A landmark itself, Charing Cross opened in 1865 and remains one of London's most well-placed hotels. A few steps to Trafalgar Square. A minute's stroll to London's West End, A stone's throw away from The National Gallery and so much more. And when exploring more of the city, Charing Cross station is right next door.

Detailed Reviews
My wife and I just spent a glorious week at the Amba Hotel Charing Cross. We make a habit of finding very nice, less than huge hotels in major cities, and this is one of the very best we've ever found. We are fairly tough graders, but our experience was Five Star all the way.
First of all, we love to walk, generally putting in at least four or five miles per day, and I don't think you could possible find a hotel in a better location in London for seeing the major sights. We had planned to use the Underground or taxis for out of the way places, and yet we never had to given the hotels excellent location. Pleasant walks to the British Museum, Trafalgar Square, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, on and on....and the area is simply crawling with great restaurants and theaters.
The staff was extremely cordial and helpful in every respect. When I asked where the closest cash machine was located, one of the staff actually walked me to it.
Our room was very bright and modern, the bathroom highly functional (major requirement of my wife) with a great shower and a separate tub area. And the mini bar was restocked every day at no charge.
A strong recommendation: we got a fairly deluxe room and the rate included access to the Amba Lounge, which we endorse in the strongest terms. They serve a FULL breakfast each morning, with a very nice spread of hot items (scrambled eggs, sausages, ham, the usual British beans and tomatoes) as well as a great assortment of fruit, breads and pastries. Also your choice of whatever type of coffee drink you like, as well as abundant juices. An equivalent breakfast for the two of us in a local restaurant would have cost at least $50-60. An absolutely terrific amenity.
Despite the central location, the room was VERY quiet. We strongly expect to return again.
We only had one very minor glitch, and that was resolved before we got there.
Upon receiving our reservation, we got a very nice automatic note offering to help us with any special request we had. Since we hoped they could possibly accommodate our early arrival (which they absolutely did) I responded to their note with this request. I immediately received an automated response, saying we'd get a personal response shortly. But a day went by and we heard nothing. So I sent a second note....then a third, then a fourth (are they still in business?)...at which time I bit the bullet and actually mailed them a transatlantic letter, which finally elicited a very pleasant response. So perhaps they need to monitor their email a bit more. But this is a most minor quibble.
Great hotel, great staff, great location, we couldn't have asked for anything more.

Booked an afternoon tea for four through Groupon. Thought it was good value for money, the inside of the hotel felt a million miles away from Charing cross and the busy strand, instantly feeling very relaxed upon arrival. Had a good selection of tea and cakes and enjoyed our prosecco too. Would return.

This is our second stay at The Clermont Charing Cross and had been postponed since New Year.
We arrived at just after 12 and were delighted that the room was ready and we could check in straight away . Our room was a king suite on the 4th floor with views out onto the Strand
The lighting in the room was perfect nice bright and airy with lots of mirrors and sockets to do your hair and make up . What I loved was on an evening it was silent and nice and dark as the curtains fit perfectly and blocked out all light .
The location next to Charing Cross was perfect and a short stroll to Covent Garden and bus stops outside .
Breakfast was well organised and surprisingly quick service and we were served each day from Sunday to Wednesday by the same friendly lady who we didn’t get her name but she said she was there until Friday . It was no trouble to her to find me black currant jam. There was more choice for breakfast mid week but I am sure we could have asked for different things on the Sunday and it would not have been a problem . All the staff we met were friendly and helpful and seemed so pleased to be back open . We will be back

Waited a while to write this review as I wanted to reconsider our thoughts.
The positives are: location which can't be beat (multiple buses stop at The Strand within one block plus Underground is next door), walking distance to theaters, Trafalgar, multiple attractions. Food was terrific in the hotel from the lounge to the restaurant to the bar. Very pleasant staff in the bar and lounge.
However the negatives for us were hard to overcome by the above. The stand alone shower drain was completely clogged which was rectified the second day. The lounge at breakfast was super crowded, tiny cocktail tables for two pushed up against each other. The carpet in our junior suite had an enormous red stain outside the bathroom. But the overwhelming problem was getting our room serviced each day. Out of 12 nights only two days did we have a housekeeping visit before noon. We had to contact Housekeeping when we returned to the hotel at 3:30 or later and only then was the room serviced. We did activate the Service Request light before leaving each morning. We received multiple reasons from 3-4 housekeeping supervisors. A real shortage of staff. We also had someone come in to the room and take our tip for the maid without cleaning it.
Doubtful we would stay here next visit.
Sorry to have these experiences as the reviews are so positive.

