Inspired by old world design and the glory of British craftsmanship, The Pilgrm brings a sense of provenance to today's modern traveller. We believe in bringing people together and that genuine hospitality is seamless, generous and graceful. At our core, we’re individuals simply driven by making something that was once beautiful, beautiful again. The Pilgrm offers a refreshing break from the ordinary. Each room has been sensitively designed to reflect the building’s original time and place. We aim to deliver the warmest guest experience of today, with the finest British craftsmanship of yesterday. Sensitively pared back, one of the most striking design features of our bedrooms is the 200-year-old parquet flooring that beautifully frames the bed and bedsides. With a nod to yesterday’s craftsmanship, it creates a modern, yet vintage charm. Our first-floor lounge and terrace are open daily from 7am - 10:30 pm to both guests and visitors.

This is a very unique property. There is no traditional check-in desk and, arriving later in the evening, we needed to be let in the door but were promptly checked in by an employee on a laptop in the lounge area. Finding your room, and then finding your way back to the lobby via stairs, can be a comical challenge (it wasn't until our third day we figured out how to use the stairs correctly). The lift barely fits two with any luggage. I booked the largest room available which specified a king bed but unless a European king is the same as a North American double, we did not receive a king. We knew the rooms would be small, and that they are. The "large" room was smaller than any New York City hotel room I'd been in. One very small shelf in the bathroom to keep toiletries (not enough for 2 people), though the shower was nice with great pressure and bathroom itself was functional. The location was extremely convenient to Paddington, staff we interacted with were friendly, and the complimentary still/sparkling water was a great touch. For approximately $260 USD/night, I don't think I would stay again due to the size and lack of air conditioning though leaving the window cracked at night (we were not there on a weekend) left the room bearable but always damp. If a 3.5 was possible, I would rate it there. In winter as a solo traveler, I would likely revisit.

Hi there shafeman556, Thanks for leaving your thoughts with us - I'm pleased to know that you felt well looked after by our team and of course made use of our convenient location during your time here! While our check-in desk is not akin to that which many are used to, we are always on the lookout for new arrivals to ensure that they are guided promptly to where they need to be. I'm pleased to read that our night manager was able to check you into your rooms swiftly. We are fortunate enough to be home to our beautifully traditional Victorian-era staircases and long winding corridors, although I appreciate that this may sometimes cause some confusion when navigating to our guests' rooms. Our team are always more than happy to assist with directions where required. We do make the sizes of our rooms as clear as possible on our website but I appreciate that this may not be clear enough in some instances. With regards to the beds in our large rooms, a number have king beds inside them. Some have doubles, however, so it may be the case that you were assigned one of these at random. I understand that this may not be suited to everyone's personal tastes. Where our building is a listed property, we are unfortunately unable to install air conditioning units in the rooms. I appreciate that during the hotter months of the year, this would certainly help to combat the elevated temperatures. All the best.

I took time choosing a hotel in London and the Pilgrm was just what I hoped it would be - lovely decor, relaxed feel, simple bedrooms with good quality bedding, towels, toiletries. The room was small (medium size room) but in London you expect this. The bed was very comfy. The pillows too, two each! Breakfast was excellent, great menu, lovely service. The lounge area is a really nice environment to hang out, have a coffee etc. The pantry on our floor is a really nice idea; well stocked aside from milk which was provided when we asked. The area immediately around the hotel is vibrant and busy and I could hear noise through the night but the bedroom window was open and London is a busy city! A bigger room would have been nice, a bigger bathroom too and perhaps the sink in the bathroom but overall these things didn’t really affect my stay. I would definitely book again and well done in creating a great hotel in central London that has character, coolness and a little different to the big chain experience.

