Was visiting Newcastle for a football match. Hotel is located 5 mins walk from St James Park and 5 mins walk from pubs, clubs and restaurants - so right in the middle of everything. Comfortable bed, friendly staff and place clean

This was my first stay in a Premier Inn and I was impressed by how nice it was, so I will definitely stay here again. The location is very convenient but I did not find it noisy even though it is so near the Gate and other pubs, perhaps because my room was in the middle of the building.
Shower gel/shampoo and face wash are provided from wall dispensers and are perfectly fine to use, although I used my own shampoo and conditioner.
Extra tea, coffee and milk are available at reception which is a nice touch and more than makes up for the lack of biscuits as there are plenty of shops nearby if you want some.
My only problem was finding my room as the place is like a maze, but I only got lost the first 3 times :-)

As with others on here, we are Premier Inn veterans and enjoy their honest and no nonsense approach to hospitality. We stayed 5 nights in a comfortable, warm, and quiet room at the rear during some very cold and stormy weather. The reception team are great and house keeping is of a high standard. Location is great and Chinatown has some good places to eat. Because of the bad weather, we ate in for three nights in the hotel's new restaurant. Service and food are very good at reasonable prices with the bar being a very pleasant refuge.

We didn't take the breakfast as typical fried offerings, especially at buffets, are usually tired and not particularly good for the price. Grainger Market is very nearby and Cafe One2One cafe does a really good cooked breakfast. Also Debenhams store opposite has a nice cafe on the ground level for coffee and buns, etc. The big Eldon Square shopping centre is across the road and very handy as a weather proof access to the two bus stations, Northumberland Street, and centre city. Monument Metro station is a five minute walk away. All in all, a very good stay at another Premier Inn to be added to our list.

Great hotel, lovely building it was well maintained and in a great area. Always clean looking as well. So quick and convenient for everything we needed.
The room was perfect! The bed was amazing and the pillows actually had pillow protectors on them even the extra ones in the bag! Shockingly some Premier inns don’t have them, it’s not something I thought about before but that little extra detail was an amazing touch. Our room was in a quite area hardly heard anyone both outside the hotel or inside during the night.
The housekeeping team were so friendly every time we saw them during our stay they always said hello or opened doors for us when we had our hands full with bags. They are a credit to your team.
We also got checked in early around 3pm rather than 4pm which already started our break away fantastically.

We had a couple of issues. Our shower curtain had mold on the bottom of it nothing terrible just something to be aware of as we didn’t notice until our last day. Also our hairdryer in the room. The fan was covered in dust or hair we couldn’t tell as we could not get the grate off. So we didn’t end up using it as when we tried it was pretty pathetic in terms of power and it has an awful burning smell to it.

Our trip however was wonderful and we couldn’t have asked for a better stay. Thank you! We will be back again soon.

I’ve stayed in Premier Inn hotels before and although they’re all generally a similar standard, there have always been ones that are better than others. Premier Inn at The Gate, Newcastle is one of the better ones for sure! The whole place feels modern and clean and all of the staff members both at reception, and in the restaurant were really friendly and happy to help.

I only stayed for one night but had a really peaceful nights sleep, helped by the blackout curtains (pitch black room still at 9am!). It’s rare to find a budget-priced hotel room with a bath big enough for a human to actually sit and relax in, but I got one with my room and I was chuffed to bits!

My only complaints were that my room was a fair distance from the staircase and the lifts and there was not alternative, closer way to get back down to the lobby, but this wasn’t a huge issue. I would also liked to have seen iron/ironing board in the room (I managed without and I’m not sure if they’re available from reception, but I think it’s a staple must-have for travelling around).

I was unsure whether I wanted breakfast when booking so didn’t pre-book it, but I saw a menu in the room and for £9.50 you get unlimited buffet breakfast, which I thought was a very good price and so I decided to go down in the morning to see what was on offer. I was pleasantly surprised to see cooked options on display that were cooked well. There wasn’t much in the way of a ‘continental’ choice other than croissants and fruit and I’d have liked to see more of this, but certainly overall it’s one of the better hotel breakfasts I’ve had.

Our 1st Hotel experience after Covid. From the moment we dropped our bags off the staff were courteous and friendly. I did not encounter 1 member of staff who wasn't helpful and knowledgeable.

