In the 18th century this hotel used to be a coaching inn and it represents a History lesson in itself. It was called the “Hôtel de France” and became the “Hôtel de Paris” in 1855. It was the favourite address for a large number of learned persons from the higher realms of culture and politics. Even the stones have retained the memory of Prosper Mérimée who stayed here in 1836, of Jules Michelet the famous historian, and even of George Sand and Colette the unforgettable women writers. From this prestigious place the visitor can find the most remarkable monuments and museums. It is also the starting point for nice walks in the historical town centre, hemmed in by the loop of the river Doubs. The setting gives the feeling of a lively inhabited residence where spring generates a delicious woody smell, rising up from the two inner yards, with their totally safe car parks situated at the back of the buildings. On the shaded terrace the visitor enjoys a luxurious moment of calm and can have a quiet breakfast or relax after a busy day. The view on the roof tops and on the forts which surround the town is fascinating. The sun glows into the quiet yards where the fifty rooms have been totally restored to offer a special moment beyond time. With its contemporary and ancient styles which coexist in harmony, the hotel breathes a real atmosphere of serenity. One will appreciate the particular attention paid to the comfort of the bedrooms. The cosy lounges offer original spaces to rest and meditate and the fitness room is the good idea to keep up one’s form. Two well equipped rooms allow people to organize events and conferences in very good conditions. Thanks to the young and dynamic new owners with their good elegant taste, this “hotel de charme” has become a spirited place with its three star service. It is now a jewel in the heart of Besançon.
We very much enjoyed our 1 night stay in Hotel de Paris. Situated very nicely in the center of Besançon. They have a safe parking for the car so you don’t have to bother to take everything out. The service is excellent and they speak English very well. We had a large nice room and the bed was perfect.
The Hotel is located in the center of the city, main entrance facing the pedestrian zone. It has a parking from where you can access the hotel directly. You should pre book it. The receptionist was friendly, our room was well sized, even with an extra bed put in it for our 12 yr old daughter. The hotel has nice design features and is very clean throughout. The breakfast is worth the money (10€ p.p.) Restaurants are very close by, we used the one next door and had a nice meal there. Overall this hotel is very recommendable, even if it's a bit pricy.
Hotel looks great and has a fantastic location. But cleanliness was so-so and in particular the fridge was filthy. Also the air-condition in our room was faulty/old so the compressor kept us up all night. :-( Will try another hotel next time.
The room was pleasant enough but you have to go down a long, long corridor to get to it. If you have a car make sure you reserve a parking space with the hotel. If you don't you may, like us, have to park a few blocks away in a public parking lot.
Recommended! Been to Besançon a number of times and often walked past the entrance to this hotel (but never gone in). Rated No1 on booking sites... well folks, yes, it’s lovely. It’s an odd mix of old and new styles. We managed to book a €140 luxury room for about €81... The hotel is centrally located and has secure private parking. Breakfast was €13, looked good, but we didn’t have time for it (but they will sell you a coffee). Since we seem to go through Besançon every year, we shall definitely return.
