Sunborn Gibraltar Hotel garners praise for its luxurious amenities, including a well-received breakfast buffet and pool area, nestled in the sought-after Ocean Village Marina, a stone's throw from a variety of bars and restaurants. While the rooms earn accolades for their cleanliness and stunning views, some guests suggest they could benefit from an update and cite noise as an issue.
The service stands out for its warmth and efficiency, although it occasionally falls short on speed. The vibrant atmosphere, coupled with the hotel's overall tidiness, contributes to its charm, even as opinions on value diverge among visitors.

We really enjoyed our stay. We had a room with runway views but if you’re a sun lover, do be warned that our side of the Yacht never got direct sun. Not an issue for us personally. The sink plug got jammed every day but maintenance came to fix it quickly . The cleaning staff kept putting it back in so it kept jamming. Room was kept very clean but could have done with a hoover. Especially under the desk - I left some suede boots there and they had a fuzzy layer of dust stuck to them when I picked them up later. We got a fresh bottle of water every day at no extra charge which was really appreciated . If you’re an anxious loo user / showerer you wouldn’t like the room layout of Superior King . The toilet and shower door do not close fully or have locks on with only a thin amount of frosted glass for decency . The wardrobe unit separating the bathroom from the bedroom also has tinted but see through doors . Be warned there is no true privacy and nothing truly separating the bathroom from the bedroom . The bed was wonderfully comfortable and they had the most amazing pillows ! All the staff were lovely , everyone greets you . I took particular note of the breakfast waiter Alexandru, who asked us how we were every morning and gave us a quick delivery of tea/coffee. There was also Mohamed who checked in with us a couple of times to make sure we were ok. And Evelyn at the Spa was amazing ! We did not like the “discretionary “ service charge on every single bill , no matter how small . Tipping should be optional . We felt mean asking for it to be removed and so we didn’t , but I feel this is done on purpose . Tipping at the spa was optional and you got to decide if, and how much , which was much more preferable, compared to the bars and restaurants . Overall - the Yacht is gorgeous , love the decor and really felt we was somewhere special . Cannot fault a single member of staff - all lovely ! Room was great , funny layout aside , and the area is also a lively and fun place . Take ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper , especially on Friday night.

Oh my! What can I say? We stayed for 2 fabulous nights and were wowed with the amazing staff who helped us as soon as we arrived. Having driven from Cádiz, we needed secure parking for 2 cars. Staff organised parking immediately, even moving other cars around to make space for us. Then someone arrived straight away to carry all the bags and get us checked in. A big thank you to all the staff who helped us that afternoon! We were offered a room upgrade to the 6th floor, into a deluxe room, overlooking the marina, for a small additional fee. This was worth every penny! The room was large and bright, with everything controlled on the phone, including curtains and lighting. Go for the upgrade if you are offered it! We loved the attention to detail like the recording of seagulls and ocean waves gently wafting through the corridors! Breakfast was plentiful, fresh and with lots of choice. Our only disappointment was the pool and bar area. This lacked a little finesse with worn plastic glasses, abrupt bar staff and loud guests. Despite this, we had the most wonderful time and will definitely return!

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
We visited here to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary; we got married in Gibraltar and return as often as we can but this was our first time staying on the Sunborn, having admired it many times from the local restaurants along the marina.
We arrived at midday and thought we might have to wait for our room but we were greeted warmly at the entrance by the Hotel Manager with an offer of a chilled glass of fizz and we were able to check in right away. We had walked over from the airport and it only took us 15 minutes.
We were asked if we were celebrating a special occasion and mentioned our anniversary would be on the 3rd day of our trip, so it was a lovely gesture to receive a complimentary bottle of cava in our room to celebrate on our special day.
The breakfast was a plentiful self service buffet, with omelettes made fresh to order. We didn't have lunch or dinner at the hotel so can't comment on that. However, we did order breakfast to our room one morning and aside from the tray charge, this was included in the price we had paid. I would highly recommend putting on the complimentary bath robe and slippers and allowing the lovely staff to bring your breakfast to your room whilst you relax and take in the views from the balcony. We particularly loved watching the planes landing and taking off.
We had the Superyacht Superior room which guarantees a runway view. The room was large and light, with a large Juliette balcony and an open plan bathroom. It's an unusual set up but it allows you to access the wardrobe from inside the bathroom, which is a perk I hadn't thought I needed in my life until now!
The room had a fridge and a chargeable mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities which were restocked daily, and a small table and 2 chairs. The lights and curtains are operated easily by the bedside phone. And most importantly, the Do Not Disturb button is on here; activate this or you will be woken by the housekeeping staff doing their morning rounds.
We visited the pool bar, this was small and wouldn't accommodate all guests if they decided to visit at once, but we found a couple of sunbeds and enjoyed the views and the 2 for 1 cocktails served to us by the lovely Maria.
The Wheelhouse Bar and Casino were closed during our visit but we did have a night cap in the main bar one night, which seemed very quiet. The hotel didn't feel busy at all but we didn't spend much time in the communal areas.
There was some building work going on below our room, which is not the hotel's doing. However, the noise was minimal and didn't start until mid-morning.
Overall, we had a fantastic stay; the staff are so polite and accommodating and the personal touches made our visit even more special. Thank you x
We are already looking to return next year.

