The Rock Hotel's 1930s origins are evident in the subtle colours and timeless decoration combining an element of the colonial with more contemporary touches. Ideal for business or leisure, the hotel offers complimentary wifi and smartly designed work or rest areas. The soul of the Rock Hotel lies in its charming decor and friendly and accommodating staff. Bedrooms are elegant and refined and offer the ultimate in comfort. The spacious windows and balconies let the Mediterranean sunlight in and provide breath-taking views of the Bay and Straits of Gibraltar. Each room offers its own unique welcoming atmosphere to make you feel at home. Guests begin the day with a hearty breakfast in the elegant Restaurant and Wisteria terrace. Later in the day, a modern style lunch is served followed by fine dining in the evening. The stylish and sophisticated surroundings are enhanced by the flavours of Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine as well as the carefully selected wine list. The Lounge Bar is the perfect place to enjoy a coffee, afternoon tea, cocktail or delicious snack, paired with one of the most impressive views of the world - where Europe meets Africa - the bar is open as from 12 noon till midnight. Errol Flynn, Alec Guinness, Andres Segovia and Winston Churchill are just some of the famous names that appear in the historical guest books.

Our room was lovely with views overlooking the sea. Some reviewers have said the views aren't scenic but we loved watching the commercial boats, cruise ships and luxury yachts coming and going - and the sun setting over Spain! We were also there for National Day so had the best view of the fireworks over the harbour.

The room had everything we needed on arrival, and the water, teabags and milk were topped up daily. However, often supplies in the bathroom were not replenished, especially the shower gel. The penultimate day we were there, the flannel and hand soap were removed and the shower gel again was not replaced (we had an extra shampoo instead!). Despite hanging the towels up every day to show we were happy to reuse them, they were also changed daily!

The location is about 20 mins walk away from Casemates Square up a fairly steep hill but is next to both the Botanic Gardens and the cable car. There are buses but we chose to walk to get some activity in our day. The pool is over the road which is quite difficult to cross due to the speed and frequency of the cars and bikes. Not sure what the hotel can do to help but perhaps a zebra crossing or a small footbridge would be helpful for those who are a bit slower.

We ate at the bar twice and the food was delicious. Breakfast was a buffet and was plentiful (with very tasty mushrooms!). Getting a coffee was a bit hit and miss as you're relying on the staff who, although very lovely, are very busy. Perhaps a coffee machine would help instead.

The pool doesn't open until 10am presumably because the sun needs time to come over the top of the Rock and hit the pool area. There are towels available at the pool bar. The girl at the pool bar (I've forgotten her name) was absolutely lovely, really friendly and efficient. We ate lunch there most days - share a sandwich because the portions are large!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, despite a few guests who were bit a noisy by the pool on occasion.

We would come back and stay again at the Rock.

We have just spent four nights at The Rock and must say our stay was excellent. Our second floor room had a lovely sunny balcony looking out towards Spain and the constantly changing merchant shipping in the bay. Our room had a very comfortable double bed, an excellent shower with endless hot water a great flow from the drench shower head . The TV in the room had literally hundreds of channels including BBC 1 , ITV , Sky etc. The food was outstanding. I recommend the ravioli as a starter. It’s a long time since I ate food with so much flavour. The breakfast options from full English to Spanish pastries and everything imaginable in between were outstanding. All of the staff were lovely and helpful and particular credit to Barry the porter who was friendly and a great source of information and also to Mr Ghazi ( after whom the hotel bar is named as an acknowledgement of his over fifty years service ) who is an absolute gentleman of the old school, smart , polite and professional. We treated ourselves to afternoon tea in the restaurant and that was perfect , a bargain at around £21 each. The pool is literally across the road and was a great place to relax, soak up the sun and even grab a light bite to eat. I would describe the hotel as four star excellence but not pretentious which allowed for a relaxing and comfortable break. The hotel is well served by the number two bus route from Market place on the route to Europa Point. The main shopping street is only a ten minute walk away from the hotel. The bus system in Gibraltar is excellent and for £6 a day you can buy a day ticket from the driver which gives you unlimited use of the entire network. The cable car to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar is only a five minute walk from the hotel. In conclusion highly recommended and great for a break.