I always wish TA had a "good" rating in between "average" and "very good" because this hotel fits into the "good" category. As I booked the hotel the same day we were to stay we were well aware of the very small room with bunk beds but everything was spotlessly clean with very comfortable beds although we were surprised to hear vacuuming outside the room at night! However, the heating didn't work so we had to ask for extra blankets as the duvets were very much summer weight. The location is perfect for Paddington station and surrounded by restaurants. We did not use any of the food or drink facilities in the hotel but, when I went to the shop in the morning, the place was buzzing with people enjoying coffee and breakfasts and the bar area was rather good with free still and sparkling water which I have never seen in any other hotel.

Hi there Val, Thanks for leaving your thoughts with us - I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed our convenient location and that the standard of cleanliness which we aim to maintain was also appreciated. It is always a bonus to know that our guests are making use of our complimentary filtered water machines too! We do have a porter on hand during the night to ensure that the hotel is looking spotless for the following day, although I do apologise that you happened to hear him at work. I will be sure to pass your feedback on to the relevant parties so that we can arrange a different cleaning schedule in the future. With regards to your mention of the lack of heating in your room, as we draw closer to the summer months we have made the decision to turn the central heating off throughout the building and alternate our duvets to the lighter kind. This is because we find that during period of hotter weather, our rooms can become increasingly warm, and so to have the central heating on would not only be a waste of energy, but could also prove to be quite uncomfortable in addition to the climate. Of course, our team will always be more than happy to provide extra duvets or space heaters should our guests feel this to be necessary. It is a shame that you did not get a chance to enjoy our delicious food and beverage offering - I do hope that you are able to indulge should you decide to visit us again! Please do feel free to get in touch at hello@thepilgrm.com should you have any requests/preferences, in the event that you do wish to join us at a later date. All the best.

Stayed there in December 2019. Had booked a large room with super king size bed (be aware that british king size is only 1.60m and british super king 1.80m). Had requested a quiet room facing the back of the hotel, which we got. However, even being December and having the radiator turned off, the room was HOT. So we opened the window. Next problem: From outside it smelled so bad from a kitchen (think fat from deep frying stuff), it was impossible to keep the window open. So we asked if they had another room maybe facing one of the other back wings. Staff was absolutely unwillig to help, they told us housekeeping was busy and any other room wouldn‘t be any different anyway. Oh, and of course they came and test smelled the room and of course to them it didn‘t smell. Have never experienced such rude staff with such an unwillingness to provide any kind of customer service!
The room itself was small, which we had expected but contrary to the pictures on the homepage didn‘t have a chair in it, only an uncomfortable stool, so if one person was in the bathroom to get ready the other one had to wait on the bed. The mattress itself was very comfortable! However, the bed frame looked like it came from the thrift store. I wouldn‘t mind that per se, but the frame was screeching whenever one turned in bed.
The bathroom of course is tiny and the shower only has a rain shower head, no hand shower, so hardly impossible to shower without getting your hair wet.
I really love great design but great design doesn‘t only look good but is also functional and functionality is completely lacking in this hotel. For the second night we had booked we left and stayed elsewhere, at a nice hotel in Kensington with a nice big room that comfortably fit two chairs and a small table and a big bathroom. At an even lower price

Hi there Alarya, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us for regarding your stay in December, I’m sorry to read that it did not met your expectations. A good number of our beds are bespoke but the majority of them are handmade here in the UK meaning that they will of course confirm to UK standard sizing, we also try to make it as clear as we can for our guests that air conditioning is not part of our offer but do offer fans in every room and extras upon request. I can only apologise for the smells you experienced in your room during your stay, we are unfortunately unable to control what is expelled by our neighbouring businesses exhausts and/or kitchens. I wholeheartedly apologise that the team came off as unhelpful or unfriendly as this is certainly not our standard nor how we train our team to assist guests, please rest assured that your feedback has been brought up with the team and addressed. We also do our best to make our room size averages as clear as we can for guests looking to book and do feel it a little unfeasible to show photos of every single one of our 73 non-identical rooms. This is admittedly the first time we have had negative feedback in regards to our bed frames, all materials present in The Pilgrm (woods, metals etc) were reclaimed and re-purposed into the furniture and fixtures that populate the building and were made for us especially; the sustainable nature of this deliberate design is a huge part of an ethos that we are very proud of and maintenance issues are always dealt with the highest priority as soon as we are made aware of them. The design of our hotel and its rooms is purposefully minimal and utilitarian, I’m sorry that you don’t seem to feel the same way but I fully appreciate that this style will not be to everyone’s liking. We take our reviews extremely seriously as they are a fantastic way for us to know exactly how our guests felt about their stay and where we can make improvements. In order for us to do this, however, we would ideally have feedback like this much closer to a guest’s date of departure and not 8 months later when the opportunity to rectify or address most feedback is long gone. In any case, we are truly sorry to have lost you as a returning guest wish you all the best, especially in these very uncertain and difficult times. Kind regards, Alessandro

