The hotel is easy to find and in a good location set in grounds off the main Dumfries road.
Our room was large, in very good condition and very clean.
Covid issues were generally dealt with well however the hotel was packed for dinner, both with residents and walk in diners, to the point that the place was just too full and waiting staff were run ragged by the sheer volume of diners.
This was exacerbated by the current offer on dining rebate running through to the end of September.
The bed was really comfortable and the hotel was really quiet for a good nights sleep
Breakfast was much more ordered and was delicious.
Good value hotel all in all
I will start of by commending Natasha who put together a first class Burns Supper. The Speakers, Singer and Musicians were excellent and shows what an array of talent we have in Dumfriesshire. The Function Room was set up really well and we were served a very good 3 course meal. However, I found the drink to be a bit on the expensive side at £10.55 for a pint of lager and a fruit cider. My wife and I were at a wedding not so long ago at the Duck Bay Marina on Loch Lomond and the same two drinks cost just over £9. Hhhmmmm......
Anyway, now on to the Hotel. We were quite surprised with the reception area and entrance hall. It’s still the same as when we were last there. It’s old and tired and we noticed the staircase skirting was marked and a bit tacky looking. Also, the poor receptionist’s are still hidden behind the raised desk and you struggle to actually know wether someone is actually there or not. To be fair I think there are plans in place to modernise this area as it is definitely out of sync from the wonderful refurbishment to the rest of the building and nothing like the reception area at other Hotels in the RAD Group. IMO it’s really important to have this area quite eye catching as it’s the first point of contact for visitors and it’s necessary to create a good impression right away. One of the plus points of the Hotel are the staff. We found everyone we spoke to very friendly and helpful, although it would have been nice to be told there was a lift when we were checking in, instead we were pointed to the stairs.
The room we had was no 136,It was a Classic double. It was well decorated and furnished, typical of the high standard of fittings found in the rooms throughout the Rad Hotels. One thing we did notice was that the bath/shower combo had a very high side panel and it made it very difficult to get in and out of. I’ve had both hips replaced last year and a simple handrail to get hold of would have made things safer and a lot easier! We mentioned this to a few members of staff so hopefully something can get done about it.
What we had to eat during our stay was very good, definitely an improvement from our previous visit. However, I must admit getting charged £2.95 extra each morning for an omelette instead of a full Scottish was a bit of a pain! Most of the Hotels we use don’t have any breakfast supplement.
I would definitely stay at The Hetland Hall again. It’s going to be some Hotel when its fully refurbished. It’s located 10 miles south of Dumfries and maybe just a bit remote. However, there is a nice garden centre and play area for the kids about a miles walk from the Hotel.
Being November in Scotland and having old wooden sash single glazed windows meant the room was quite cold on arrival.
Unfortunately there was a power cut the first night which lasted all night. This meant no power, heating or any water in our room from 10pm until the next day. The hotel still managed a continental breakfast the next morning which was appreciated.
Dinner both nights was excellent and the cooked breakfast on our second morning was fab.
The staff at the hotel were all excellent and despite the stress of the unfortunate event managed to meet all of our needs.
Regardless of everything we enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.
Would suggest to the hotel that if the power cut ever happend again that bottled water be delivered to the rooms to allow for basic washing / brushing of teeth etc. (We were given some but had to go looking for it the next morning).
From the minute we drive up it gives me a sense of my second home, so much so we use any excuse for a few nights away here.
The restaurant and staff can’t ever be faulted from our point of view and the last visit we had was a fortnight after opening back up after lockdown and the efforts from the company to get everything right was 100%.
Our food was delicious, the menu suits us, in fact, we can never decide what to have as everything we’ve tasted over the years here has been perfect.
Looking forward to our next visit already, take care all, Gillian xXx
On arrival we had to wait an hour on our room being ready which was not a good start after driving for a couple of hours. We were told because there was a wedding day on and people had to see the room but that didn't make much sense to me as we had booked well in advance.
None the less we had our afternoon tea which we couldn't fault but again the staff were very slow and lacked any character. And not eager to be attentive.
The room was very nice, more we expected finished very well. It wasnt long before we were hungry again so ended up popping down slightly early for our a couple of drinks and our dinner.
Entering the restaurant we were just pointed to a table and we walked to it ourselves whilst on watching everyone else come in they were walked to their table by the maître ď with menus and offered water straight away. Sounds petty maybe but these are the small things that go a long way. Dinner was very nice although could have been warmer. No one asked us how anything was throughout the full meal, again just a small thing but it all builds up in the experience.
Breakfast the next morning was vast and very nice. I got porridge which was made with water instead of milk, possibly because of some peoples dietary requirements, maybe I should have specified milk. Cooked breakfast and orange juice was lovely.
We got a late check out which was fine. And would return for another overnight stay.
We thought as a whole the hotel looked lovely but just some substance. Mainly from the staff attitude and conduct. They are quite young an inexperienced. Maybe some more training for them would go a long way.
On the day 6.5 on 10.
The room was immaculately clean, it was so comfortable and the views across the Solway were stunning.
There was a TV in the bath which was a lovely treat. The staff on reception were helpful and gave us a late checkout.
The food in the restaurant was delicious and well worth every penny.
What I liked about this hotel is that they didn’t overcharge for anything. Everything was reasonably priced, even the tray charge for breakfast in the room was only £3pp- I have stayed in much lower quality hotels than this that have charged up to £15 so this was definitely a highlight. The breakfast in the room was also brought in and set out on the table. It was fabulous.
The only small grumble I have is that we were supposed to get complimentary fizz with our meal- everyone around us did but we didn’t. We could have said something at the time to be fair but we felt our waitress wasn’t that approachable so we just left it.
All in all we cannot wait to go back!!!
"Plenty of parking. All inclusive option is brilliant. Great selection on the dinner menu with the change to choose from the A La Carte Menu."Read full review
