Dear Francesco, Regarding our conversation at check in, you can WhatsApp our receipt to my number: …....... Also, as I don’t want to disturb you, would it be possible to have some English Breakfast tea bags for our room? Regards, Paul “ We had turned off the air conditioning a few days before because the temperature had significantly dropped, and no guest had ever complained. This guest's room, like all our rooms, faced the garden and partly the parking lot of a commercial company that, of course, is closed at night. There is no factory nearby. After the first day, I turned the air conditioning back on, considering also the increased external temperature. It seemed to me that the guest was satisfied, judging by our exchange of messages. Good evening. If we could please have the AC on again this evening that would be appreciated. Regards, Paul H Of course with 30 degrees during the day it's much better with AC. Quote unusual at the end of September Indeed. Thank you. The only thing that bothers me about this negative review is the fact that my wife won't believe my justifications and will say it was all my fault.

We were in Luca for a wedding in Pietra Santa. Al Porto di Luca served us not only as a base from where to drive through the beautiful western Tuscany region but also from where to site see in the beautiful city of Luca.
Francesco and Giovanna have turned this great old family house into the most welcoming, hospitable B&B. Its excellent location, adjacent to the train station and a short 5 min walk from the Old City make it a very central and convenient place. We walked everywhere from there.
The rooms had recently undergone a tasteful renovation.
Our room was comfortable spacious, had a beautiful balcony overlooking their pastoral garden filled with fruit trees and flowers.
Breakfast was very generous and plentiful.
They offered good advice about places to visit but were not pushy nor too chatty.
We spent eight lovely nights there and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to come to Luca.

A lovely b&b, only one hundred metres from the station, but you’d never know it. No sound of trains or vehicles of any kind reached our room, which overlooked the garden at the back. We found the entire b&b calm and restful, and with the help of the aircon, still cool when outside the late afternoon temperature was in the upper 30s.
Thanks to a nearby pedestrian bridge over the railway line, the city walls are only 5 minutes walk away, and beyond them, Lucca’s old town, thronging with tourists and concert-goers on the nights that Festival music concerts were on.
The Ai Porto di Lucca ticked all our boxes. Especially the generous breakfasts, where the food seemed to just keep on coming!
Thank you for your serenity and hospitality, Ai Porto di Lucca. You are one of Lucca’s hidden treasures!

Francesco and Giovanna, a lovely, friendly and helpful couple, run a charming B&B in their home that dates back to the 1700's. It has been renovated to a high standard and has much to offer.
The B&B is an easy 15 minute walk into the walled city. Parking is provided onsite. The rooms are spacious with air conditioning - our room had two rooms with a lovely terrace over looking the private garden. A communal sitting area is available for use and breakfast is served in the garden room.
Breakfast is more than ample, is fresh, changes each day and is delicious. A mixture of hot food and continental offerings.
Our hosts made their bikes available to ride the Lucca walls and explore the city.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Al Porta and highly recommend the B&B.

Ideally located close to the walls of Lucca and the train station. A charming spacious room with balcony and excellent bathroom, immaculately clean and blissfully quiet. The hosts are delightful and the breakfast is incredible; the scrambled eggs, mini cheese ham toasted sandwiches and freshly squeezed orange juice were delicious and set us up for the day. We highly recommend you stay.

Great location for Lucca visit, close to city center - just cross a bridge near the station to teach the city walls. Awesome breakfast with fresh juice, fruit, bread and eggs. Every day a bit different for a nice surprise. Friendly hosts who can recommend daytrips. The rooms are quiet.

From the moment Francesco greeted me at the door my two-night stay was absolutely delightful. The building has been renovated to such a high standard, providing the peace & quiet I was looking for before taking on the hustle & bustle of Florence & beyond. Lovely, laidback Lucca ticked all the right boxes while still providing cultural interest & charm
Breakfast was all that was required to start the day, taken in the delightful dining room overlooking the garden, so nice!
I will certainly stay here again should I return to Lucca
