The Premier Inn Southampton City Centre hotel garners praise for its central location and overall cleanliness, with guests frequently commending the helpful staff. However, some travelers report the atmosphere feels outdated, noting the need for refurbishment and expressing mixed feelings on the noise levels from nearby trains and traffic. Room comfort is a concern due to malfunctioning heating/AC and cleanliness issues. While the value is appreciated by some for its affordability, others point out hidden costs and service discrepancies.

Great location sitting halfway between Central Station and St. Mary's Football Ground, 10 minute walk from each.
Despite paying for an early check-in I arrived to find a sign at the check-in desk saying it was closed until 3PM. The automated check in machines gave the same advice. I had to ring the buzzer a number of times before a team member eventually arrived to check me in. She offered no apology fir my wait and appeared to be somewhat disgruntled at having been disturbed by the buzzer.
There was also another customer who had already checked in but had a problem with her key who had been waiting even longer than me, again no apology was offered to her. I would suggest the check in desk should be manned at all times between 0700 - 2300 hrs..
The area around the hotel was disgusting, piled high with litter making it very unattractive and unwelcoming, I would suggest someone from the hotel needs to speak to the city council about this issue.
No restaurant was available during my stay so I had breakfast at Brunch and Barista on the High Street, a 5 minute walk away and very good.
Despite the lack of air con the room was warm and a fan was also provided in the room by default.
I'd happily stay here again if I was going to Dt. Mary's despite the slightly surly staff and unpleasant surroundings.
Parking is available on site but chargeable at roughly £10 per 24 hours.

Have stayed at this Premier Inn a number of times prior to going on a cruise from Southampton. Value for money, clean comfortable beds and great customer service.

We arrived today (29th February 2024) and were greeted by the lovely Sara who checked us in. We witnessed Sara providing everyone arriving, with the same warm, friendly, courteous, welcoming manner… readily answering numerous questions and queries. Also ensuring restaurant reservations were booked, and everyone knew the procedure for paying car park fees etc etc etc. This warm welcome gave us a positive start to our hotel stay.

Sara is a true asset to this hotel and a fantastic ambassador for Premier Inn UK.

This hotel is great value for money and it’s meal deal offer of 2 course dinner and breakfast is great value for money. Rooms are not luxurious but they are clean and contain the usual Premier Inn hotel facilities and amenities

We had pre-paid our neal deal at time of booking. Welcomed to the restaurant on 4th floor by waitress Shirley (another great ambassador for Premier Inn UK) Shirley was our waitress on previous visits here. She quickly took us to our table and explained our options for the meal deal dinner. Throughout our meal Shirley was continually ensuring dinner guests food orders were taken, drinks ordered, food served and everything was ok. We ordered tomato soup and chicken coujons for starters and fish (haddock) with fries and garden peas for mains. All were delicious 👍 We were too full for any desserts. Tea is served in a cup, or teapot if you request a pot of tea.

There is a bar area alongside the restaurant but we didn’t use it this visit.

This hotel is an excellent hotel in the (budget hotel category) but from our experience today… has a 5* customer service from its staff, especially from receptionist Sara and waitress Shirley.

We have booked another stay at this hotel for 20th June 2024 and are hoping we are fortunate that Sara and Shirley are working at the hotel that day 🤞🤞🤞🤞

Excellent booking facility where you give a choice of paying when booking or on arrival.

Clean and nice bathrooms.

But...

The hotel could give a choice of 3 people staying in a twin room without increasing room tariff like Travelodge does.

A bath mat is required besides the 2 bath towels and 2 hand towels.

Some plug points on either side of the bed should be given to charge mobiles/laptop etc.

One lift was broken and other too small and slow so getting to room too ages. Key wouldn't issue on check-in, room cold or hot but never ok due to window not properly closing. Not enough and poorly located power points. Basic wifi was abysmal, despite the city centre location and so it is obviously controlled to try to force you into buying the premium one. Just very disappointed.

I've already raised my formal complaint with Premier Inn directly after my experience, however they take over 30+ days to respond. Avoid this hotel at all costs, the staff are beyond rude, the rooms are filthy, the stench of mould and damp is completely overpowering. I have been to countless Premier Inn's throughout my time and I have never experienced one to this level. I was spoken to appallingly by 'senior' staff and humiliated in front of customers simply by outlining these rooms do not even reach basic hygiene standards. Save you money and spend the extra £10 to say in the new premier inn located by the shopping mall.

Absolute shambles from start to finish. They have a new checking in service, which appears to have fried their system. I prepaid 2 lots of group bookings, went to reception to make sure all was in place and then when my delegates arrived, they charged them again and have argued with me about me owing them money. Their card systems crashed 3 times over 2 days, leaving people locked out of their rooms, the receptionist had to let everyone in and then of course you are stuck there. One person on the bar of a fully booked hotel, people waiting over half an hour to get a drink. A very unclear breakfast booking system, they wanted people to pick a time for breakfast (normal), but didn't tell anyone, because that isn't an option on the digital check ins, you don't see a person.

