We have stayed at Mercure Exeter Southgate for many business and family occasions. It is always brilliant, spotlessly clean rooms, excellent customer service and always a warm welcome. I’m pleased to say our visit on 1st December 2021 was no different. What was different was the negative comments on trip advisor we saw about guest asylum seekers staying in the hotel. I would like to say that several asylum seeking families were guests at the same time as us. The negative reviews about them in no way reflect our experience. It was lovely to see the children looking so well in the care of their mothers, fathers and grand parents. Congratulations to Mercure for supporting these people in so much need and to all the staff for accommodating them. Also congratulations to Matt for handling the negative feedback so diplomatically. We will always prioritise you when making hotel choices in the future. We’re sure this fantastic act of kindness by Mercure came with its challenges and it was worthwhile. Well done Mercure.

Hotel's Favourite
Ample size room with comfortable king bed, bathroom lovely with luxurious shower. Location was the main reason for choosing and it didn't disappoint, very central to beautiful Exeter. We will definitely stay again, especially as we now know dogs are permitted.

Literal stains on the towels, hair on the floor and an old railcard on the floor too. Said something to the receptionist and was pretty much sent away without any compensation. Just gross really for how much I was paying. Never going again.

I'd read the bad reviews and was concerned about the hotel. But, our taxi driver was surprised when I said I didn't know if it was bad. He said always been good. I think you need to pay for parking on site in addition to the room, but we were travelling by train so not needed. I hadn't realised the time, but we were in our room checked in by 1.30pm by lady with lovely painted long nails. Earlier than we were supposed to be. The room was lovely and spacious, with a huge shower. The bed was large and comfortable. We didn't hear anything from rooms either side of us. We were in room 252. When we had our evening meal Petra was brilliant. Attentive without being overbearing. She was with Lindsey at breakfast too which ran very smoothly. The housekeeping staff were very friendly and, although it says that you should request clean towels, they had given us clean and emptied the bin without us asking. The spa looked busy (some parts need to be booked), but we didn't have time to use any of it. When we checked out, again efficiently by lovely lady with amazing long nails. Exeter is a multi national city and we didn't encounter any problems with anyone. Good: Breakfast buffet all laid out with a good selection of cooked, cereal, continental and juices. There was a little fridge and good hairdryer too. Location is perfect for exploring the city. Just a couple of hundred yards from the Cathedral and 8 min walk from the Quay. Beautiful wooden staircase. Booked through a cashback site and the room came with free wine. Bad: No information in the room. This is probably due to covid. A simple solution would be to put it in the lift and encourage guests to take a photo of it. The air con wasn't working, but there was a good fan in the wardrobe. We kept our window open, but this did mean we heard traffic more. The extractor in the bathroom wasn't working. I forgot to mention these when checking out.

Very disappointed in the overall stay, hotel is in need of a little face lift, we reported a very intense smelling our bathroom on arrival but nothing was done about it We have stayed at this hotel for about 10 years , however it definitely didn’t meet our expectations this year. We also noticed a lot of young men hanging around the public areas
