This hotel is 30+ years due a refurbishment and it shows in all aspects. Myself and my partner were staying here for a wedding and were very dissapointed in our stay. The first problem was being on the 4th floor with a broken lift which according to previous reviews has been broken for some time. The hotel itself, lobby, corridors, dining room is very dated and numerous places marks on the walls and wallpaper coming off. Our room itself was abit of a joke considering the price. Tiny hot stuffy room facing the busy main road with one of the smallest double beds I've come across. With a cracked and damp ceiling and heavily marked and peeling walls. The bathroom looked 20-30 years old with a tiny locker of a shower with the most feeble water pressure I've ever experienced. The breakfast was cheap greasy and tasteless. The parking situation was abit stupid as they had 4 parking spots for the hotel so £10/night for street parking instead. There's not alot the staff can do when the infrastructure they are given is so poor and they tried their best. This hotel shouldve been refurbished in the 90s and again in the time its been there. Not fit for purpose and 4x the price it should be. DO NOT BOOK.…
We booked a room that was described as having a garden view. The photos looked lovely, showing windows/doors down the the ground, but the reality was poor. £120 for a night (no food) at a 3 star hotel. You would expect a lovely room. We were on the 4th floor (the lift wasn’t working), water pressure poor. The room was very tired and dated, it needed decorating at the very least. There was no view, dirty windows. We did complain and the attitude of the member of staff was complacent at best, dismissive at worse.
Upon arrival, as advised by Shearings prior to the trip, we asked to be upgraded to sea view rooms. We paid £30 each. The only view from the window was a very large Tree. My Daughter's view was a partial view of boats on the marina from a very busy road and a grassed area. When we complained to Reception we were informed that they do not have sea view rooms, only front of house rooms? Why did they not inform us of this prior to us paying for sea views? We would never have booked this hotel if we had been informed that the lift was broken. I did not feel that I needed to inform them that I am disabled because I could have managed using the lift. There were 50 stairs to climb to reach my room. I was informed by a previous guest that the lift was broken when he visited months ago! Had we been informed by Shearings that there was a very busy road with a dual carriage way, pedestrian crossing and a roundabout outside the window of our rooms, We would not have booked this hotel. The traffic noise was loud and continuous throughout day and night and I could not sleep. Although breakfast was fine, the evening meals on each night were of poor quality and choice. We struggled to find anything that we could eat and my Daughter found a hair in her main meal on the last evening. Cheap and poor quality food. We feel very unhappy that we were not informed about the very busy road, the broken lift and the fact that they do not have sea views by Shearings prior to the trip. We feel that being informed by Shearing that we could upgrade to sea views upon arrival amounts to miss selling. We feel that we should at very least have our £60 upgrade money refunded. This was the worst hotel experience we have ever encountered - was it modelled on Faulty Towers????…
Myself and my husband were due to come for our anniversary from the 2nd of June until the 5th of June. Wen we arrived at the hotel the woman on reception told me that they didn't have a reservation for us I explained to her I had all the emails from head office confirming the date and they had replied but they had put our booking down to September. I explained to the woman that was not what I booked. I explained that I had travelled 2 and a half hours which the woman said was not her fault I asked her what I was meant to do now as she said they were full woman shrugged her shoulders and said I don't know. After phoning other hotels in the area we managed to get 1 for the night and had to borrow money off family members to pay for it we will never stay at this hotel again
We have just returned from a four night stay at the Torbay Hotel. Firstly I would like to comment on all the staff especially the dining room and bar staff who are lovely. They are friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The reception staff are having to cope with the complaints of a broken lift and a lot of elderly people staying in the hotel having to climb a long way up the stairs, which can’t be easy. The hotel is tired and is in need of a lot of maintenance, our room was really cold because the door to the juillet balcony wouldn’t close properly. There has been complaints about the food but we found it to be ok, there was quite a good choice, and breakfast is lovely. Overall we enjoyed our stay.
Big hotel friendly staff nice and clean but trust me at 55 years of age having to walk up five sets of stairs was not easy with four suit cases was not easy . As seen on previous reviews the lift must have been broke down for some while. I feel for the cleaners !!!
