Detailed Reviews
A great new find, a hotel of great quality in Southampton set on a beautiful terrace and a nice change for those who visit frequently and are a discerning traveller expecting quality and luxury. I stayed for two nights last month on business.
A warm welcome from the manager who actually showed me to my room and explained details, ironing board for my shirts, tea and coffee, drinks in the mini fridge, kettle and even real milk. Complimentary Pringles was a nice touch whilst watching a film in the evening!
There has been quite an investment in this building. The lounge and entrance hall being that of a distinguished town house, lots of interior design touches. My room was much larger than expected with a beautiful marble bathroom, again bigger than any other hotel bathroom that I have stayed at in Southampton, and with a forceful power shower.
Most importantly, the quality of the towels, sheets, pillows, bathrobe, mattress and duvets etc. felt luxurious and aided a great night’s sleep.
Breakfast was continental delivered to my door in a cute box, warm croissants, butter, preserves and I made a cup of Nespresso, perfect as my first meeting was 9.00 am.
The hotel is 10 minute’s walk from the high street, however London road and Bedford place, just minutes away is full of cafes and shop and bars. The manager was an encyclopaedia of local information of where to eat for dinner and I ended up eating at a restaurant creating Mauritian street food 5 minute’s walk away. There was plenty to choose from on the street, Sushi, Chinese, a bistro, Indian, Italian and a fine dining restaurant on London road, which I am saving for when I bring my other half. The second morning I had a lie in and the ventured out onto Bedford place for a late cooked breakfast before setting off home.
The staff are charming and nothing is too much trouble. It really felt like staying in a private grand house with all mod cons available. I will definitely be back within the month for a weekend shopping and theatre stay and recommend to my business partners and friends. If you are looking for a quality hotel with a more personalised and engaging experience, then this is it.

Didn’t know that this gem of a boutique hotel was in Southampton and since moving away from Southampton this is my new go to. I couldn’t fault this hotel every detail had been catered for right down to black face clothes to remove your makeup. A complimentary mini bar and beautiful decor throughout. The continental breakfast is delivered to your room and is substantial with good quality ingredients
This is a truly well thought out gem that has been beautifully and tastefully decorated. The only very small touch to make it even more perfect would be a small beer and IPA for those who don’t drink wine.
This place is worth a visit 🤍

The whole experience was excellent.
I was very pleased about the concept and the mix of styles of the hotel: Old House (remodelled) + Minimalist Elegant Rooms (with names) + Wonderful Bed and Bedding + Art + very well conceived modern indirect designed lighting.
Bathroom was specially comfortable and well equipped. Shower and Bath are just perfect.
The mix of products in the minibar is very good and enough for having breakfast and/or snack&drink.
The location is very good with lots of restaurants, bars, convenience stores,- close to parks, museums, ecc.
The service at the reception was impeccable in terms of etiquette&protocol, cordiality and personal approach.
I recommend 5* the hotel for travellers coming from cruise ships, tourists interested in getting to know the city, guests on business, or a weekend getaway for a couple.
I hope to go back soon.

I stayed at the hotel for one night and that one night was not long enough. The hotel was beautifully decorated and care had clearly been taken to update and modernise the listed building. The room facilities were absolutely spot on and the attentiveness of the concierge staff was a real treat. I felt valued and welcomed and I would not hesitate to return again. Whilst there is no restaurant on site (I understand this is coming at a later date) I had a fabulous recommendation for dinner from the team which was really helpful. Just a note if you are travelling and sharing a room, the bathroom has a glass door which is gorgeous but not perhaps as private with more than one person in the room.

The experience at this hotel was outstanding. It provided comprehensive amenities and exceeded our expectations. The breakfast was delicious, the beds extremely comfortable, and the bathroom elegantly designed, making our stay highly satisfying. We wholeheartedly recommend this hotel as it offers a central location and parking directly outside. The staff were exceptionally accommodating, and we lacked nothing during our stay.