Instructions for parking & how to get to the hotel were wrong. There is some parking onsite if you can find it past next doors bins
When we came to leave there was no way to pay so expecting a fine, we have left our car reg with reception
Auto Check-in broken
One lift broken
Room very tired & felt dirty (I do have photos of marks & damage) There was an old chair, an extra heater & a non-matching desk light, none of those extra looking bits that are usual eg the purple throw etc
Bathroom extractor fan made such a noise that we couldn't use it except when in the shower; washed, washed teeth & used the toilet in the dark, the bedroom window opened slightly & we were on floor 4 so could open it to cool the room down from the steam. We would not have on the ground floor due to the number of rats in the car park
Only 1 coffee & tea, no phone so had to go downstairs to get more, was given plenty, this was the first time I reported issues
The bed was old & meant that we ended up rolling into the middle, 2 uncomfortable night’s sleep
When staying more than one night we would expect that the room was automatically cleaned, the next day & if towels requested, they are changed. We were told we had to request this, after using my mobile for over an hour, I went downstairs on our way to breakfast (restaurant is upstairs) at the same time I requested we had a towel each, guests should not be expected to share bath or hand towels. I also again reported issues. Room tided, still only 1 hand towel, noone in reception so collected our own clean towels
You get away with this very low standard due to most guests being 1 night football fans, it is not cheap & is well below Premier standard
We book at Premier regularly, for football & other, we know what to expect, this was NOT IT

I have now spent over an hour trying to put this together both getting it down to 2000 characters and only to find the form doesn’t work because of the date part and there is no email address

We stayed at this hotel as it was my sons 18th birthday and had booked an experience close by.
The location was perfect and if you’re lucky enough to park at the hotel car park, then most things are walking distance which provides a relief.
The hotel itself was well maintained, looked smart and everywhere was spotlessly clean.
The common areas were always clean and fresh smelling, and all staff I interacted with were friendly and happy to help.
The room was a nice size and spotlessly clean. A large tv on the wall and the beds were super comfortable. I have to say the shower was perfect too.
We stayed on a warm day with outside temperatures getting to 28 degrees. I don’t mind the heat but the room was sweltering. The windows only open a little due to regulations and there is no air conditioning. I showered and within 20 mins was hot and sweaty again. Consequently, didn’t sleep well. There was a desk top fan in the room but this provides little relief and could barely be felt. It also just blew around hot air as you’d expect. This wasn’t the staff members fault and if it wasn’t for this I would have felt my stay was perfect.
In the car park, I did see a fair few rats running around after dark but this is a problem in Southampton rather than the hotel itself, so don’t be alarmed.
The breakfast was OK. We had the full breakfast and there was choice but not as much as other places we’ve stayed. There was plenty and we didn’t go hungry. Staff were again, amazing.
Great location, clean, friendly and rooms a great size it was just the hot temperature at night that caused us problems.

The Premier Inn in Southampton is our go to place when we are in the city. It is conveniently located to the High Steet and a good walk to the ferry terminal and National Express bus stop. It is a short taxi ride to the cruise terminals.
The hotel is comfortable, but like most budget hotelsthese days, the room conveniences are limited. The bed is great.
The bar and restaurant are convenient, open for extensive hours and the staff are welcoming ,eager and accommodating. The food is plain but value for money. I must mention James in the bar for his happy and cheerful service.
I do agree with other reviewers that the building does need an upgrade. In dome places you can smell the mustiness.
We will be back in two weeks.

I booked for 5 nights in October but left after 4 nights.

The good points first:
1. 10 minute walk to west quay shopping.
2. Hotel is clean.
3. Staff are helpful.
4. Beds are comfy.

Bad points
1. The area is very run down and has beggars / rough looking people hanging around hotel (someone said there was a halfway house next door).
2. There is lots of rubbish on streets around hotel.
3. I was warned not to use the underpass outside the hotel (at night).
4. There is a railway line right next to hotel - after one night of no sleep I had to move to other side of hotel (where you get dual carriageway noise ).
5. The broken air conditioning has not been fixed and now they do not advertise air conditioning. You have to have the windows open to reduce the heat - but then get plagued by traffic noise and drunk students. There are portable fans and radiators in rooms.
6. You have to request room cleaning at reception and then remember to place cleaning sign on door 🤯
7. On the sixth floor I didn’t get much water pressure - shower was poor.
8. The lifts are very very slow.
9. You have to use your room card to open all doors - even when you have passed beyond reception.
10. No iron or ironing board in room.
11. There seemed to be loads of smokers outside the front door every time I walked through it - not great for a non smoker.
12. TVs are not smart so you can’t access Netflix’s etc.
13. There is only a power socket on one side of the bed. The first room I had had usb charger and a three pin but the second room only had a three pin.
14. There is tea and coffee in the room but no decaf 🤯

I won’t be staying here again.