While I am very pleased to know that you particularly appreciated our fantastic location, as well as the food and the staff, I am incredibly disappointed to see that you have experienced so many issues and let downs during your stay. My girlfriend and I stayed here for a weekend in August for an anniversary, so I booked this hotel because it looked upper-class and perfect for a couples break. The hotel exceeded all of our expectations. The location couldn’t have been better; Charing Cross tube station right underneath the hotel (not that you’d know, we heard no noise at all whilst in the room) and many attractions within walking distance.
The room itself was a Deluxe King room. Deluxe turned out to be the correct word. It was immaculately clean and so luxurious, could hardly believe we didn’t pay hundreds for it. The bed was one of the best I’ve ever slept in anywhere in the world, and the shower in the bathroom was very powerful and spacious. The free minibar was a bonus as were the free drinks tokens.
Above all else, the staff were amazing and their customer service unrivalled. We arrived at about 11:30am (check in isn’t until 3pm so I just wanted somewhere to keep the cases), however the lady on reception, whose name I sadly can’t remember, found us a room that was already prepared meaning we could unpack and head out without worrying about anything. I believe the same lady sourced us some umbrellas on the Sunday as there were no more in the lobby (the weather was typically British for the whole weekend) which, in my opinion, was an example of going above and beyond.
We would not hesitate to stay again, hopefully sooner rather than later.

This was my first visit to this restaurant, the tables are well spaced and the staff extremely helpful, and went out of their way to make us welcome without being intrusive. The menu is some what limited; it does have a selection of hot and cold food and is very reasonably priced for a central London location. We both had the posh prawn cocktail to start which was good. I had the cod and chips for a main course sadly the oil used for frying was getting towards the end of its life so whilst it was o.k. it was very average. The atmosphere is very pleasant and location perfect. for the theatres in the strand.

We booked and executive twin room which includes access to the Amba Lounge.
On arrival at the hotel, we were early so our room wasn’t ready. Not a problem, we dropped off our bags and had a few hours look round London etc.
Came back to the hotel and everything seemed ok, bags had been taken to our room, the room was nice and comfortable - I would say it’s more a large twin than an executive twin (nothing really made it stand out). Now part of the ‘executive’ upgrade was the use of the Amba Lounge from midday to 7pm where they served complimentary tea, coffee, snacks and small selection of wines and beers and we were told this was for over 16s only, so we thought this would be a nice place on an afternoon for a coffee and to chill out. Think again, there was kids which were not kept under control in the lounge and this meant ‘executive’ guests having to sit in the communal hallways to have a quiet drink.
Now the main issue was the billing fiasco. On arrival the hotel ‘earmark’ your credit card the cost of your stay and an extra £50 in case you charge anything to the room, but what we noticed is that they had done this 3 times. When we tried to confront them about this they did not seem concerned that an extra £1000+ had been requested. They kept making excuse after excuse but we ending up having to personally ring the credit card company ourselves to try and sort this out.
Another issue was the breakfast options - as executive guests you get to have breakfast in the Amba Lounge. Only problem with this is that the tables are small and not capable of supporting cups, glasses and your breakfast dishes. Also, as it is a very small ‘room’ they do not have the same selection and a very slimmed down selection as they do in the main Terrace restaurant, and because of this we did not end up using the Amba lounge for breakfast as we like a wide selection of fresh fruits and this was not the case in the lounge.
The concierge staff are very polite and always address you as you pass through reception, other staff are pleasant too.
The hotel is ideally situation right next to Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery and other attractions.

An exceptionally clean, well maintained, friendly staffed hotel in a great location to view the best of London.
Well appointed, quite rooms, with comfortable beds, and thermostat controlled central A/C in each room. Even though our room on the 4th floor faced the busy Strand area, you could not hear the noise from the street as they have double glass to windows. We stayed in a studio suite which was perfect for a family of four (our kids are 12/13).
The location was within walking distance of most major attractions. Once you figure out the public transit (which is pretty easy once you do) there is a bus stop right in front of the hotel, and you are literally on top of a train and tube station.
We did get a chance to try the restaurant out out last night and the food was great. The restaurant had a nice ambiance to it, wish we had discovered it earlier.
This was one of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed at at this price point and we have travelled through a lot of US, Canada, and Europe.
Highly recommended!

We booked for a 2 night stay and the hotel was fantastic, nothing was too much trouble to any of the staff, in particular the breakfast and bar staff were very helpful and friendly. The rooms were quiet and at a perfect temperature, which is sometimes rare in London and the location was perfect for our needs with lots of locations within walking distance and multiple underground stations within easy walking distance. Breakfast was an excellent buffet, the first we had enjoyed as a buffet since early 2020 and a terrace table is highly recommended for the views.

What a wonderful hotel and a fantastic stay. This was a delayed birthday treat for my mum with my 10 y/o in tow. We had a studio room which was spacious, very well furnished and spotlessly clean for 2 nights on 1st-3rd June. The bed was divinely comfortable. I didn’t want to leave!
The staff were wonderful and very, very welcoming each and every time we entered the hotel. This was one of the most personable experiences I have had in a London hotel. They even came and knocked on our door mid stay, to check everything was to our satisfaction. The complementary mini fridge of goodies was also well appreciated.
I chose the hotel because of its easy access to most of the major attractions and transport links and we weren’t disappointed. There are 2 Tube stations within a few steps of the hotels front door, as well as Charing Cross station. The location it’s self meant it was very easy to walk any direction and be within minutes of most major tourist attractions, the Thames embankment or Covent Garden.
Thank you for a genuinely lovely stay and we will most definitely come back to this hotel on our next visit to the capital.

The location it’s self meant it was very easy to walk any direction and be within minutes of most major tourist attractions, the Thames embankment or Covent Garden.
Thank you for a genuinely lovely stay and we will most definitely come back to this hotel on our next visit to the capital.
