This is a lovely hotel well situated close to the city centre and despite being just off a very busy road, it’s very tranquil. The property has been beautifully refurbished in the public areas and our bedroom was equally impressive. On the downside, the hotel does not have full dining facilities but right opposite is the Bidaia Hotel with an excellent restaurant (see separate review). Breakfast is offered but rather expensive if you’re not hungry. Instead, we had a cappuccino and pain au chocolat at The Simpsons café overlooking the beach at about €3.00 each. It’s about 10-15 minutes away by foot. Overall despite its limitations, we would happily stay here again.

Stayed for a long weekend and at all times felt like I was staying in a "special" hotel. Although about a mile out of town, it was not a problem - a 15 minute or so walk along a quiet, wide pavement which no matter what time - day or night (and a couple of very late nights) everything felt safe. The hotel has plenty of parking (at 10€ per day) and the room we stayed in was large - with our own "garden" area with a couple of sun loungers (although not needed in December). We stayed in the stable block rather than the main house. There was a very large bed, coffee machine, table, couple of comfortable chairs, room safe, built in wardrobe and a large bathroom which contained a large bath, a double length shower and bidet. Also in the bathroom was a hair dryer. The toiletries were by Diptyque, the robes large and comfortable. The towels huge and high quality. In the wardrobe there was a room safe as well. The room had blackout blinds (which I adore) and certainly didn't let the light in. The bed was king-sized and very comfortable. Although we didn't use the free cycles to explore the town, they were offered. Breakfast was both continental as well as cooked and choice was wide including fruit, cereals, meats, yogurts - the restaurant area was large. Although not a coffee drinker, my wife said it gave a much needed kick first thing in the morning. Breakfast runs from 08:00 through 11:00. It was a good breakfast. Didn't eat in the restaurant - couldn't see the point being you go to San Sebastian for the food in the town, not the hotel, although I would expect it to be of good quality Although lacking a pool, the hotel does have a gym (which wasn't used). One night we went back to the hotel bar and spent a good hour talking with the barman who was excellent. All staff we encountered were incredibly friendly and informative and are a credit to the hotel. I'm no Spanish speaker, and all spoke English. The lobby is manned twenty-four hours a day. On the day before we arrived, I received an email from the hotel asking if there were any special requirements and I thought that was a wonderful touch. The hotel is a converted house and is incredibly elegant. The decor is first rate, the stairway as you enter is beautiful to look at and the country house hotel feel is quality. Entrance is via a locked gate (accessible via the hotel key) and provides a degree of exclusivity . Having been to San Sebastian before (and likely to go again) this was my first visit to the Hotel Villa Soro. I would happily stay here, and would look forward to staying again on my next visit.

Setting and location are 5-star--well located beautiful property a longer walk/short cab ride to the center of San Sebastian (we did both) and a lovely retreat from touring the area. Service is friendly and superb. There were too many nits though--we had premium rooms in the main building for most of our five nights that were spacious and well appointed but there was an immediate hit of mildew when you walked in. These rooms also had minimal natural light. The shower had a slow drain (similar problem in our one night in a "Garden" room) which is unacceptable in a property at this level. There were not sufficient unswitched plugs to accommodate the modern traveler. Breakfast was ordinary and it was hard to get sufficient coffee for two without several reorders for the small serving pot. Garden room, though smaller, was a better set up and would recommend based on the price/value equation.

2 couples enjoyed a superb stay in this easily located Hotel, safe parking was a must for us. Taxi's took about 6 minutes in and out of the town so worked extremely well. Our rooms located on the 2nd floor of the hotel were lovely, offering a lift when necessary. A very nice ground floor terrace, and delightful lounge/sitting area. Staff were most welcoming, pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was delicious with a choice of cooked if required all set in a very light and airy dining room. Furnishings excellent. Pleased to recommend. Lovely, luxurious hotel with helpful and friendly staff. Breakfast was a particular highlight of our stay. We also borrowed bikes for an afternoon which was great. One downside of our stay was that we were in basement room 1, which was beautiful and felt luxurious, however there is no bath and the room is directly below the dining/kitchen area and the soundproofing is inadequate. We could hear heavy footsteps and furniture being scraped across the wooden floor which woke us on both mornings before 7.30am making it difficult to relax, which is disappointing considering the price paid. We would have asked to move rooms had we been staying for longer and did mention this to concierge upon check out and we were thanked for our feedback. The room would also benefit from a full length mirror. There isn’t a mirror in the bedroom at all, only one in the bathroom which was a pain when trying to get ready for the evening. We would definitely return to Villa Soro but would avoid a basement room next time.

Dear Isabelle, Thank you very much for choosing Villa Soro during your travel plans. We appreciate your time in evaluating your stay. We are very eager to know that you enjoyed our breakfast with local products and our free bike service. We are sorry to hear that the sound prrofing was inadequate, as is a XIX century building there are some issues that we should manage by being cautelous while starting berakfast in the morning. Do not hesitate that we will check our morning protocols to find the best solution. We do hope to see you soon back at Villa Soro to enjoy San Sebastian. Bets regards

You get a feeling that you’ve made the right choice of hotel quite quickly. It’s the professional but friendly welcome from smart, young staff. It’s the serene atmosphere in the beautiful public areas. It’s the iced water or coffee whilst you wait half an hour for your room to be ready. It’s the down pillows, the quality toiletries, the comfortable beds. We stayed 3 nights in the beautiful city of San Sebastián, and Villa Soro was a really lovely peaceful base to come back to each day. It is an easy 15/20 minute walk into the main sites in the city, and taxis are plentiful and easy to get. Breakfast in the hotel was high quality with pastries, cheeses, ham, with eggs, bacon, mushrooms etc all cooked fresh to order. Yes there are cheaper places to stay, but if want a beautiful hotel, full of character and style, with great staff, and luxurious touches, then I think Villa Soro would be an excellent choice.

Super hotel! very nice rooms! but the biggest minus for us is that the bar closes at 23:00 and no one warns about it, it will be good to make an honesty bar system in this hotel or have an alcoholic mini bar in the room, because there are no bars around the hotel. Thank you Virginia , you are the best ❤️

A beautiful elegant hotel with friendly, efficient staff. An absolute delight - felt more like a home than a hotel. The beds were comfy with fabulous sheets. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. A special thank you to Pablo on reception who organised massages for my husband and I at late notice and recommended we stop off at Hondarribia on way back to the airport which was a lovely experience. Also the lovely ladies that served us at breakfast. A super team at Villa Sorro - you should be very proud! We will be back! Sue & Colin

We had such a great experience staying at this gorgeous small hotel. It felt like a luxury time capsule, with beautiful decor and an incredible sense for detail and respect for the history of the villa. The staff was great and very attentive in a nonpretensious kind of way. The level of service was exceptional. We both got massage sessions and although there weren’t any time slots available that could fit our schedule at first, extra staff was called in so we could get the treatments anyways. We have stayed in many luxury hotels, but this place was truly a unique experience. The only regret for us is that we only had one night in here and didn’t have time to extend our stay.
