The Premier Inn Southampton (Cumberland Place) Hotel offers a stay with variable service quality; guests have encountered both friendly staff and slow service. While some guests commend the hotel for its cleanliness and comfort, others have pointed out shortcomings in maintenance and housekeeping. The hotel's location earns high marks for convenience, situated near attractions and the city center, though roadworks can complicate access. Opinions on amenities and decor are mixed, with some guests finding the atmosphere lacking. Despite these issues, many regard the hotel as a good value, particularly for its affordable parking and breakfast.

My 2nd stay at Premier Inn Cumberland Place and it was as faultless as the last time.

Booked a 3-night stay with my best friend as a birthday treat and the absolute pluses were:
+ Welcoming and friendly staff
+ Lovely welcome treats (wine, soft drinks, chocs, balloons & handwritten card), in my room to celebrate my big birthday
+ Spotlessly clean room with bathtub and comfortable bed (most important features for me!)
+ Delicious dinner on the 1st evening (the steaks are cooked to perfection!) and good cooked breakfasts
+ Excellent value
+ Great location for Mayflower theatre and for driving into the New Forest
+ Handy & secure parking

Little things to improve:
- The friendly bar staff struggled to make the cocktails on their menu due to a lack of key ingredients on all 3 nights
- Breakfast buffet was missing plain yoghurt (another “supply problem”) , muesli (and fruit salad on first morning) and fresh fruit was a bit limited in choice (no bananas, just apples and oranges) so I’d have been a bit disappointed if we hadn’t opted for the cooked breakfast.

But overall this is an EXCELLENT Premier Inn and we’re already planning a return trip! Just stock that bar up, please!! 🙏

I travel a lot for my work and have used many different brands of hotels and B & B's . I arrived in Southampton on Sunday 23rd and was booked to stay at the Holiday Inn , but upon arrival was told that although I booked a double bed room there were none available and I also had to pay £15 per day for parking which I wasn't aware of. reception staff were unhelpful and I called Booking.com team who assisted me in cancelling my booking, although I stayed one night.

Thank god I got booked into Premier Inn in Cumberland Place. Now Ive stayed in many Premier Inn's up and down the UK but this one was not only up to their usual decent standard of accommodation , beds ect.. but what stood out for me , was the staff. Everyone of them genuinely happy and welcoming and that includes Kirpal reception desk, Raj the bar and restaurant manage, Mutto and Melinda bar staff, Joanna on restaurant service, Harvey and Joel the chef's . They have made my lonely work stay a pleasure. Ive enjoyed coming back to the hotel after a long day on the road and being greeted by this team . The location is perfect, there is a cheap multi story car park next to the hotel and its near all the bars, restaurants and attractions.

The breakfast is always fresh and not left out to dry .

I would highly recommend this hotel .

We stayed in a family room which was not overly spacious but very clean and comfortable. We had pre booked our breakfast time which we paid on the day. The breakfast worked very well and we placed our order and the food arrived quickly and was very nice. Whilst a few items are missing from the pre covid range, its still delicious and excellent value, especially as kids eat free.

The bar and restaurant area are shut outside of breakfast time so we could not sit down yo have a drink and gamemof uno, but the staff explained this was due to keeping the area safe and clean which is fully understandable.

All of the staff were very helpful throughout our staff.

We parked in the long staff car park behind the hotel which was very convenient and reasonably priced.

The shopping area and waterfront are easily walkable from the hotel.

I would highly recommend the hotel.

Stayed here when we went to Peppa Pig World so we are a young family. Would I return? No. When we checked in, all we were told relating to coronavirus was that the normal buffet was now table service and we had to book a time slot, fair enough. We booked for 8am and as we were staying for 2 nights, which the staff should have seen, we automatically assumed, it had been booked for 8am both mornings. Wrong! It was by pure luck my husband double checked the following day the booking and was told he definitely hadn’t been booked in. Where is the sense in that? Breakfast soooo slow!!!
As instructed in the bathroom, we left our used towels in the bath and we went out for the day. Completely and utterly oblivious to the fact that no maid service was going to be undertaken during our two night stay. When we walked in tired and hungry after being at peppa pig all day, we realised nothing had been done to our room. I went downstairs and spoke with the receptionist, I was told if I wanted maid service then I had to ask for it. I wasn’t informed of this at any point and I said I wasn’t happy about it. He then ran off straight away to get the manager (I didn’t ask for them). If I was him, I wouldn’t have wasted my time. Whoever employed the manager, also needs sacking. I would call him a school boy at best with the customer service skills of a flea. The manager reiterated that I had to ask for it and I would’ve been told this at check in. He checked me in and he said nothing!! Couldn’t even book me two mornings worth of breakfasts. Totally incompetent.
During the exchange, some other man in a polo shirt came over who apparently had some connection to the hotel said premier inn had failed me if I didn’t get a phone call prior to check in telling me all of this. I hadn’t but he did tell me I could feed it back when they sent me a survey at the end of my stay. Wow, great thanks.
I had to ask for new towels with no answer to who was going to collect my dirty ones. I was also told that my room has to be quarantined for 6 days after I vacate? Yeah right! Terrible liars. They’d make no business if that was the case. I see no difference in them doing a turn down service during my stay to them remaking beds, changing linen, refreshing the towels, refreshing tea and coffee and emptying bins once I’ve left.
This hotel has signs up everywhere telling their guests they’ve enhanced their cleaning but I didn’t see one cleaner my whole stay and my room was allowed to remain dirty. For the price I paid, I’m not happy at all and will not recommend to anyone.
If you want to change your cleaning regime within the rooms for guests, my advice for the future would be to put literature in the room for them to read and remove the ‘please clean’ door hangers. Seems odd to have them if you can’t have your room cleaned.