Stayed for two nights as seeing friends great location reception area clean and friendly polite staff. Was originally on the floor but as relocated to third Floor. Breakfast was very tasty and fills you up for the day ahead. Sorry guys would of been a five star but as the left was not working had to climb the stairs but as I have problems with my knees as a little hard other wise a great stay and definitely will be back if the lifts are working keep up the good work
I booked the Torbay Hotel as a Shearing's Self Drive Package I received an email 2 days prior to travelling to say that that the lift at the Torbay hotel was not working and that it was an unforeseen maintenance issue. Three people in my group have mobility issues to some extent, My wife has COPD, my sister has long covid and spent 4 weeks in a coma last year and her partner is on the waiting list for a knee operation, (This was all previously declared when making the booking). Speaking to management and other guests, the lifts have not worked properly for at least 5 months and they are in dispute with the lift maintenance company, so will not be fixed anytime soon. I was assured that the lift was working when I booked and this was obviously a blatant lie and then to top it all off with an email when we were about to travel to say that the lift was out of action due to an unforeseen maintenance issue only compounded the lie. The short notice allowed no time to make other arrangements, (this was probably deliberate on Shearing's behalf) as when I contacted Shearing's after receiving the email, our only option was to grin and bear it, travel to another hotel in a completely different part of the country or cancel and try to book somewhere at another time of the year. This holiday was to celebrate my birthday the previous week and my retirement. I had to carry the whole parties luggage up to the second floor as no offer of help was made available and this aggravated a previous groin injury. As majority of the guests staying at the hotel were over 70 to see the hotel management stand by and watch them struggle with luggage and even trying to get up the stairs with their walking aids all because of a long standing dispute with the lift company beggar's belief and it will only be a matter of time before someone falls or even worse has a heart attack. Surely both Shearing's and the Torbay Hotel has a duty of care to its guests and they should ensure that the lift is repaired immediately or stop taking bookings for the Torbay hotel until the lift situation is resolved. This issue ruined my holiday as we could not enjoy what Torquay has to offer as my sister and her partner were in too much discomfort to explore Torquay following having to do the stairs. It appears to me that shearing's are quite happy to sit back and take peoples money with complete and utter disregard for their wellbeing. I have used shearing's on several occasions but never again. On a positive note, the waiting staff in the dining room were very polite and courteous…
Just back this hotel is dreadful lift had been broken for 10 days reception staff very unhelpful. 1 couple on 2nd floor the other on 3rd floor my brother in law is 80 years old, when asked if we could be on same floor the womn at reception told me hotel was full RUBBISH I went on line and was able to book for the same dates we. Was there said we could upgrade for 45 per night room was dreary carpet filthy windows hadn't been cleaned in months. As for the food it was terrible 1st night had chicken sent back as was cold they sent same plate of food back out still cold 2nd night had curry was up all night being sick 3rd night was minced steak it was a burger with loads of grizzle was disgusting they took our waitress off and she had to go pot washing so didn't get desert 2 waiters for dining ridiculous. When I asked for extra milk the man at reception came out with 2 sachets when I asked for more his remark was ' you will get some tomorrow" after bit of an argument so gave me more ^ it completely ruined our break away avoid this hotel on all accounts…
One of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at, with the only plus being it’s location. The room is just about adequate, although advertised as a “sea view” but this would only be true in the winter as there are large trees blocking the view. Luckily we were based on the 1st floor because there was no lift which has been out of action for 5 months. We witnessed an elderly couple struggling with suitcases to get to their room on the second floor and had to help them as there were no hotel staff available to help. Now for the food - breakfast was adequate, but the evening meal was a total disgrace and inedible. The choice is limited to 3 main meals, one of which had run out by the time we ordered. But talking to other guests and seeing numerous plates (which took ages to be cleared) most left people left the food. Lack of staff throughout and overpriced, but to be honest I wouldn’t stay again if it was free! Would definitely not recommend to anyone!…
