This hotel was conveniently located not only for staying in Lucca but also for arriving and departing, which with many medieval walled cities is not always the case!
Our reception was warm and always helpful. They helped with dinner reservations and map directions for parking, which is off site about a five minute walk. (You are able to park at the hotel to drop and pack luggage but must provide the license plate number as it is in a prohibited parking zone).
Like most walled cities, the room, was a bit on the small side but it was very comfortable. The bed was large and restful and the bathroom was well stocked including bathrobes. The shower was very small so if one is larger, this may be of concern but we found it to be good and the water pressure and heat wonderful!
There is a kettle with instant coffees and tea and the breakfast buffet has a wide assortment of items to choose including scrambled eggs and bacon. Coffees are made to order and delivered to your table.
The hotel has a small but beautiful rooftop bar. Because many of the cocktails are champagne based it is a bit pricey, however the breathtaking views are well worth the cost! Reservations are recommended but we were able to get a seat when we walked up. The hotel even offered a discount on a first visit!
The Grand Universe is a lovely place to spend your time in Lucca!

Wonderful Marriott system hotel in the heart of Lucca. Overall we had a good stay, the front desk/concierge staff really make the stay memorable. They were all so friendly from the moment we checked in to every moment of our stays interaction. The one downside was our room had several physical issues, which weren't rectified efficiently. As soon as we checked in, we found the hand held shower literally came out of the wall whole and water went spouting everywhere. Also, the backlit mirror's light wasn't working. We called for someone to fix, but only a housekeeper came to clean up the water. We pinged them again to take a look and apparently an engineer came and fixed everything. No one followed up with us, but we assumed it was all fixed. Come next day (3rd day of stay), not only was the hand held completely coming off the wall again, but our mirror light was utterly spazzing nonstop. We asked them to fix again by physically going downstairs to the desk. Low and behold, what we could gather from hand motions and bits of English, the engineer basically said it wasn't fixable because they didn't have the parts. The lady at the front desk was clearly frustrated with him as well and offered to switch our room. At this point, we had 16 hours left in our stay and didn't want to waste time packing to change rooms. What the correct action to have taken was for the engineer to have communicated with the desk (and us) the issue wasn't fixable and we should have been given a new room our first night. Also, on our last night our floor smelled like sulfur/sewer. Given the ineptness of engineering we didn't bother to notify the desk, but the smell lingered well into the night. Again, the property is well appointed, beautiful lobby, quaint little outdoor rooftop area to hang out with views of the city, and even partners with a local bike shop with the first hour rental free.

Booking made 2 days prior to stay. Was able to book 20k points for 1 weekend night. Arrived to check-in around 2pm. The hotel is located in historic Lucca, which is in between Pisa and Florence (closer to Pisa). The parking here is a bit tricky since the property is located within the historic city walls, which is classified as a ZTL (zona traffico limitate, which basically means don't bring your rental here). If you're arriving by train, no biggie, but you might need a taxi if you have lots of luggage. Check in was smooth, and my status was recognized with a welcome drink, bonus points, and breakfast at the in house restaurant. I was upgraded prior to check-in to a Maestro 1 bedroom suite on the 1st floor (109), and upon walking in was greeted with a personlized message thanking me for being an Ambassador member. The room is a 2 level room, which I particularly enjoyed, but may not be for everyone given the stairs, but both the bed and the living room have view of the small square outside the hotel. The furnishings are quite nice, and feel somewhat contemporary given some of the classical Tuscan furnishings of other fine hotels in the area. I very much like the fresh feel and use of color. There's a bathroom downstairs and upstairs, of which the lower level has the shower, and the upper a nice large bath tub. Custom accoutrments such as branded bathrobe definitely show the propery is paying attention to detail. A cool addition to the bathrooms was a towel that was like the napkins you get at a nice restaurant, and it sits on top of the normal face towel. Super cool idea on that one. There's plenty of closet space, and there's actually a iron and ironing board, which seem to be less and less common in luxury properties these days. I appreciate this very much. As of May 1st, the rooftop terrace is open for a drink, although EUR30 for cocktail seems quite steep if you ask me. The gym is located on the 3rd floor, and is small but can help you burn the calories you need after having that mid-day fococcia. Breakfast was wonderful as I sat outside in the beatuful weather. The spread was typical Italian, with many American staples as well. All in all, a very pleasant and easy stay at this property, I'll definitely be coming back!!
ps, in 109 the AC vent upstairs blows directly to the bed, so you just might freeze to death lol, I slept like a baby!!

