We ended up off Jean Jaures alleys as the sofitel was a bit too expensive for our budget and got in Hotel Riquet.
Ok, I have to admit the facade looked a bit dodgy, but it was very different indoor... Although it's a very old place, it still looks cosy and a massive plus is its staff, which happens to speak english fluently, the receptionist was really helpfull (and had quite a posh accent lol) his recommandations for restaurants, sightseeing, and especially wines were very accurate to say the least. You should try a restaurant called "elixir"; small, friendly and tasty!
We both felt looked after and that is very rare in french hotels, especially 2 star's. We litterally stuffed our faces at the breakast buffet, which was a really good value for about a fiver! They don't serve any eggs or bacon though... But it's still cool.
There are kids living there, probably the owners' but the place still remains quiet. On the minus side: no air con which was a bit tough at times as we went there last August!!
Prices are reasonable considering you're 10mn away from the capitol... We've had an executive room which was lovely and costed us only 65 quid.
We'll definitely get back there.
When I arrived home, I realized I had lost a very special hat I'd bought. I called the places I'd been the last day and discovered that a large and busy restaurant had the hat. They were not readily able to deal with shipping it back and I was afraid it would "disappear."
So I called Hotel Riquet and asked if perhaps a staff member might be willing to walk several blocks and rescue my hat in return for some compensation for their time. In fact, the owner herself walked over for me the next morning and sent my hat by mail, charging my credit card. Wow! How's that for incredible service?!
The staff is super friendly and restaurant recommendations were excellent, particularly Jules. The location was very convenient for arriving by train and departing by the airport shuttle at the train station. We loved Toulouse and will be happy to return someday.
I don't have much to add, the quality of the establishment is consistent with the price.
A positive point ? The 24-hour casino at the end of the street...
When we arrived I enquired as to where I could park. I was aware I would be charged extra but I was told my a most unhelpful man on reception that there was no parking available and that I should park on the street and feed the meters every 2 hours (hardly practicable). When I complained that no where on the website did it say you needed to book parking instead of offering an apology he rudely snapped that they only have 5 spaces and it's not his fault 15 people brought cars.
We arrived at 2 (the stated check in time), yet no room was available until 2.45, again no apology offered.
Our booking confirmation from hotels.com clearly stated 2 adults, standard double room, free breakfast. A very rude woman (who I assume is a boss or owner) told me it would be 15 euros for breakfast as only one free breakfast was included in the booking despite the booking being for 2 adults. Nowhere on the booking does it say this. What an absolute joke - I've never heard of any such policy in any hotel! Even when challenged she was unapologetic and short. As you can imagine I was very angry before even arriving in our room, but when I saw the state of it I was astounded. €110 for a standard room and it was a disgrace. Tiny, almost impossible to walk past the end of the bed, worn bedding, stains on the ceiling, no air con (again despite the website stating climate control), hard lumpy beds and very noisy. (See attached pictures to get a feel of the standard of hotel). Given how rude the staff were at check in and their obvious lack of understanding of customer service I didn't bother complaining about the room, but have instead lodged a complaint with hotels.com and Expedia as I really feel they should not offer this hotel.
Toulouse is a lovely city that I would happily return to, but my advice to anyone would be to avoid hotel Riquet at all costs.
After our trans-Atlantic flight we were elated to find a comfortable bed, all the amenities, and a hair dryer in the room. As it turned out, that was the last hair dryer I was to see in France for the next two weeks.
The room was average in size, very clean, and we were welcomed at breakfast the next morning in a bright, breakfast room.
The friendliness of the staff, combined with the Hotel Riquet's location to the business district, to the train station, and close to the shuttle to the airport connection, made this hotel a highlight of our vacation.
After we finished our two week cruise on the Canal du Midi, we returned to the Hotel Riquet for our last night in France before we departed back to the States. It was just as good the second time.
It's not the fanciest hotel I've ever been in, but it is indeed staffed by the friendliest people. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a comfortable place to stay and don't need to stay in a prestigious location (for whatever reason that might be)
If ever in Toulouse, we will return. .. perhaps next year.
