There were 2 things that need improvement, the shower needs bleach or mould remover used, for obvious reasons.
We were disturbed by workman leaving, at 7, on a Saturday, because the hotel allows some of the work vans to be parked in a lay-by/drop off zone, outside the windows of rooms in the front, to the right of entrance. They were talking and opening and shutting van doors, 8 foot from the room window. We were in room 10, directly outside, we had a high roofed multi seater minibus with blacked out windows. The equivalent of a black wall! There is ample space in the car park, with one area, where other vans were parked, able to back up to a hedge. Even disabled parking was further away from the building than vans outside our windows.
Please sort this out Holiday inn?
On a plus side the room was clean, large but could have done with a comfortable chair, the breakfast excellent and the staff friendly.
I guess we were just unlucky with staying at a time some of the other residents were not considerate of others.
It started off well with an excellent welcome and check in; we arrived late due to a late ferry arrival from Guernsey into Portsmouth which prompted a last minute booking rather than a very late drive back to Devon. Both my wife and I could quite happily of stayed downstairs for a drink but the atmosphere was so lacking and bleak we headed up to the room. It was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the shower was hot. The room was bleak, just like reception, not a place you'd want to sit in for any length of time.
The hotel seemed to overdo the whole COVID thing. Horrible tape all over the floors indicating where you can and can't walk (why is this never the case in a better quality place?) And yet they still have the old press button weak coffee machine that all and sundry have pressed before you. The hot food was behind what looked like a rather greasy Perspex screen, and all the hot food (including the cold croissants) were handed to you through a small gap at the bottom. Felt like being served in a prison, although I can't say that from any experience. Couldn't face anything else hot.
All the tables are starting to look worn; in fact the whole experience I found depressing and for a little extra I'd rather stay in a better city centre place. We booked it late for the convenience without very much research - even the nightmare roadworks on the M27 (not blaming the hotel for that!) made it a total chore to find when travelling west.
Maybe I'm just not a Holiday Inn Express kind of person. The place was packed, so I'm clearly in the minority.
When we arrived all seemed ok, hotel lobby is clean and staff were very nice.
I had forgotten toothbrush’s and toothpaste and was kindly given some from the front desk.
We went to the room and I was surprised at how small the room was, we had two adults and a teenager in this room so once the sofa bed was pulled out there was no room, just a tiny area around the double bed/bathroom door. And three people with luggage made it feel very tiny.
We also noticed there was one pillow per person and they were very uncomfortable, flat and bumpy. No idea if we could of asked for more pillows as we had actually bought our own luckily. The duvet was also thin and does not keep you warm. I woke up several times in the night cold and uncomfortable.
We were also two family’s and were told at the desk we were close to each other, we weren’t at all. But after a long day we did not have the energy to ask to move.
We went to dinner and there was 8 of us in total. There was no Prosecco they had run out. We were also told there was no coleslaw to go with our burgers which comes as the side, we wasn’t offered an alternative side I had to ask. The waitress then came to our table to tell us there was now coleslaw. We got our mains, I ordered the beef burger and it was the driest burger I have ever had, I didn’t eat it and at a price of roughly £14 to eat a portion of chips it was not good enough. The coleslaw was clearly shop bought but the cheapest one you could buy.
My sister and Mum ordered the chicken burgers these were better than the beef burger but still for the price of this it wasn’t great. The kids meals were ok but again their meals were £5.50 then an ice cream was £3. Which for what they got is over priced.
Breakfast the following morning was a buffet, with covid I didn’t think it would be a buffet but there we are. There was sausage, bacon, beans and scrambled egg. Muffins & croissants. Cereals, toast and fruit. The breakfast was ok and hit the spot. You can make tea and coffee in the room but not enough milk to go round.
I wouldn’t stay here again, and if we went back to peppa pig I would find an alternative hotel. This wasn’t a cheap deal either it cost over £600, I think the hotel is about £125 a night. For that price I would expect two pillows and a comfy bed.
On the room there was a broke bedside lamp, you only get a pillow per person, and we were short a towel. The sleeper couch for the family room was a bit flimsy for kids, I am glad we brought the bed rail for our little one. The shower leaks massively and messed all over the floor (no baths in the whole hotel not sure what moms with babies do?).
I think they put all families in the far wing which then had the blessings of other kids screaming and yelling down the corridor at 9pm 🤯
That being said the staff were amazing! Friendly and so helpful! The breakfast was great! Way better than anticipated and that is always a blessing not to have to cook or sort out a meal in a day.
Also great that targeted is free parking and there are take away mugs so a cappuccino for the road is a treat.
On my first night in the hotel I checked in and put bags in the room, room is as always a good standard as is the hotel itself. I went down to the bar for dinner and awaited getting seated by a staff member. I got seated and looked through the menu when I went to the bar to order I turned around to see my table being given to someone else. I was being served by the manager at the time who insinuated its my fault for not leaving something at the table, only having my phone and wallet on me i thought it was disgraceful that this was the reaction and not an apology. The menu was basic with most items sold out at the time.
Like my title suggests it seems that COVID-19 is an excuse to charge full price for sub standard service. I understand all sectors have been struggling and are still struggling but to get that kind of response from someone who should have some kind of level of intelligence completely baffled me. When I asked if food could be sent to my room I was told this was not a problem and it turned up missing my drink and the bread that was supposed to come with it. I went back down to the Bar and asked for my drink not realising I was missing the bread until i got back to the room.
On checking out I went for breakfast that morning to go back up to my room to retrieve my bag and the key card failed. Back to reception to get key card programmed... at the front desk I told the gentleman I had left my bag in the room and needed the key reprogrammed as I could not get back in room and he took the card and handed me the bill for the week...
When I asked what it was he stated it was the bill...
As a hotel it's okay, during Term time I imagine it wouldn't be so bad, the hotel room was nice, although after 3 nights still nothing got replenished (i.e. towels on floor as requested, loo rolls, teas. etc). But the car park was full in the holidays and just not worth bothering with again unfortunately.