The Brand Autograph Collection of the Marriott hotel chain is one of my favorites - they adorn themselves with authenticity, consistent quality and exceptional care for the guest, and I received all of that at this hotel. The welcome by Ms. Antonia was famous and I truly felt like both an important guest and a valued member of Marriott's loyalty program. Everything was there from the welcome drink, the casual conversation, the detailed information... all you could ask for when checking in. The location of the hotel is excellent, in the middle of the old town and overlooks two large squares full of life. I arrived with my own car and there were no problems navigating and the parking was relatively close. One important piece of information is that the train station is also only a ten minute walk away. All the sights of the city are within a few minutes walk. The design of the hotel is modern and tasteful and I really liked it. The hotel seems to have been renovated and renamed a year ago, and because of the pandemic, it was practically not used at all. Needless to speak about the ultra cleanliness. There is a great restaurant in the hotel and I must admit that I enjoyed both dinner and cocktails, and the breakfast menu was also excellent. All meals can be taken on the terrace at the edge of the square, which is an added bonus. I would also like to highlight the bar on the roof of the hotel, which has a beautiful view of the city. As for Marriott's elite guest recognition - I got all the benefits I needed, and completely hassle free. All in all, this is an excellently run hotel and I hope to be their guest again soon.

This converted palazzo has been very recently renovated and feels brand new. The rooms have outstanding views of the piazza, and the hotel itself is situated in the very heart of everything. We had a corner junior suite, with soaring ceilings and windows. You can pop up to the rooftop on the 4th floor for breathtaking views of the city, the Cathedrals and the surrounding hills. Matteo and his colleagues on the front desk gave us 3 restaurant recommendations…each one different and all were truly wonderful. Riccardo in the sleek bar makes great aperitivos served with some olives and parmigiana.
We have been coming to Italy for years- this was our first visit to Lucca and we are already planning our return in the Fall. The Grand Universe hotel is the major reason for this.

Truly beautiful, serene and calming when you enter from the lovely historic square. We were greeted by the very attentive front desk staff Francesca and Matteo who went above and beyond for us ensuring we had a lovely stay after arriving late at night from a stressful trip. This is the third hotel from our 10 night Tuscany tour ( others were both 5* ) but I must say the standard of staff here were far superior and it really does make a difference. We were pleasantly surprised at the well priced evening menu, and again the staff were very helpful making superb recommendations for outside dining. Lucca is a stunning place to visit , beautiful old Buildings at every turn - parking was a 10 minute walk but Hotel can give you directions to drop off / pick up luggage outside. Just remember to leave the registration to avoid any fines driving into the fort walls ! We will recommend this hotel to any of our friends and encourage them to visit over Pisa, which was a complete stark contrast, left to return to Lucca within an hour of arriving. Thank you again for a wonderful stay and end to our trip :-)

This is a luxury hotel right in the old town of Lucca. Rooms have been refurbished recently and decorated elegantly. I enjoyed my stay but I think the "Champagne" bar is a bit useless and would be better exploited if they would serve a more ample menu of food and drinks. I also think the breakfast/dining room downstairs would need more character or cosiness.

This place is awesome. After staying at many remotely located hotels on our Italy road trip, it was great to be smack in the middle of the historic city and all the action and restaurants. Location couldn't be better, but do be aware that external parking is a royal headache. GPS doesn't work well in the city and it's not easy to find your way, but that's the tradeoff of being in the old town so it was expected. Rooms are beautiful and they did give us nice upgrades with Marriott status. High ceilings and great views of the plaza from the room. Comfy bed, massive TV, good towels, robes and slippers. Bigelow bath amenities not quite up to the caliber of the hotel (that used to be the standard brand in Holiday Inns in the US). Also it would be nice if they would provide a couple of bottles of complimentary water and/or a welcome treat of some kind. The food at dinner was excellently prepared, with good service and good pricing. Breakfast was pretty good but the pastries did not taste freshly baked. Overall though, this hotel is a great choice for a luxury and well located experience in beautiful Lucca.

A great hotel - that is an understatement. I give this, as a hotel rating, 4.5*. It falls short as a 5* but is better than, by far, 4*. The reasons for this are (1) there is no chair or desk in the room, so for business men/woman it is not practical, to say, use a PC for business. So, one sits on the bed. (2) from what I can see there is no room service food, certainly not 24 hours, which is needed for 5*. Pity, but don't let that put you off; this is a cracking hotel, on all fronts. The hotel has recently been refurbished, and my goodness , what a result. It must have cost millions. Beautifully crafted, in solid stone and high quality tiles. Subtly put together with discreet architecture and wall pictures, all thoughtfully put together. The rooms are so different, quality wood, the interior design company had a blast. Big TV. WiFi all good. Minimalist design throughout. The beds soooo comfy. A/C perfect. The bathrooms in grey, not usually my favorite color, but with this application - it was stunning. Breakfast was perfect with a high end quality smoked salmon. Staff were charming. Roof champagne bar, looking over the city, with tasty supper worked well for us. Had dinner one night, in the street restaurant, and the lamb chops were the best I have ever had in Tuscany. (We have a house in the region so I guess I know a bit about the right food.) The hotel is smack in the middle of the city. We stayed there for 2 nights, with breakfasts, evening champagne bar with a bottle. dinner and booze, in total EU.1,300.00 for two. If they want to attract business guests, they maybe should put in a business center. Great value. Go there !!

Perfect location, great staff, great cleaners, rooms pretty small, showers really small, restaurant above average and with ‘normal’ prices (inline with neighboring restaurants. No parking. Taxis will take you directly there (even tho it is in a pedestrian zone). Rooftop bar not worth it.