I visited the Cumberland Place Premier Inn recently with my young family prior to going to Paultons Park. I requested on booking for a cot and a bath for my children and was advised this was no issue. A day before I was due to travel I recontacted them to double check the cot and bath were still in order. I was advised by a confused member of staff that that request hadn’t gone through but was told not to worry as they would sort it out.

I travelled to the hotel and arrived at around 2130 and was greeted by a friendly member of staff and a rather disinterested and rude night turn manager. I asked him only 1/2 questions and he basically couldn’t be bothered to answer me and everything was a massive chore for him. I only asked about breakfast times and even this was too much for him.

I was given the keys to my room and on entering low and behold...it didn’t have a cot or a bath!

I returned to reception and again encountered the night turn manager. I told him it wasn’t acceptable and his initial response was ‘I can give you a cot and you can put it together yourself?’ I told him this wasn’t satisfactory and I needed a room with a bath for my children. After some deliberation I was given another room.

The room itself was great and the beds were comfortable.

The came breakfast the following morning. On booking there was no option on the site to take off the ‘Eat out scheme’ discount and I was advised to do this whilst at the hotel.

I booked in for breakfast at 8.30 and didn’t end up being serviced breakfast until 9.30. They were also unable to give me a high chair for my 1 year old as there was ‘too many kids’.

The breakfast itself was lovely it just took ages and a lot longer than what I would deem acceptable.

I have asked them about the Eat out discount scheme and was basically told they couldn’t offer me a refund as their computers didn’t give them an option to do this.

I have since emailed the hotel explaining and was given the following response:

We stayed in this hotel for 5 nights and booked breakfast each morning ahead of our stay. The hotel was great value for money, well located for our family day trips, the room was quite comfy and breakfast was good value for money. Up until the 4th morning we couldn’t have been happier. Unfortunately our stay was ruined by 1 individual who showed no customer service, empathy or understanding. We arrived for breakfast 15 minutes later than we had booked for (having a 3 year old and 6 year old not an excuse but it happens). When we arrived the manager Si, said you are late and cannot be seated, I asked him how long were the slots for to which he replied 1 hour, I asked could we have the table for 45 minutes to ensure the planning wasn’t impacted, he said no the only thing he could do was refund my money. He would rather refund my money than try to accommodate a family with young children. I understand COVID is making things more challenging for everyone and when we had to ask for clean towels on three different occasions and a second room key 3 times, I made no fuss because things are difficult for everyone, this is what made are breakfast refusal even more painful. We cancelled our next days breakfast and ate elsewhere for the last 2 days. Such a shame that one person on a power trip can ruin what would have been a 4/5 review. A detriment to the business in challenging times!!

Stayed at this Premier Inn for work for 3 nights. Pleasant stay until needing to deal with some of the front of house staff. The one manager is so unbelievably rude.

On the 2nd night, I asked if I could get extra coffee and sugar as well as some salt sachets, was told that they couldn't give me salt, which was odd because I'm asking for a sachet like I am a sachet of coffee. In end, I got a sigh and eventually got the salt.

Tried getting some work done but the free WiFi is shocking, so on the 3rd decided to pay £5 for the Ultimate WiFi for 24 hours. Honestly, waste of money. I even contacted Virgin about it. Can't believe they have the audacity to make you pay for something that is just as rubbish as the free version

The following morning I was 20 min late for the my scheduled breakfast slot, due to trying to get work done before breakfast but having the utmost struggle with the wifi. When I got down the manager of the morning (morning of 25th October 2020), wasn't bothered with the fact that I was having WiFi issues. He literally turned around to me and said "the WiFi issue you're having doesn't warrant why you're late for your breakfast slot and I have the right to turn you away." I was shocked that this was his response. Not "sorry to hear about the WiFi, I'll look into this, but also please know that we do these slots because we are busy etc." I still managed to sit for my breakfast but the rudeness really bothered me - which seemed to be the norm here, as one of my colleagues also dealt with a rude staff member at reception.

I know it's a Premier Inn and not some five star hotel, but I've stayed at many Premier Inns around the country for work and I've never dealt with such horrid service from anyone at reception or better yet, any manager on duty. I wish I got his name!

