My wife and I spent a few days at the Straven Guest house for our 30th anniversary this year. Sinead and Chris were perfect hosts. The rooms clean and comfortable and the beach literally a 30 second walk from the front door. We both highly recommend a visit.

Hi Chris & Sinead, Just to say thanks so much for the stay this weekend. You were both incredibly welcoming and friendly, and really went the extra mile to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. We loved the personal touches like the homemade shampoo, delicious breakfasts, and even giving us towels for us to swim when we had technically already checked out. All the best with the roof repairs over the winter (I think you'll need it with the Scottish weather!). I'll be convincing anyone thinking of a trip to Edinburgh that there really is only one place to stay. Thanks again from us both for such a lovely stay. Best wishes, Mark & Libby

Straven is a wonderful retreat with views of the ocean from our bedroom…sleeping to the sounds of the waves! And with a 2 minute walk we took Bus 26 right to the middle of town to enjoy all the sights of Edinburgh. Chris and Sinead are great hosts, providing recommendations for dinner, etc. We stayed in Room 3 which was quite large with a sitting area and a nice bathroom. There is a guest lounge as well. Breakfast was delicious! Many choices and many homemade. Parking was right in front of the Bnb which was important for us. We parked our car for 3 days and took the bus to town or walked to dinner. Clean, very well decorated, and comfortable bedding as well as a small crib in our room. We would love to return again and would definitely stay here again. We loved it here!

There’s not much I can add to the many five star reviews Straven Guest House and it’s wonderful hosts have received except to say they are all well-deserved. Chris and Sinead are dedicated to their guests comfort and needs resulting in probably the best hospitality value in the area. My stay in lovely Portobello will linger in my memory for a long time as one of the best short holidays I’ve ever had in no small part due to the gracious hospitality I experienced at Straven Guest House.

Simply superb One minute walk from Portobello beach, 2 mins from bus to central Edinburgh. Plenty of free on-street parking. A beautiful, well-maintained Victorian villa, spacious and comfortable rooms (very comfy beds). Lovely breakfasts. Our hosts were friendly & couldn’t do enough for us. Forget the big impersonal hotels, support these small, independent establishments and see how it should be done. We’ll be back…!

All I can say is I cannot find fault in this place. The rooms are beautiful, super close to the beach and bus stops where you can catch the bus straight intotThe heart of Edinburgh and its a great price. The breakfast is out of this world I just cannot praise this leave enough. Deserves more than 5 stars in my opinion

Immediately felt that our stay was going to be good as our welcome was truly warm. Lots of information about the area was to hand, our hosts had genuine enthusiasm for their home town. Fabulous and very thoughtful selection for breakfast which could not have tasted more delicious, lots of home made treats. Rooms spotless clean and everything that you could need for a comfortable and relaxing stay was available

Frankly, from the first moment I felt more like I am visiting relatives than paid accomodation. From fantastic breakfeast choices (extremly friendly towards gluten free diets) to every detail of the rooms and shared spaces, everything well described, everything well thought through and well taken care of and most importantly, everything fantastically clean - I don't think I've seen carpet with colors this bright in my whole life. As I told the landlady, the place is a swimming pool away from five stars, though you don't mind because the beach is literally few steps from the house. Quiet neignbourhood couple minutes by bus from the city center, shops and restaurants around, I honestly can't thing of the tiniest complaint even if I try. I had fantastic time in Edinburgh and for the large part due to this house offering more comfort than many hotels ten times more expensive. I can only recommend, now stop reading and book it before somebody else will!

King sized bed, spotlessly clean, usual tea & coffee making facilities but also a pod-type coffee machine available in the shared living room. Excellent breakfasts. Sinead and Chris are lovely hosts, they were a great help with local transport and recommendations for eating out. Bus stop is 100 yards away and has direct service into the centre of Edinburgh (stops right outside Waverley station), takes about 20 mins. 20 yards from the front door you're on the seafront at Portobello, nice walk along the front into the town centre.

Me and my partner came for our anniversary and had a wonderful time. The owners were helpful and always willing to go the extra mile. They showed us bus routes and tourist spots and were really friendly. The room was beautiful and very clean, and me and my partner both thought it was the best bed/pillows we’d ever slept on! The food was amazing, there was a vast variety and you could pick quite a few options. Unfortunately I was under the weather so didn’t get to eat much of it, but my partner really enjoyed it. Also there’s dairy-free options and they have lots of different types of tea. Thank you both for a wonderful stay!
