The Smiths at Gretna Green Hotel is often celebrated for its romantic ambiance, making it a favored choice for wedding goers. While the spacious rooms are praised, reviewers frequently point out that they could benefit from updating and improved maintenance, and some guests have encountered noise disturbances. The hotel's proximity to wedding venues is a highlight, yet the comfort provided by the plush beds is overshadowed by inconsistent service and room amenity issues. Despite many finding their accommodations clean, reports of cleanliness lapses contribute to the sentiment that the hotel may not offer value for money, especially given the high costs for extras.

We had booked a Blessing at Gretna Green for our 30th wedding anniversary & took the opportunity of having a package deal which included DB&B at the hotel which is just across the road from the venue.
They kindly let us check in early so that we could get changed for the service.
The room was arranged beautifully with lights off, curtains drawn & the glow from the fire.
An additional package provided candles, flowers, chocolates, wine on ice & a balloon.
We had booked dinner and were in the main restaurant, but we found the food choices available on standard menu to be a bit limiting. We eventually chose to eat from the a la carte menu. A word of caution when doing this … ensure that the “dinner allowance” (included as part of the DB&B package) is taken off of the bill on the night, this was not done in our case and we had to argue the point at checkout.
In hindsight, and if we had known it was an option, we would have requested a table in the other smaller, more intimate restaurant that had dim lights & candles on the tables. My wife felt over dressed to be sitting opposite what appeared to be a manager who enjoyed using the F word repeatedly & his subordinate having a business meeting.
We had our breakfast in the room which was excellently presented and very tasty.
The staff were very friendly & helpful.

We married in the Blacksmiths Shop 10 years ago and stayed at Smiths. This was our anniversary re-visit. We had a balcony room which was spacious and comfortable. A little tlc is needed in the room ie in the bathroom the floor covering strip needs re-attaching to the wall, the fan didn’t work and table tops in the room were worn. We stayed 2 nights and ate in the restaurant both evenings. The meals were delicious and the Carrot Cake was unbelievable such a wonderful twist on a traditional cake. Good breakfasts also. Bar staff very good at making cocktails. Staff were wearing full face masks and sanitiser dispensers were around the hotel.

We stayed here for our wedding on the 24th may. When we arrived check in was very smooth and COVID friendly. Our room was on the 2nd floor it was spacious however the attention to detail was not there. We had a balcony room. the room was very tired looking. Scuffs on the walls, bathroom need grouting as there was black mould on the tiles. there was no hand wash in the bathroom. I did ask the cleaning attendant but she said they only have soap which we found a little strange. Our ironing board and iron was something out of the 60s. When we used it, it just leaked everywhere. I called reception and they brought a replacement very quickly however it didn’t work so we gave up and used our guests one. The flooring in the bathroom had seen better days and had started to come away from the floor. I think this is due to having a very cheap shower curtain which floods the bathroom when you use it. The toilet paper was the cheapest of cheap. These things are not major but took the shine off of our stay. Our guest room had a durex box in their toilet bin which suggests the room was not cleaned properly. When going to the bar the staff need more training. We waited 30mins before anyone came over to us too see if we wanted a drink. We ordered a black coffee, gin and lemonade, vodka cranberry and a pint of beer. It took a further 25mins for this to arrive and when it did we received a pina colada, instead of a coffee. They took it way and brought back a coke! Our wedding day was lovely and I would say the salon lady was brilliant. However the hotel was not great. The reception staff are newly trained as they like to tell you it’s there 2nd shift. I would not say this is a 4* hotel more like a 2/3. The breakfast is standard and our wedding meal was edible but not anything amazing.

The staff, front, back, and all the staff in and out of the kitchen were superb. Great service from the whole team.
I would recommend this hotel without any reservations...
The room was good, with a balcony, and the girl who cleaned was extremely friendly, helping me to get Smooth radio changed to the TV as the remote was not at all geared to the TV.
A great experience!

I stopped here for the night on my way up to Scotland for Christmas and found the Hotel to be very good. There is ample free parking and the receptionist greeted me with a nice smile as I walked in which is not always a given these days. My room was located on the first floor, nearest the double doors to the stairs and lift area which was a mistake as I could hear them bang close every time someone walked though until eventually all went quiet. The room itself was great with a lovely feature fireplace and large bathroom although it was set up for disabled access so may not be the case across the whole Hotel. I ate in the bar area, amongst the wedding parties present, and tucked into a tasty portion of fish and chips along with cheese cake for dessert from the menu all washed down with a couple of pints. Coming down for breakfast in the morning the staff were on hand to show me to a table, bring Coffee and advise on the buffet selection and menu options. The selection and food quality was excellent, as was the service throughout my brief stay, which I thanked the Receptionist for on check out.
I popped over to the farm shop as I left to pick up some last minute goodies for the family which is also well worth a visit if you find yourself staying at this Hotel.