Pity about this chap, because everyone else was great.

Side note: due to Covid 19 your room doesn't get serviced, so if you're on a long stay, keep your towel after your shower in the room to dry throughout the day because if left in the bathroom it just remains damp. Unless you're eating out every night, also bring basic cutlery with you, most take out places don't give you any. Also get Dettol wipes and wipe down all the surfaces. My room wasn't the cleanest when I arrived.

Terrible experience. The rooms are not cleaned and when we asked for it we were told this has to be requested. When we asked where does it say so on the booking confirmation or anywhere in the hotel there was no explanation. We wanted towels to be replaced so we left them in bath tub as per instructions but no fresh towels were provided. Staff kept on giving lame excuses for not cleaning the room. The guy at the reception, Kirpan, was not very helpful. We requested a dinner table around 6 pm and he told there was none available till 8:30. Probably he was annoyed that we requested room cleaning. We got food from outside and opted to dine in their restaurant. We requested some plates which we only received after asking 4-5 times. We also ordered a pasta for the kids from bar and paid at the till. The same guy Kirpan served the pasta ar the table and asked if I had paid. I confirmed it was paid at the time of ordering. He just turned back and asked the girl at the reception “Has he paid” which was extremely rude, like saying “I don’t trust you, you are lying. This is nothing but racial abuse, which we experience at times being Asian. The hotel itself is very crammed and feels claustrophobic. 2 additional single beds were jammed into a room making it a 4 bed family room.

We are regular customers of Premier Inn and were fully expecting the excellent service we have always recieved at numerous locations throughout the UK.
Having been advised that check in times had been put back to 4pm we duly arrived at 4.15pm to find the self service check-in facility out of order and a very long queue at the desk being handled by only one member of staff. Eventually another team member assisted with the check in and we were given keys to our room on the third floor.

On inspection of the shower cubicle in our room we were horrified to find large areas of black slimey mould on several of the surfaces. We took photographs of the problem areas and went back to the reception desk and reported the problem to a member of staff who assured us that the matter would be reported to housekeeping and rectified as soon as possible.

We now felt that if this was the standard of heigene in areas that customers could experience , what were things like in other areas only accessable to the staff .... such as the kitchens !! Because of our concerns we asked to cancel our meal deal package which we had previously booked and paid for. Our request was confirmed as acceptable by one of the members of staff and we were informed that we would recieve a full refund for the ammount paid for the meal deal.

On checking our credit card statement a few days later we found that we had only recieved a partial repayment of the expected refund and subsequently tried on numerous occassions to telephone the hotel directly to try to rectify the issue.
Their telephone system is obviously set up to fend off direct contact with customers and cancels the calls with 'lame' apologies of being too busy attending to other customers. After many more attempts to get to speak with someone we did eventually manage to get through to the Duty Manager who assured us that the refund would be processed by him personally . To date, we have not recieved any further refund.

Until this matter is satisfactorily resolved we will not be using Premier Inn for our future hotel requirements, and would especially advise other travellers to beware of Cumberland Place.
( P.S. - the shower cubicle problem was not rectified during our stay )

Hello, Thank you for your reviewing your recent stay with us. We’re very sorry that you were left disappointed by the cleanliness standards in your room on arrival. This certainly isn't the experience we would expect for our guests. The safety and wellbeing of our guests and teams has always been incredibly important to us and everyone in our hotels should rightly expect a safe, clean and protected environment. The Coronavirus crisis has brought this into sharp focus, which is why we have launched a new rigorous, daily cleaning regime across all our hotels. We apologise you found your room to not be up to the high standard we would expect. We have ensured this feedback has been logged to the Hotel Management team so that they can look into these issues with our Housekeeping teams to prevent this experience from being repeated again in the future. Again, our sincere apologies and thank you for taking the time to share your review. We hope that we can look forward to welcoming you back to one of our hotels again soon for a more enjoyable stay. Kind regards, Lauren

Excellent location within easy walking distance of central train station about 5-10 walk. Also easy walking distance of high street shopping just walk through the park and you are in the main high street. Must mention a great vintage shop called Beatnik Eporium at the top of the high street opposite the park, my children found some great clothes in there! Good breakfast as always at hotel, was surprised they were still doing buffet style. Room was not cleaned during stay reception advise you of this at check in so had to ask for clean towels, ran out of coffee and tea supply, toilet roll, bin overflowing. Beds comfortable as always with premier inn, very quiet we were based on ground floor no issues with any noise. Cannot check in now until 4pm as policy changed but there is a luggage area you can leave you suitcases which we did when we arrived and checked in later. Overall a good stay you know what to expect with a premier inn the only change being room not serviced in the usual way because of current situation.

There is some parking nearby but I'm not sure whether it is permit holders only. If you were to contact the Premier Inn um sure they would advise you. I did notice a couple of municipal parking lots that do offer all day/overnight parking but not sure at price as we travelled by train.