The last night of our first family vacation with our 7 month old daughter ended in disaster thanks in large part to the Pilgrm’s false advertising and blatant disregard for the basic tenets of hospitality expected at any hotel stay.

My wife discovered the Pilgrm online and was immediately drawn to its sense of style and proximity to Paddington station. The large rooms, one of which we booked, looked stylish and, boasting a king size bed, enough comfort and luxury for the whole family to sleep in the same bed when our baby woke from her crib in the middle of the night.

What we found upon arrival was quite less than advertised. An elevator that was so small it would only fit one of us at a time, and a series of serpentine marrow hallways and turns that led us to our room. Small stairs along the way made it very difficult to lug heavy bags. There was no one offering to help with bags or offer direction to the room, which required a map to reach. There was no front desk, or hotel staff other than the nice lady with the laptop at a modern high counter desk who gave us a key (the first of which did not work).

When we got the second key and opened the door to our “large” room, we found that it was a double bed stuffed in between two walls, not enough room for bedside tables (just 6 inch counters) and a window with a broken blind opening out to a view of the wall of another hotel.

We thought for sure this was a mistake. So I went back downstairs and spoke with the only other hotel employee that was working that night, the de facto “manager”. She came to the room with us and acknowledged that this was not a king size bed, but stated that it must be a large room since they do not put cribs in any other rooms other than a large room. She didn’t seem to know whether it was actually a large room other than that stated fact. There was indeed a crib in our room, crammed between the foot of the bed and the wall.

She said that there were no other rooms available. We said we were leaving and expected a refund. She said she would have to speak with the manager. We asked if there were any senior level staff members on site, or anyone else who knew whether this was a large room or not. She said no, it was just them until Monday. This was Friday night.

So, we left. A week later, we received an email from the manager (or whoever had the authority to make a decision) stating that we would not be receiving a refund, and that we should have known that a “UK king” was in fact not a proper king size bed.

Which led us to dispute the charge with our credit card company and write this review.

Here are some pictures of the room.

The Pilgrm pretends to be something it is not, and when confronted with its own reality, stands in the corner, folds its arms and holds its breath.

Stay away.

Hi there jbr0mley, As mentioned in my most recent email to you I can only apologise that your experience with us didn't meet your expectations; we understand that we are a somewhat non-traditional & do our best to convey this online for our potential guests. Our building is a 200 year old Victorian refurbishment and as such winding corridors and an admittedly tight lift-shaft are indeed part of the buildings heritage. The average square meterage of our rooms is displayed via their descriptions and our large rooms are clearly labelled as having at minimum a king-sized bed within them, something that we would not be permitted to advertise were it not the case; I do however apologise that there seems to have been some confusion with the team on that note. Being a Victorian era building also means that none of our rooms are identical and they are spread across 5 wings, all of which face a different part of our surrounding area. We are quite fortunate in that we are able to allocate our guests in rooms that suit their preferences when we can and encourage our guests to leave us notes to outline these preferences. Our reception area was designed to be minimal and provide fewer obstacles between our guests and the team, something that a large traditional reception desk certainly would have offered, I understand that this won't be to everyones liking however. In our email conversation I simply outlined that the bed sizes between the UK and US are drastically different in size with US beds being much larger and that it is for this reason that I feel there seems to have been some confusion. Furthermore your room was occupied for over three hours before it was decided that lodging would be found elsewhere and at this time our housekeeping had already departed for the day, this meant that we were unable to turn the room for sale after your departure. I hope I have offered some clarity to this situation. Kind regards, Alessandro

