Enjoyable 2 night stay on Manukan island
August 2023
We loved our 2 nights at Manukan island staying in 2 adjoining Sea view rooms. The staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough for us. We were concerned by the reviews we read in advance about the number of local visitors to the island. During the day the beach area was particularly packed, but there was a separate private beach with loungers which was much quieter. By mid afternoon the island had started to clear out, with the last boat leaving by 4pm. There were only 29 rooms on the island and so after this time it felt like we had the island to ourselves! We also enjoyed an early morning 7am snorkel and saw lots of (small), colourful fish and also swam with reef shark. The turquiouse water was beautifully warm and a delight to swim in!
The staff at the restaurant were very friendly. We enjoyed sitting on the lounge chairs and found the food to be tasty, and the breakfasts particularly good compared to others we have had. We loved the 3 musicians in the evening who played / sang songs of our choice! There were "guest only" bathrooms at the restaurant which were a better option than the public one. Also a good chance of seeing Gerry, the Monitor lizard, in this area.
There is a 25 minute sunset walk along a paved path to one end of the island. We also signed up for a 3 island snorkelling trip - this proved to be just transfers to and from 3 islands, but we enjoyed the different experiences of snorkelling on Sapi, Gaya and Mamukit island. Snorkels were provided. The kids also enjoyed trying parasailing.
Rooms were very comfortable, with huge bathrooms. Wifi was only available in the reception area and very flaky. Definitely would recommend staying on the island if you have the chance, rather than just visiting for the day with all the other tourists.

Dear trailgirl10, Thank you for your detailed and delightful review of your stay on Manukan Island in August 2023. We are thrilled to hear that you had an enjoyable 2-night stay in adjoining Sea view rooms. It's fantastic to know that our staff's friendliness and dedication to service contributed to your positive experience. We appreciate your understanding of the crowded beach during the day and are pleased that you found solace on the separate private beach with loungers. The description of your early morning snorkel and encounter with colorful fish and reef sharks paints a vivid picture of the natural beauty surrounding the island. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed the dining experience at our restaurant, especially the tasty food and excellent breakfasts. The addition of live music and the opportunity to choose songs added to the overall ambiance. It's heartening to know that you explored the island's attractions, from the sunset walk to the three-island snorkeling trip and parasailing. Your feedback on the comfortable rooms with spacious bathrooms is appreciated, and we'll certainly take note of the WiFi concerns in the reception area. Thank you for recommending a stay on the island, and we look forward to welcoming you back for another memorable experience. Best regards, The Management Sutera Sanctuary Lodges

Stayed here as a couple earlier this year and we liked it so much we decided to bring the family along this time. Was pleasantly surprised that the excellent service and attention we received the first time was again evident, even though the people were different, so much so that my kids were wondering why we were getting VIP treatment. The hillside villas - decor, space, upkeep, view and everything else - thoroughly impressed the family. Food was good and reasonably priced and the beach (in front of the hillside villas) were well kept, though staff had to clear some rubbish brought in by the sea in the early morning. Special mention to Erin from the sales office who was tremendously helpful sorting out some reservation problems and went beyond the call of duty to offer advice and assistance. We got all we requested for and more. And resort manager Adamz and his team, especially Aggie, who went out of their way to make us feel more than ordinary guests. Would come again when we can. Five stars!

Very nice Resort with great Resort Manager.
Nice Arang restaurant and bar. Service of employees are unbelievable and very friendly staffs ,Moreover the rooms are nice.
The Manukan Island team led by Adamz do exactly that over and over. Congratulations to all. From the front desk members to the housekeeping staff and landscapers, they all know how to make the stay at Manukan Island Resort the cut above it all. The rooms have been tastefully decorated to a good standard without going over the top, with most rooms taking full advantage of the high set position with excellent views over the White Sandy Beach and Tambun Beach and adjacent city beaches. The No 1 choice
A stay in this resort must be recommended.
I shall come back to this resort as well for leisure and business

We visited the Sutera Sanctuary Lodges Manukan Island Resort for two nights on the 21st of April 2021. There were four of us in the group. I had not visited Manukan for several years having been deterred in the past by the hordes of Chinese tourists that frequented the islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park of which Manukan Island is a part of. The reduced rates offered by Sutera Sanctuary Lodges were an added incentive.
We had an absolutely marvellous time. Three days and two nights of peace and tranquillity in a tropical paradise coupled with excellent service from start to finish by the staff of the Manukan Island Resort.
We had booked two hillside villas and the air-conditioning in our bedroom malfunctioned late in the evening. The staff responded within minutes of us reporting to them of the problem with the air conditioner but nothing could be done till the morning. They offered us the option of moving to another villa further up the hillside but we declined as we had already settled in. Even though there was a ceiling fan in the room, we spent a slightly hot and uncomfortable night. We were in the midst of a very hot and dry spell here and we could not leave the windows open because of the mosquitoes.
The air-conditioning was promptly repaired first thing the next morning and to our delight, the staff of the resort invited us to drinks on the end of the jetty at sundown as compensation for the inconvenience and discomfort we suffered during the night. They laid out mats and cushions at the end of the jetty where we sat and had chilled beer and wine while we watched the sun set. It was such a lovely gesture by the staff of the resort and something we will always cherish.
The restaurant offered a limited ala carte menu which we could understand, as we were in the midst of a Covid pandemic and a Movement Control Order and there were only about fourteen guests on the island when we were there. The quality of the food on offer was entirely acceptable. Breakfast was superb. There was a choice of about six sets of breakfast all accompanied with a cold towel, fresh fruit, fruit juice, yogurt, bread and freshly brewed coffee and tea.
It was lovely to be on a beautiful tropical island with white sandy beaches (sand flies not withstanding), crystal clear aquamarine seas and comfortable, clean, well maintained accommodation and facilities but to me personally, the staff made all the difference. From the staff at the Sutera Marina doing the boat transfers, the front desk and reception staff, the staff of the Arang restaurant, the service staff and the maintenance crew, they were all polite and most importantly kind and caring. They went way beyond their call of duty to make the trip a pleasant and memorable one for us.
Pang, Carl, Roy, Jekster, Bryan, Flores, Conney, Angela, Sherrra, Kelvin, Fahmie, Ag. Afig and all the other staff of Manukan Island Resort whose names I don’t know or can’t recall: Thank you, every one of you.