Dear Gembob13 Happy 10th Wedding Anniversary! I'm pleased to read that you had a truly wonderful and memorable celebration at the Sunborn, and I appreciate you taking the time to share your detailed experience. Your special occasion combined with the hotel's thoughtful touches made for a remarkable stay. Starting with the warm and prompt check-in, the chilled glass of fizz, and the complimentary bottle of cava for your anniversary, it's evident that the Sunborn's staff goes the extra mile to ensure guests feel valued and celebrated. The breakfast experience you described, from the self-service buffet to the option of having it delivered to your room, sounds delightful. Watching the planes and enjoying the views while relaxing on your balcony must have been a unique and enjoyable way to start the day. Your insights into the Superyacht Superior room and its layout, as well as the various amenities provided, are valuable for potential guests considering their stay options. It's great to know that you had positive interactions with the staff, whether at the pool bar, main bar, or throughout the hotel. Their politeness, accommodations, and personal touches surely added to the overall experience. Thank you for sharing your feedback and for considering a return next year. If you have any other comments or questions or if you're looking forward to your next stay, don't hesitate to reach out. Wishing you many more joyful celebrations and memorable experiences in your future travels! Best regards, Gary Barrett

Sorry to say my experience of the Suborn was not great, I have been fortunate enough to stay in a few 5* hotels through my work and unfortunately the Suborn doesn’t come close, even though they charge the higher rate.
After a recent stay for a special birthday occasion I felt vey underwhelmed, despite letting them know in advance nothing was made to make us feel special. I know it can be an ask in the current climate, but I don’t appreciate feeling lied too in their reply Email regarding room availability, also after some online research I was disappointed that: A) NO Champagne/drink was offered upon arrival (thou the couple in front did) B) The “All you can wish for” menu is longer available- and no one new anything about it C) The room was Very Tired and the TV functions did not work - such as Listing’s and sound delay D) Room service is only done by request via the telephone and poorly E) Turn down is very basic (no chocs left on pillows Ect.) F) Standard Mini Kettle & drink Sachets (no biscuits) G) The only member of staff who showed us some attention was the morning chef - who was amazing and friendly and made the perfect scrambled egg. H) Due to the large phone - there is No left side table space for things such as medication, specs Ect, Apart from a lower shelf.
Please note to he bed is low lying and may not be suitable for the more frail, Also on our first day, the maid came in whilst I was washing up in the bathroom, and as there is no privacy door it was a surprise for both.
On the plus - The breakfast range was good, money has been spent on the social areas and reception rooms (hence the awards) and it’s convenient for the Airport and border crossing, giving you that bit more extra time, which is always appreciated and is close to the town square.
Unfortunately in my humble opinion the whole experience was poor for a 5*, and has put me off booking in March at the Sunborn London.