Booked for a two night stay in London. Between us we had a small, medium and large room. Very welcoming when we arrived at lunchtime, we were going to just drop off luggage as was not expecting rooms to be ready but they were which was a bonus. Loved the fact that the rooms were all over the place, up stairs, down stairs, across the roof (on a walkway), really added to the whole feel of the place, but could be a problem to anyone with mobility problems although there were some lifts. Rooms were all perfect for what we needed, cleam, comfortable and great bathrooms. No air conditioning, but all had a fan and you could open the window a small amount. Small room probably better for one person only as quite tight. Tea making facilities on each floor and water available on ground floor to fill the recyclable bottles you are given on arrival (still and sparkling). Small lounge, bar and terrace where we had a drink one evening and breakfast one morning - all very good.
The area itself is busy and noisy with a lot of building work going on around Paddington Station. Two of our rooms were at the side of hotel overlooking some mews. First night was fine noise wise, slept with window open (and we are used to no noise at night except owls and foxes), however second night a lot of noise from the mews - but no fault of hotel.
All in all, we loved the hotel, will definitely return and daughter has said she would feel confident and safe staying there on her own.

I booked the hotel since a read a review on the website of Le Monde.
The rooms are nice, they put some artwork in the rooms, which is rare , but in fact you are staying in a pub annex rooms. The rooms are really small , booked a big room , but still very small. They money the spent on their pub and lunch room, they saved on comfort. The windows do not keep out the noice, the hotel is in a busy street with many pubs and restaurants , so forget about having a good rest. They put a lot of money in their website , and the lounge is now, but crowded with non residents, so sometimes you cannot even sit in the lounge, people sit there with their laptop and a coffee for hours. But for 220 euro per night, I can recommend many other places.

Hello Dries, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us regarding your stay at The Pilgrm, I'm sorry to see that it does not seem to have met your expectations though. Paddington can sometimes be a noisy part of central London & I can only apologise that you suffered from noise pollution while with us; we are also a listed building meaning that any major modification to window fixtures would require permission from the council, something we are trying to attain at the moment. We do try to make our room sizes and inventory as clear as we can for guests looking to book with us online but are sorry to hear that this was not clear enough. While we do share an address with two other businesses we have no actual affiliation with the pub next door to us, only the Lounge is ours. I apologise that you weren't able to find somewhere to sit in the Lounge, it does get very busy at times but we do try to make sure that our in-house guests are able to join us for breakfast which is very often included; I'll certainly be discussing your feedback with the team. We do hope to have you back in the near future to have the type of experience that we wish for all of our guests. Kind regards, Alessandro

The hotel lobby is charming, BUT lacking attention to detail in every aspect possible, and…

1. As others have already mentioned, the hotel is very hot. Even in late October it is almost impossible to get a good nights sleep on the top floor. Not anything anyone can do anything about, but be aware of this fact as you make reservations.

2. No cleaning/change of towels during the stay unless you specifically request it. And maybe there is extra charge for cleaning, difficultly to understand information regarding this on the website? Can the hotel staff maybe clarify this? This information is not presented on booking sites, yet another example of lacking attention to detail that makes you as a guest feel let down and overcharged.
3. Breakfast comes at 14 GBP/person. We are a family with teenagers eating at different times in the morning, and for practical reasons we ordered breakfast upon arrival. We were not presented with any information on the price of breakfast or on how the “breakfast system” works. There is no buffe, instead you order breakfast from a sparse menu where you can order toast with jam but without butter? At check-out we learned that one dish and one drink is included in the breakfast price (often at a lower total sum than 14 GBP). Anything extra, like a glass of juice in addition to a cup of coffee is charged extra!!!! A scam!!!!! Regular coffe is topped up once, but no refill of other types of coffee.