This was supposed to be a 3 night stay for me and my wife in a double room. Our youngest daughter was supposed to stay with her big sister in her 'student' house but this lasted 2 hours.

Thinking I would have to book a separate room, I spoke to staff on the front desk and explained my predicament. They sent up fresh linen to make up the spare bed in the room and didn't charge me anything extra. This was such a refreshing approach and de-stressed me immediately.

We had breakfast each morning which was served fresh. A great selection of continental and cooked was available. Buffet breakfast is a thing of the past. We also dined in the restaurant on the first night and the food was greatcand well priced. They also had CORONA on draught. So refreshing in the heat.

The air conditioning was a God-send.

A very pleasant visit and we will definitely be coming back to THE GATE.

All the staff were very friendly and couldn't have done enough.

We visited Newcastle for a couple of nights away and Premier Inn was our first choice of accommodation. We're seasoned veterans when it comes to using the brand whether it's for airport over night stays before flying out or for short breaks around the country. The cost is very reasonable and you always know what you're going to get.
This particular Inn is located right in the heart of the action with Chinatown and St James' Park just behind and loads of local pubs, restaurants, shops and entertainment right on its doorstep. The building is really big, an old Co-op I think, and the room was faultless. On our last night I lost my key card and despite my Chinese takeaway sitting at the security door on the 3rd floor with my wife, I was able to get down to reception, get a replacement sorted within 2 minutes and get back up without the food losing any temperature. A win-win situation.
We had paid for the buffet breakfast both mornings which included cooked and continental options. I always love the Premier Inn breakfast. One slight criticism I have is that the cooked items could have been a little bit hotter. Even though they had heat lamps above and hot plate underneath sausages etc were just warm rather than hot. I suppose this is par for the course with buffet style as high temperatures would mean things dry out. This minor quibble didn't do anything to diminish the taste and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
One tip if your staying here - the parking that is nearby does not belong to the Premier inn so there is only a discount offered off a hefty charge. I downloaded a parking app and got a space 10 mins walk away for half the price.

Stayed in one of the newer Premier Plus rooms and was not disappointed. Room was spacious and comfortable, and had a large desk to work from. The room had a Nespresso machine and a mini fridge (which was actually cold, a rarity for some hotels) which were both very nice touches. The bathroom was very clean and had a rainfall shower with good water pressure, and the toiletries felt premium. I’d definitely book a Premier Plus room again in future! The only minor issues were at reception and breakfast where there were no staff available for check-in or to seat me, however there was only a short wait, and they were very friendly and helpful.

I've heard very few good things about the franchise, but I wanted to find accommodation that was central and close to the office, and this hotel i.e Premier Inn Newcastle (The Gate) was a 2min walk from my office as well as central to town. I was beyond impressed - the room (standard premium room) was spacious & comfortable and was equipped with a desk, mini-fridge (stocked with complimentary water every day), shower and a bath. The location of my room was quiet and allowed me to get work done without noise.

We stayed at the Premier Inn, Newgate Street, Newcastle on Friday 17 September. We thought the CleanProtect would guarantee a clean room.

We were so wrong! Our first room was evidently dirty; the floor had not been vacuumed, the settee contained hairs and debris on it, the toilet had not been cleaned and there were handmarks everywhere. We didn't unpack and requested another room. Unbelievably the second room was worst than the first and also had debris on the pillows, stained bedding and the switch plates, table tops and door handles were visibly unclean. One switch near the bed contained debris from someone's nose!

We were offered another room and a complimentary free breakfast for our inconvenience. The third room was only marginally better and due to our exhaustion from a five hour journey proceeded to use antibacterial wipes to cleanse all surfaces and handles. I couldn't bring myself to make a hot drink after discovering a plastic bag shoved into one of the cups.

Our stay put a real damper on our first night away after more than 12 months'of lockdown. We have used Premier Inn on many occasions for business and personal reasons but following our recent unsatisfactory stay I would not recommend this hotel chain.

Is this hotel or the premier inn at quayside better for the great north run?
Answer from Natalie O
Northamptonshire, United Kingdom1 contribution
I've not stayed at the Quayside Premier, unfortunately. However, in terms of being central and avoiding the crowds and parking issues around the quayside, I would say that Premier, at The Gate is more central in terms of being able to access stores, restaurants, take aways etc. and the hotel itself and the rooms are very spacious and more importantly, very very clean. The staff are also helpful and attentive. I hope this helps your choice.