The location of this hotel gives fabulous views-especially if you are interested in ships as I am! The fact that it is located on a hill may make it unsuitable for some as you need to cross the road get to the pool area and it is uphill going back into the hotel. The bus stop is right outside the hotel and the service is cheap and excellent.
We had a junior suite which had a large, comfortable bed with effective aircon and a balcony with table and chairs. There was a bottle of Cava in an ice bucket greet us and there is a fridge with bottled water provided daily. This room was spacious and had a large bathroom all in all , very comfortable.
Breakfast is a buffet of hot and cold which we enjoyed on the terrace 3 out of 4 mornings with those views! They cook eggs to order and bring coffee and other drinks to the table.
There were many repeat clients staying, many of whom appear to come every year. I overheard someone saying they had been coming for 15 years!
One or two minor niggles : the coffee at breakfast is poor. The swimming pool is nice though needs more regular skimming as there were some dead insects floating around which is a bit off-putting.
We would choose this iconic hotel if we were to return to Gibraltar.

The hotel was part of a British Airways package and the first couple of days were fine however as the week progressed standards fell dramatically as the hotel got busier.
Clearly at breakfast there were not enough staff therefore guests were left waiting for tables, cutlery and crockery with cries of"sorry sorry very busy"

There were similar staffing problems during the evening period with some food being little better than lukewarm by the time it arrived. Be aware that unless you put the sign out on your room door handle nobody will clean, change towels or linen. Although seriously understaffed they are very hard working and friendly.

When we complained about the state of the room they sent someone who just folded the dirty towels and put them back so we decided to suffer the same bed linen until the end of our stay.

The hotel management needs to take a good hard look at itself instead of relying on past glories.

Their concierge Barry was superb and tried to make things right. 5 stars for him.

It was our first visit to Gibralter and the Rock Hotel which had been so highly recommended by friends.
Maybe our expectations were too high but.... The room was so badly insulated, the corridors so echoy, that it was impossible to relax or sleep. We were moved finally to another room which was quieter but not exactly spotless. Paint on floors, grout missing in tiles, mouldy corners in the shower and the toilet so close to the screen that you had to sit sideways to use it.
The bed was so soft that you could feel the base.
Every step someone took in the corridor or in their room was amlpified thanks to the laminate floors.
Other than the bar and restaurant, this felt like a generic corporate hotel rather than its reputation for an historic hotel steeped in history.

The terrace did have a beautiful view but had paint peeling, dust everywhere and the table a chairs were so basic.

The big Positives were the staff who were charming and very accommodating.
The bar area is lovely.
We enjoyed a good meal in the restaurant for our anniversary.

But, for the price, which is the most expensive we paid on our road trip (which included a Parador in Cadiz) we felt very let down.

We were visiting friends who live on Gibraltar and chose The Rock hotel because we like historic hotels and by coincidence our friends live in the apartments next to the hotel. From looking at the website we were expecting a hotel similar to Reids on Madeira.

I booked the Grand Terrace Suite directly with the hotel and made a reservation for dinner on the first night of our four night stay.

We arrived and immediately on check in were asked to pay up front, in full for our stay.

The suite was clean but rather tired and the bathroom needed a complete refurbishment. The shower was over the bath but the bath was very high so getting in and out of it was not easy. There was a handrail by the shower head but there should have been one to hold onto as you get in and out the bath. The shower curtain had seen better days and this was supposed to be their best suite.

There was a bottle of sparking wine as a welcome which was a lovely touch and appreciated.

There were very few hangers in the wardrobe, the type that clip onto the rail. I phoned down and asked for six more hangers and was told they are only allowed to give guests and extra three hangers per room? The hangers were delivered promptly but as they didn’t have the tabs to fix to the rail they were useless. Eventually some more hangers arrived but they were the very cheap plastic ones dry cleaners provide. And this is supposed to be a four star hotel and the best on the Gibraltar.

Dinner on the terrace that night was good, the service was efficient and the food well cooked a presented.

Breakfast is a buffet in the dining room. The food again is very good and the selection excellent. The hotel makes all its own pastries. The staff wheel industrial catering trolleys around collecting plates while guests are eating so they clatter around the dining room and you feel like you are eating in a works canteen. We did notice people having boiled eggs and omelettes but nobody told us you could order these. Delivery of tea and coffee was horribly slow apart from when one petite waitress with tattoos was serving and she was very efficient.

One morning we asked Reception to order us a taxi for that evening. They forgot so we had to wait twenty minutes for one to arrive. The day before we left we asked the hotel to order us another taxi to take us to the airport the following morning. They told us they weren’t able to do this and we would have to do this in the morning.

This is a four star hotel. If they have such a poor relationship with taxi drivers then invest in a mini bus to take your guests to and from the airport. It could be built into the cost of the rooms which are charged at four star rates.

Our friends told us the hotel is owned by a family and one of the relatives runs it as a bit of a hobby. The Rock needs some investment and it could be restored to its former glory, but if it’s neglected, as it clearly is now it has a very bleak future.