Information on breakfast (apart from the menu) is not present on the hotel website, which makes it extremely difficult to understand since there is no information in the breakfast room/lobby either.

In addition we waited 30 min to get a coffee and a bowl of yoghurt with granola one morning, albeit the breakfast area was not crowded.

Hi there Road586513 Thanks for leaving your thoughts with us - I am sorry to read that your time here didn't quite live up to your expectations this time around. The temperatures in our hotel can at times become somewhat elevated. Due to our hotels status as a listed property we are unfortunately unable to install air conditioning units for our rooms, and so we have a number of fans available for those who require them and during the hotter months of the year these are placed in all of our rooms as a standard. As per our website we do not offer daily housekeeping services in keeping with our focus on the avoidance of unnecessary waste. We do have a housekeeping package which is purchasable at the point of booking or alternatively at any stage of our guests stay with us, and for those stays which are longer in nature we will typically offer a complimentary service. Our team will also gladly provide fresh towels and toiletries upon request. Our breakfast included package which is priced at £14.50 consists of a glass of 100% pure cold pressed apple or orange juice, a choice of tea or one of our specialty coffees and one of our substantial freshly prepared sweet or savoury breakfast options from our breakfast/brunch offering. Any additions will be charged as extras. While we have not included butter on our menu, this does not mean that it is not available - we simply do not charge for this. Although there is a description of what is included in our breakfast package on our website which can be read at the point of adding this package to the booking, we will always be more than happy to explain further should our guests need this clarified again. I do apologise that you experienced a slightly longer waiting time for your breakfast one morning, this is certainly not a standard we aim to set. All the best.

4th time I've stayed at The Pilgrm, but 1st time during covid.
I've always loved the location, the rooms, the coffee, and the exceptionally high-quality breakfast, taken on the balcony when the weather permits.

During covid, the team was extra thoughtful and really went out of their way to make my stay super comfortable during what continues to be a nightmare time for anyone in hospitality.

Can't recommend The Pilgrm more highly and I'll be back soon in 2021.

The Pilgrim is quirky, stylish and has an amazing smell of coffee in the reception area that doubles as a coffee shop. If you book a standard room be prepared that it is very small and the my bed was recessed into a gap with no space either side so the bed had to be "mounted" from the end! The rooms are scattered over a maze of corridors and it's easy to get lost. Having said all that i really like the character, style and quality. Very good shower and comfy bed but if you want to spend time in a hotel room before sleeping might need to upgrade to a bigger one.

Hi Jim, Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us; it is very much appreciated. We designed our rooms with the thought of maximizing floor space and comfort for our guests in mind but it is great to hear your stay was overall very comfortable. We do have a bit of a maze corridors due to the historic layout of the building . In our renovation we chose to keep the historic layout rather than lose some of the buildings character. We do hope we can welcome you at The Pilgrm in the future and we will be sure to take an extra care of you! Best regards, Katarzyna

Hi, As per other responses which are accurate, the "pantry" is a small communal area on each floor for making tea and coffee but the range when we visited was poor and we didn't use this facility. There are other coffee shops in the area and local cafes that provide a range of breakfast choices ( - the Pilgrm facilities for breakfast pastries etc are significantly over priced even for London). You can purchase hot drinks from the main lounge area. Hope that helps. Tim

Hotel says there is coffee/tea at the pantry. What do they mean? Is this the breakfast lounge?

On each floor there is a kitchenette that has a kettle / coffee & tea . You make your own coffee etc . The fridge was broken but is meant to hold fresh milk. There is a served breakfast in the lounge area but this costs extra.

"The hotel is noisy so if you are sensitive to noise bring ear plugs or just don’t stay there. Also the rooms are tiny. Even the large."