Dear Paul_Dearsley Thank you for your feedback. I’m genuinely disappointed to hear that your experience didn’t meet your expectations, but I would like to address some of your concerns directly. Firstly, regarding your comments on pre-arrival communication and room availability, I can assure you our team provides information in good faith based on real-time availability. We would never intentionally mislead a guest, and I’m sorry if there was any misunderstanding on this occasion. On the subject of welcome drinks, these are offered as part arrival process and I am sorry that you were not offered a complimentary drink. The “All You Can Wish For” menu you mentioned has been retired, but our current menus offer a variety of dishes tailored to guest preferences. This is available to view online at https://www.sunborngibraltar.com/dining/sunborn-gastro-bar/ Regarding the room condition, we regularly maintain and refresh our accommodations. I’m sorry you felt yours was below standard, but I’m confident this is not reflective of the norm. Had you informed us of the TV issue or any other concerns during your stay, we would have resolved them swiftly. As for your points about amenities, the design choices—such as the bedside table arrangement and the bed height—are part of the yacht hotel’s unique style and may differ from more traditional hotels. These are not faults but features of our concept. Nevertheless, we always strive to accommodate individual needs where possible. Your mention of housekeeping entering while you were using the bathroom is concerning. Our team is trained to knock and wait for a response before entering a room, and I’ll ensure this is reiterated with the team to avoid future occurrences. While I appreciate that you’ve had experiences with other 5-star properties, I’d like to highlight that we are a yacht hotel, which offers a different kind of luxury. Our aim is to provide a distinctive experience, and it’s unfortunate this didn’t align with your personal preferences. On a positive note, I’m glad you enjoyed the breakfast and it’s always lovely to see individual team members recognized, and your kind words will be passed on. While I understand your disappointment, I feel some elements of your review are subjective rather than indicative of any failure on our part. Should you wish to discuss your experience further, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly at info@sunborngibraltar.com Thank you again for your feedback. I do hope you’ll reconsider visiting us in the future to allow us the opportunity to provide you with a better experience.

Just returned from the sunborn and have enjoyed our stay. First time there and the location is very good. However i agree with other reviews not reallly 5* as parts are starting to look tired particularly the rooms which need a revamp. There is a pad to operate lights etc. i found this a bit of a ‘faff’ and just wanted a light switch to turn lights on etc. found the room cleaning on 6th floor a bit sporadic. Sometimes done early and sometimes done late afternoon after we had got back to the room. It depended who was cleaning as sometimes it was done fairly thoroughly othertimes the bed was made and towels change. Also no turn down service at night which is usually a standard in a 5*. Moving onto the pool area i understand space is limited but the quality of the sun beds is very poor. Past their sellby date and very uncomfortable. The fabric has stretched and it sags so every support bar underneath digs in. Also the drinks are very expensive unless there is a happy hour on. Then they are just comparable with nearby bars. But watch out service charge is added even though most people get their own drink at the bar. Fiinally a bit upset that the hotel never acknowledged the fact we got married whilst there. Albeit not at the sunnorn the hotel was booked by a wedding planner. We had flowers delivered to the room and also champagne ordered to the room by friends in the UK. But not even a note from the hotel

Travelled to Gibraltar in June for my 67th Birthday. Excellent stay in a Superior Room on the 4th floor, spacious and quiet. Location was in Ocean Village a place full of bars and restaurants and only 5 minutes walk to the Main Shopping Centre and Bus Station. Mornings always started with a fantastic all you can eat buffet English and continental breakfast with regular topped up tea or coffee. Service by the staff was excellent as they were constantly busy but always happy and polite. The top floor pool is tiny and more used for relaxation rather than swimming in. The restaurant food for Lunch and Dining was fine and the Aqua Bar ok for light lunches, beers and cocktails. I must give a big shout out to the Housekeeping Staff who put an endless amount of hours to keep your room clean and topped up with Tea, Coffee and water. Would I go back…? We’ve already rebooked for December

The concept is brilliant and when you first walk through the door, you're impressed. The staff are wonderful, attentive and willing to help, but then you take some time to look at the finer detail.
At only 12 years old, this hotel should have lasted far longer than it has. The decor is good but there are some major flaws creeping in.
When you get to the rooms, they have a very dated infotainment panel - it appears older than it is in styling. Then you realise that the red pleather headboard top comes away from the main headboard with zero effort, there are drill holes in the vanity and the black wooden top is splitting from water damage. There are yellow glue marks where someone has made a poor job at making repairs. This is not how a 5 star luxury hotel should look. I'm sure it did when it first opened but the shabby work that was done then, is showing now. It's a real shame.
The wifi might be free and complementary but I hope you don't want to to anything more than send a 2 word text to granny to tell her you arrived safely, because it may take a week to send, that's if you haven't been kicked off of it six times before it does eventually go.
I would like to comment on the food but the odd opening hours for the restaurants (stopping serving food at 7pm in one of them) and eclectic mix of menu choices in the other, meant I chose to eat elsewhere. Breakfast was not worth what it was charged at, despite the view. There are some wonderful places to eat around here - much better than to go there.
Finally, if you are unlucky enough to stay here when there's an event on, then bring your ear plugs. If the event is inside the hotel, you'll head every base note and ploy footsteps above , below and beside your room, through the super structure. The sound proofing is incredibly lacking. If the event is in the pubs or bars across the way, you'll have the footie on as loud as possible until all hours.