We had a booking at The Pig in Brokenhurst and decided to stay here the night as a date night treat, being that it’s just a 15 min walk to the train station.
This hotel really was a delight - the outside is beautiful and really sets the theme of elegance. Check in and check out was seamless. The room was drop dead gorgeous! From the website I saw each room was unique, we were in room 8 and all of the finishes to the room were to such a high standard. It had all the amenities you could want; fantastic waterfall shower, Nespresso machine, free mini bar and best of all, you melt into the bed like butter.
The location was a real plus for us, a short walk away is a number of quirky bars and eateries. We were able to walk to the train station to get to our dinner reservation and on returning stopped into a cocktail bar for a nightcap. In the morning we left our bags with reception and walked into West Quay for a little shopping spree, again only a 15 minute walk.
All in all a really faultless stay, we can’t wait to return to try out another room and soak in some more gorgeous interiors!

From the minute you walk through the door of No.4 you experience a wow factor. A beautiful listed town house in a perfect crescent in Southampton. Decorated in a most tasteful way. We stayed on a Saturday night and were able to park right outside the hotel. We stayed in Dahlia room. An absolute bonus in this room is a gas jet fire which actually gives out heat or cool air. There is air con which is so quiet. The room is tastefully furnished. There is a complimentary mini bar with wine, chocolate, water and soft drinks. Tea and Nespresso coffee are provided with fresh milk. Now to the important part of any stay - the bed. This was so comfortable. A selection of pillows and beautiful white Egyptian cotton bed linen. I slept a full uninterrupted 7 hours. The bathroom in Dahlia is white marble with a large walk in shower. Lovely huge soft towels. Nothing is too much trouble at No. 4.

I have had the extreme pleasure of staying in No 4. Carlton Hotel on a few occasions over last 2 months. Each stay has been an absolute delight. From the most warm welcome at reception to the individually designed rooms, you do feel more than a hotel guest. Each room I have had pleasure of staying in was individually designed to the highest standard and quality. The beds are fantastic and as an insomniac I can say best sleep I have had in years. Each bathroom in the different rooms was stunning and finished to highest quality.
All in all the best hotel I have stayed in many a year. A real gem.

Absolutely gem of a find, beautiful Boutique hotel in a fabulous location, a perfect stay from start to finish.
The hotel is located just on the edge of the town centre so perfect for a night out or weekend of shopping and sight seeing.
The decor is stunning and our room was absolutely beautiful. Lots of awesome extra special touches such as a wealth of complimentary goodies including wine, crisps and chocolates. There was a turndown service for that extra luxury experience and although breakfast is continental, it is delivered to your room and was delicious.
If you like to feel like you have truly been spoilt and love being surrounded by the feeling of luxury , this hotel is for you.
It was excellent value for money , on the night we stayed there was literally only £60 difference with the Premier Inn and the experience was a whole world apart, literally no comparison, I would pay the extra everytime.

+1
The newly opened No4Carlton hotel is one of the most beautifully restored and refurnished hotels in Southern England. Connaisseurs of outstanding hotellerie will agree, that interior designer team "Alexander James Interieurs" put together a little gem amongst boutique hotels, in particular, in rather rough and not-so-spoiled Southampton, where really sophisticated and good hotels are rare. Now, the charming 19th Century building with its period design with a contempoary touch, as well as a lovely service will spoil you, and will make you want to stay forever. Note the extremely delicate and expensive fabrics, tapestries and details everywhere. No money was spared to leave a lasting impression of taste and style.
Only two disadvantages: one may ask, are those extreme investments in fine fabrics, light carpets, Farrow&Ball-painted boards, niches, closets equipped to stand the test of time, and (often careless) guests?
Second, no breakfast room yet, just a tray with a continental breakfast will be put in your room. I recommend to the hotel management to get a breakfast room no matter what, it will be worthwhile.
Overall, we were impressed by the efforts made. Well done!