We stayed at Smiths for a night earlier this month, and came away feeling like the hotel is failing to achieve its full potential. It has a great location and friendly staff, yet it consistently missed the mark:

It has a stunning location on the edge of the historic Gretna Village site, wasted by surface car parks on every accessible side.
We had to wait over 25 minutes for two cocktails in a bar with (as far as we could see) only two other tables occupied.
Our room was immaculately clean, but had no toiletries of any description. When we reported this to reception, someone arrived a few moments later with toilet rolls (which we did have) but no soap/shower gel/shampoo, etc.
There was an electric fire in our room, which generated lots of light and noise but no discernible heat.
The breakfast menu was extensive, but the food was noticeably undercooked, especially the potato scones and hash browns.
The bathroom had clearly been fitted to a high standard, yet the lack of a splashback had resulted in water stains across the plasterboard around the sink.
Room service is always welcome, but a £5 tray charge seems excessive to carry food up one or two flights of stairs.

There's a great deal that's right about this hotel - comfortable beds, a great seating area beside the main bar, high-end TVs and high-speed WiFi. However, management need to tackle a litany of minor issues, from creaking doors to anaemic hot food, to make Smiths the hotel Gretna deserves.

We stayed in the penthouse suite for one night the evening before we got married. We travelled 3 & 1/2 hours to be greeted by a receptionist who didn’t offer information about the hotel the food, breakfast - the usual things you expect upon arrival. The suite is very spacious BUT the bed is broken, we found a use mans black sock under the bed & a hairbrush on top of the waterfall shower. There were black hairs on the bathroom floor, the windows had obviously had champagne opened against them as splash marks all over them (the balcony door hardly opens on the bedroom) the wallpaper is tired & the whole suite felt grubby & dirty. We didn’t even bother with a Bath for fear of dirty filters. There was no bottles of water in the room & only one coffee pod!! We reported this to the manager & got some money back but it spoiled our one & only evening there.

We received a warm friendly welcome at Smiths and really enjoyed our overnight stay on our way up to the Scottish Highlands. We booked a balcony room which was spacious, comfortable, clean and warm and we loved the wall-mounted electric fire giving an extra cosy and warm atmosphere.

The location of the hotel is great with just a couple of minutes' walk to the famous Blacksmith's Forge, museum and shops. There are plenty of spaces in the hotel car park.

The bar and restaurant areas are very attractive and the food is of excellent quality, both at evening meal and at breakfast. We enjoyed this hotel so much that we re-booked for an overnight stay on our way back from the Scottish Highlands.

Staff at the hotel are amazing giving top class service always with a friendly smile and our special thanks go to Ria and Julie on reception and to Ryan in the bar.

Whenever we next go to the Highlands we will always choose to break our journey with an overnight stay at Smiths of Gretna Green - it makes a wonderful start to a holiday and gives something to look forward to on the journey home!

Was our first trip away after lockdown so we were understandably concerned about being away, however we neednt have been. Smiths has very clear guidance in place and plenty of cleaning areas throughout hotel, with temperature recording aswell. Felt re-assured they were sticking to gorvernment rules. Hotel was lovely and comfortable, food was absolutely amazing and cocktails were very tasty. All staff we encountered were polite and professional. And the best thing was there are still weddings happening, small weddings but its lovely to see whilst there! Unfortunately was unable to use spoilt at smiths this time due to restrictions however was given a full refund on arrival for teatments I had booked and paid for. Lovely hotel. Fantastic food!!

Wedding on 20th November.
Paid for wedding package, was given a twin room with beds pushed together, we had 17 guests and was disgusted with the way it was organised, wedding was moved twice.
When wedding went ahead, the location of wedding was wrong, the function room was changed and we was not informed. The hotel is of corporate and may look nice but you are on a conveyor belt to get done as quick as possible, the food was very good and must compliment them on this but how can you have a honeymoon suite with single beds pushed together, mould in bathroom, fire in suite not working, you are given two complimentary biscuits lol. We cancelled our buffer as was disgusted that we had to tell them what we ordered, total mayhem.
We ended up at the gables hotel where all my guests were and loved the personal touch that was given. All my guests were disgusted at the total disorganised chaos at smiths and also wedding planners. Also the reception need to respect customers and not talk down to customers and residents.
This is a corporate wedding function hotel that has no feeling for its patrons. You have been warned.
