They kindly let us check in early so that we could get changed for the service.
The room was arranged beautifully with lights off, curtains drawn & the glow from the fire.
An additional package provided candles, flowers, chocolates, wine on ice & a balloon.
We had booked dinner and were in the main restaurant, but we found the food choices available on standard menu to be a bit limiting. We eventually chose to eat from the a la carte menu. A word of caution when doing this … ensure that the “dinner allowance” (included as part of the DB&B package) is taken off of the bill on the night, this was not done in our case and we had to argue the point at checkout.
In hindsight, and if we had known it was an option, we would have requested a table in the other smaller, more intimate restaurant that had dim lights & candles on the tables. My wife felt over dressed to be sitting opposite what appeared to be a manager who enjoyed using the F word repeatedly & his subordinate having a business meeting.
We had our breakfast in the room which was excellently presented and very tasty.
The staff were very friendly & helpful.
I would recommend this hotel without any reservations...
The room was good, with a balcony, and the girl who cleaned was extremely friendly, helping me to get Smooth radio changed to the TV as the remote was not at all geared to the TV.
A great experience!
I popped over to the farm shop as I left to pick up some last minute goodies for the family which is also well worth a visit if you find yourself staying at this Hotel.
It has a stunning location on the edge of the historic Gretna Village site, wasted by surface car parks on every accessible side.
We had to wait over 25 minutes for two cocktails in a bar with (as far as we could see) only two other tables occupied.
Our room was immaculately clean, but had no toiletries of any description. When we reported this to reception, someone arrived a few moments later with toilet rolls (which we did have) but no soap/shower gel/shampoo, etc.
There was an electric fire in our room, which generated lots of light and noise but no discernible heat.
The breakfast menu was extensive, but the food was noticeably undercooked, especially the potato scones and hash browns.
The bathroom had clearly been fitted to a high standard, yet the lack of a splashback had resulted in water stains across the plasterboard around the sink.
Room service is always welcome, but a £5 tray charge seems excessive to carry food up one or two flights of stairs.
There's a great deal that's right about this hotel - comfortable beds, a great seating area beside the main bar, high-end TVs and high-speed WiFi. However, management need to tackle a litany of minor issues, from creaking doors to anaemic hot food, to make Smiths the hotel Gretna deserves.
The location of the hotel is great with just a couple of minutes' walk to the famous Blacksmith's Forge, museum and shops. There are plenty of spaces in the hotel car park.
The bar and restaurant areas are very attractive and the food is of excellent quality, both at evening meal and at breakfast. We enjoyed this hotel so much that we re-booked for an overnight stay on our way back from the Scottish Highlands.
Staff at the hotel are amazing giving top class service always with a friendly smile and our special thanks go to Ria and Julie on reception and to Ryan in the bar.
Whenever we next go to the Highlands we will always choose to break our journey with an overnight stay at Smiths of Gretna Green - it makes a wonderful start to a holiday and gives something to look forward to on the journey home!
Paid for wedding package, was given a twin room with beds pushed together, we had 17 guests and was disgusted with the way it was organised, wedding was moved twice.
When wedding went ahead, the location of wedding was wrong, the function room was changed and we was not informed. The hotel is of corporate and may look nice but you are on a conveyor belt to get done as quick as possible, the food was very good and must compliment them on this but how can you have a honeymoon suite with single beds pushed together, mould in bathroom, fire in suite not working, you are given two complimentary biscuits lol. We cancelled our buffer as was disgusted that we had to tell them what we ordered, total mayhem.
We ended up at the gables hotel where all my guests were and loved the personal touch that was given. All my guests were disgusted at the total disorganised chaos at smiths and also wedding planners. Also the reception need to respect customers and not talk down to customers and residents.
This is a corporate wedding function hotel that has no feeling for its patrons. You have been warned.
"Lovely hotel for a Gretna wedding. Excellent location just across from famous Blacksmith's Shop. Easily accessible from M6. "Read full review
"Ask for a quiet room or book across the road where they have small separate chalets/rooms away from the hotel if you can’t sleep with noise"Read full review