Dear CJ Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re pleased to hear that our team made a positive impression and that you found the service attentive and welcoming, that’s something we take great pride in. That said, we’re sorry to learn that other aspects of your stay didn’t meet your expectations. We fully appreciate that maintaining the high standards of a luxury hotel requires continuous investment, and your comments regarding room details and maintenance are being taken seriously. We’re already in the process of refreshing various areas of the hotel, and feedback like yours helps us prioritise improvements. Regarding the WiFi, we understand how frustrating connectivity issues can be, and we’re actively working with our provider to enhance the service. As for our restaurant hours and menu offerings, we’ll certainly review your comments with our F&B team to ensure we strike the right balance for all our guests. We also understand that noise can be a concern during events, and while we do our best to manage this, we appreciate that it may have impacted your experience. The Sunborn Gibraltar is an easy walk from the airport, 20 minutes door to door. Checking in was quick & easy as we were the only ones doing so. They could do with more seating in reception especially when there are lots of people checking in. Our receptionist was friendly & we were allocated a room overlooking the runway. The room was a good size. Did not like how open the bathroom area is. The toilet has a glass door & the entrance to the bathroom has no door so if you walk past the bathroom you can see everything! If you open the wardrobe door you can also see into the bathroom. There is no mirror in natural light in the room so go easy applying make-up. The beds were not comfy at all, the pillows were extremely lumpy & the sheets were like a cheap polyester material. The drinks cabinet has seen better days & the electric curtain mechanism was hanging off the wall. (Didn’t report this as slept with curtains open & only noticed when leaving). So very glad we had a room facing the runway as the noise & music from the bars is very loud. Breakfast was fine although was not told you could have an omelette made & only noticed this on the last day. Tea/coffee is brought to your table - we had to find a waiter one morning as after 15 minutes nobody had come & asked us what we wanted. Coffee not nice, heard a few people complain. We ate one evening meal in the Barbary restaurant, was told to book & when we arrived there was only us & one other couple. Meal was mediocre, steak was full of gristle can see why the restaurant was not busy. Tried going to the Gastro bar on 2 separate evenings for a meal & it was empty not even sure if it was actually open. Happy hour is good value but you have to wait an absolute age for your drinks to arrive. Over 15 minutes each afternoon we were there. When mentioned to a waiter that we hadn’t received our drinks they said it was happy hour & we’d just have to wait. It wasn’t that busy but only one person making the cocktails. People cottoned on to how long the drinks were taking so would order 2 at a time which then had a knock on effect for others waiting. The pool (which is tiny) had no water in it whilst we were there. The ‘wheelhouse’ deck was untidy (ketchup stains on the seats - I cleaned it off myself after 3 days). Cardboard boxes & furniture stored in the wheelhouse. Lift windows dirty. Whole hotel looks like it needs a good spring clean & updating. We thoroughly enjoyed Gibraltar & if the Sunborn was described as a 3 star then yes you could forgive some of the negatives but it was not a 5 star experience nor worthy of the cost and we would not return.

