Please for the love of God AVOID this hovel at all costs. If it is because of the ease of access to the train station or road network then just take a sleeping bag and sleep at the side of the road or in the station platform trust me they would be cleaner that the excuse of a room. This place was booked in my behalf on arrival I had to call to get the owner to let me in as the place was locked up . I was shown to a room that was well below all normal standards. No light switch instead a piece of string ! A tiny walk mounted TV from 1995 sound not working. Bed was disgusting sink had last occupants beard trimmings in it, no cleaner visit for the 4 day stay. Did not use the restaurant as room was bad enough.only up side is it wasn't my money. Please do not book
Booked last minute, three nights - to be honest i got my locations mixed up, thought i was booking elsewhere. My room was tiny, at the back over looked part of the roof - clearly a lash up - stolen from the back of an adjacent large bedroom. Bed was a home made affair to fit the odd shape of the room. I reported a problem with shower pull, the first morning. Too idle to replace the item, so the Proprietor allowed access to another room to take a shower - wouldn't suit everyone but i made do. The first morning the room was made up and after that they must have forgotten i was staying there. Verdict - there's far better out there.
Called for drinks only and really enjoyed the railway-themed interior. The real ale was o.k. and on our second visit we were very comfy on the leather Chesterfields. Some of the lagers were sold out but I guess that reflects how busy they must have been the previous night.
What great value for money this hotel is. Room was clean, tidy and very comfortable. We also ate in the restaurant. The choice of food and quality of the food was very good indeed and the staff were very friendly. A swim and sauna followed by a full English breakfast finished off the visit in style. Will definitely be visiting this hotel again.
Having stayed in many budget hotels the difference will often be the staff and owners, both were very friendly and helpful making food off the menu as I arrived late to the hotels. Within the price range the hotel is at a decent standard, rooms and clean and functional. The bar is clean with a very good pint of lawless available when I have stayed, food was well prepared and service was quick but not so quick it feels like you are being hurried out. At the price point I would certainly not complain and would be happy to recommend the hotel.
Our double room was well laid out with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, there was still plenty of room to walk round. The tea & coffee making facilities were well used by us. The bed was extremely comfy and although we only ate breakfast on Sunday morning, it was delicious. Next time we visit we will both take slippers as the floor in the ensuite was very cold and a shock to the system in the middle of the night. The room was warm enough even though it was freezing outside. Overall, I would thoroughly recommend the Sportsman.
At the price I paid I wasn't expecting the Ritz. Basic single room with toilet and shower. Food in hotel was good. Just a pity that there was still a used cup and empty milk containers still in the room from previous occupant.
Nearly at the end of a 2 week business trip to yarm. The Sportsman has provided an excellent base with high quality accommodation, food and bar. The service from staff and owner Jim cannot be faulted. Tied with corner shop 30 seconds away and bus stop to Yarm and Stockton 2 min away I am impressed. JF from France
We had an informal evening do here, with buffet, for our wedding. Brilliant. Jim and his staff were excellent. A very good, freshly made buffet with hot coffee and tea on hand and excellent ales. Very accommodating.
My daughter held her 18th birthday party at The Sportsman a couple of weeks ago and it was a huge success. The landlord and staff were extremely helpful and very friendly. Nothing was too much bother for them. The venue was excellent and easily accommodated 80 plus people. I would recommend The Sportsman without hesitation.