Another lovely visit…the hotel has changed over the years but retains its charm. No more decanters of sherry and whiskey in the rooms or little apes hanging off your key ring but the staff are as attentive and efficient as ever.
Food and service in the restaurant was exceptional and dining on the terrace a delight.
Just a couple of negatives we paid for a junior suite which was very nice but it had a side view of harbour and therefore no sun at all so the location of the room did not warrant the extra cost. Also beware of the castors on the beds, these would be no problem on carpet but on wooden floors its like getting into bed that’s suspended on roller skates, they move very easily and could be an issue for some guests.

Me and my daughter stayed for 3 nights.
This hotel ticks all the boxes from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.

Upon arrival our cases were taken from the taxi and taken to reception. Later whilst waiting for our room they had already been delivered to it.

It has to be said the staff are amazing from the cleaners to reception to restaurant and bar staff they are friendly helpful and they have a great attention to detail and are welcoming and smile

The room had everything. Amazing view with a huge balcony, lovely beds , bath robes , wash products , tea and coffee making facilities , large tv with loads of channels inc sport. Shower was excellent and loads of towels, air con and a free safe , complementary spring water each day and English plug sockets

We were breakfast only but the breakfast was perfect, excellent full English avaliable , fruit , cakes , juices and cereal. tea and coffee served by the staff with a lovely outdoor terrace avaliable and is served till 10.30am

Bar is lovely with a good selection of drinks available

The pool is stunning with a great view of the rock itself . There’s a payable pool bar with showers , changing facilities and we got a sun bed without the usual all inclusive stampede like at other resorts.

The hotel is situated on the side of the rock my advice is you can walk into town and to the harbour but get a taxi back about ÂŁ6 as the hills a killer

The hotel is clean and we had no noise at night . It was a throughly enjoyable stay and my daughter loved it. Thankyou to all the staff for all your hard work it’s appreciated

Small minor points which is the reason I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars

1. No evening entertainment whilst I visited
2. Bar maintained erratically and had to wait a few time due to people waiting and staff not present
3. After an early flight the room wasn’t ready till 3 pm we was shattered and just wanted to get a sleep for an hour

We will be returning definitely

This is a hotel you really want to love.

The setting is fantastic, slightly out of town above the botanical gardens and with every hotel room overlooking the busy bay area. And the history of the hotel demands affection with art deco interiors proudly proclaiming its past grandeur. But sadly 'past grandeur' is the reality as it rough edges appear at every corner. The staff are fantastic and the swimming pool seems to be the best hotel pool in Gibraltar (although a few more sun beds wouldn't go amiss) but the rest of the hotel is let down by the details. From doggy scrambled eggs and hash browns at breakfast (you can order better eggs direct from the kitchen if you ask) to WiFi that isn't worthy of the name (neither my wife nor I could connect our phones) the hotel leaves constant frustration. By far the biggest culprit in this department is the air con. As we sat around the pool we could hear other couples express their confusion and frustration with the air con. Ours failed to work for two of our four nights leaving little sleep in a hot and stuffy room. It was quickly fixed by maintenance in the morning but it's clearly a known issue. What makes it worse is the way the hotel master controls override your room settings. Air con turns off at 10pm regardless so if you've gone to bed before that you'll wake up a hot sweaty mess. You have to reset it for the night after 10pm. Again, at 8am the air con turns off regardless waking you from your sleep as the fan turns off. I'm sure there are good intentions behind this but I've never seen air con executed so badly in a hotel - and Gibraltar needs air con.

It's such a shame because it really is a charming hotel. If we returned to Gibraltar we'd probably give it another go but I really hope that management make the tweaks necessary to allow The Rock to be truly lovable.

The Hotel is Iconic. It has the most amazimg Sea Views. We had two double rooms which were spacious and clean. Tea coffee making facilities which you could have topped up at anytime of the day or night. Could also ask for other items such as mint tea free of charge. The was a very useable fridge in the room which we stocked ourselves with local beer and water. The beds were extremely comfortable.
The Rock Hotel Team are one of the best we have come across. nothing was too much trouble. we were always welcomed with a smile and a chat. We took our 91 year young Mother in law with us and they treated here like a queen.
The consiege David and Barry helped us every day getting Mum in and out of Taxis. Helping her in the lifts etc. She is very capable so they were not patronising. The team all took an interest in our trip as it was an ancestor meet up.
The room maids ensured we had everything we needed. supplied non slip bath matts for our shower trays and extra toiletries on request. We will be back soon!