Amazing hotel! Perfect location, just 10 minutes walk from the airport. Third visit to the Sunborn, 2nd trip this year and yet again did not disappoint. From the moment we entered the hotel the atmosphere and service is amazing. Cava upon arrival is a lovely treat and makes you feel very special and looked after. Reception staff extremely helpful and make check in a breeze. Rooms are a lovely size, we love the rooms overlooking Ocean village, great size rooms, the beds are huge ! The design of the wardrobe is brilliant, can be accessed from the bedroom area and the bathroom. It’s also good to have an iron and ironing board. The large daily bottle of complimentary water is also a great addition. Breakfast is absolutely amazing, so many choices of fruit, pastries, cereals, lots of different types of bread, home made yogurt. The made to order omelettes are amazing! As well as choices of hot breakfast, and of course cava which made the breakfast even more special every day. And the breakfast waiting staff provide a wonderful and attentive service. The Aqua pool bar on deck 7 is a must ! We spent our afternoons there after a day out, chilling, the pool is quite small, but perfect size for cooling off from the heat. Really nice atmosphere there, and happy hour 5 til 7 is a bonus! Cocktails are amazing, I recommend the banana colada! The staff here were absolutely amazing again, attentive and always on the go, a very special thank you to Maria at the Aqua bar who made our experience there wonderful, so welcoming and polite, always serving our drinks so quickly and checking if there was anything else we needed, and always a smile on her face! So to sum up, the Sunborn is the place to stay in Gibraltar, I wouldn’t stay anywhere else, and I just can’t wait to return again! be sure to go on the top deck and watch the sunset it’s beautiful

Dear Natp18 I'm thrilled to hear about your fantastic experiences during your multiple stays at the Sunborn! Your detailed and positive feedback truly highlights the many aspects that make this hotel special and memorable. The convenient location just a short walk from the airport is undoubtedly a plus, and it's great to know that the hotel's atmosphere and service impressed you from the moment you arrived. The thoughtful touches like the welcome Cava and the large daily complimentary water bottle indeed contribute to a sense of being looked after and valued as a guest. I'm glad that the reception staff's helpfulness and efficiency made the check-in process smooth, and that you found the rooms spacious and well-designed, with convenient amenities like the accessible wardrobe and iron. The breakfast experience you described sounds truly amazing with a wide variety of options, and the made-to-order omelettes and attentive breakfast staff added to the overall enjoyment. The Aqua pool bar seems to be a highlight of your stay, providing a relaxing atmosphere and great drinks. Your recommendation of the banana colada and the special mention of Maria's excellent service at the bar showcase the high level of hospitality provided by the staff. Thank you for your high praise and for considering the Sunborn the place to stay in Gibraltar. I'm sure the hotel's team will be thrilled to hear that you had such a wonderful experience. If you have any other comments or questions or if you're planning to return to the hotel in the future, don't hesitate to reach out. Wishing you many more unforgettable stays and breath-taking sunsets on the top deck in the future, and happy travels to you! Best regards, Gary Barrett

Due to December events, this review of our stay on the Sunborn in November is a little late. We stayed for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed our time on this yacht hotel. Our room had everything we needed ... except for one thing ... ear plugs! We were not on the nightclub side, but had continual noise from the nearby cafes in the Marina until 1am and 2am. This is not exclusive to this hotel and we have stayed in many where there is noise outside and inside the premises. This can be for various reasons, including thoughtless guests. I have to suggest that all hotels should forgo the complimentary sewing kits in the room (keep a needle and thread at reception). Instead, provide 2 or more pairs of ear plugs. Otherwise, we enjoyed our glass of fizz on arrival, breakfast each morning, welcome smiles from the staff whenever we returned during the day or evening. Many friends are frantically trying to find a good deal to repeat our experience. Thank you, British Airways. PS - we can recommend the Salsa nights at the nearby Spanish restaurant.

Dear Proseccopeople, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are thrilled to hear you had an excellent stay and thoroughly enjoyed your stay. We are pleased to hear that your room had everything you needed, except ear plugs. We were disappointed to hear that you were disturbed by the external noises emulating from the Marina. We do have ear plugs available at reception, as well as procedure to tackle the noise coming from outside including contacting local authorities to report excessive noise. We are pleased to hear that enjoyed your glass of fizz on arrival, breakfast each morning and the smiles from our staff whenever you returned during the day or night. We are thrilled to hear that your friends are trying to find a good deal in order to repeat your experience. We look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

Hi Debbie, yes the pool is open all year, its not heated and during the winter months the water is very cold so if your thinking of a dip your very brave !! but nevertheless guest like to use it during these months
Yes, as well as free water and a charged ( but reasonably priced) minibar. The teabags, coffee, milk etc are replenished daily. If you want alcoholic drinks, remember that alcohol in Gibraltar is not taxed like it is in the UK meaning that bottles of spirits in the shops are less than half the price of the UK. So we didn't actually touch the minibar.
There are more places to choose from in the Gibraltar area.