The plus - awesome staff and hospitality.. from reception to boat crew and checkin and cleaning staff especially the restaurant staff were super friendly and smiling to ensuring that all requests would be accommodated where possible..
A big plus.. the breakfasts are super served and from the charcoal toasted bread corner at Arang (meaning coal) to the varieties of cuisines on offer which are accompanied by helpful hands and smiles from all at hand.
The rooms are nicely appointed and reasonably private and clean.. the water pressure is a little low understandably but the little things like incense and good electrical supply are not un appreciated. Did not miss the poor internet service nor the television satellite.. not what to expect on a desert island..
The Beach is well patrolled by lifeguards and their stations do provide good visual of all swimming and diving spots. and the their flags are good indication of teh swimming conditions and dangers.
The scenery is awesome as are the sunrise views. Pity about the track for teh sunset point and the trekking. Paths closed due to land slips?
The negatives..
The pests and plastics...
Of course there is no control over the floatsam coming in with each tide and the life guards on duty do a good job of cleaning and picking floating rubbish each shift. The probables is larger than the hotel or the park ..
The sandflies are beyond tolerance - every uncovered body part is mercilessly attacked by there agas (local term) even if slathered with antirepellent. Impossible to sit quietly to read or contemplate the view.. the private beach near the hillside lodges was never occupied during the two days I was there for this fearsome reason..
Perhaps the hosts need to drag over the sand to kill teh eggs each morning and afternoon.. this is done to great effect in Thailand and bali beaches just by using plastic chain links attached to a simple spreader bar and pulled over the sand. The edges are then exposed to teh sun and over a week of this the maintenance becomes less complicated. The staff and guests will benefit.
The other disappointment is the over population of sea urchins which are unsightly and dangerous to swimmers with their pointed spines.. They are present by the hundreds both in shallow and deeper waters and within the allocated snorkelling zones in some areas they cover the corals and rocks like monster corona virus with spike proteins.. need some way to control their spread.
Also a note must be made for the flies at the restaurant - perhaps a strict sanitation policy and process will reduce the number of these common pest which are annoying and unhygienic.
Overall there is some great attractions but greater care needs to protect the environment and manages the pollution and keep sanitation and hygiene to a higher standard.

Stayed 2 nights, and they do have breathtaking sunset sunrise views. Traffic is super busy especially during the school holidays season, but after 5pm it gets nice and quiet on the island. Watch out for sandflies and mosquitoes!
The services and facilities offered sometimes are not very clear and there are many different operators with different rates. Best to book everything before hand so you do not need to worry about last minute hassles. There are island hopping services between Manukan, Sapi and Mamutik and plenty of sea-walking / parasailing / snorkeling activities available on all islands.
Foodwise there are only 2 main restaurants and sometimes one of them is closed. Breakfast provided is very hearty and bountiful. For the rooms, while the aesthetics are gorgeous, there is not much privacy from other rooms as you can usually hear your neighbor occupants pattering up and down.
The hiking trail is completely ravaged as of June2022 so no chance of visiting the "Sunset point" on Manukan island.
TL;DR, stick to the water activities, book everything in advance, enjoy the beach atmospheres, and please do not throw trash into the ocean. Both sealife and humans do not appreciate it.

Our stay at Sutera Sanctuary Lodges was amazing. The staff were friendly, attentive and informative.
The room was equipped with an air conditioner and fan. It was comfortable, clean and spacious. There was a sitting area in front of the room which overlooked the garden and you got a view of the sea.
Only one f&b outlet was opened of the 2. The team was great, food delicious and view spectacular.
The swimming pool was opened to guests but disappointing to see it was not maintained.
Keep your walks limited to the restaurant and not venture further unless you want to get eaten alive by mosquitoes.. which we were. But nothing much the resort can do about this.
Only one set of snorkeling gear was provided on a complimentary basis for each room without an option to rent another pair since there was 2 of us. We were instead redirected to a private vendor who was on the other side of the beach. This was a bit weird.
In all, we enjoyed our stay very much!

We stayed in a hill villa split over 3 levels with an amazing view.
Entry level to the villa is the living area plus balcony plus 2 toilets, down a few steps to bath and separate shower, upstairs to the bedroom and balcony.
Comfortable stay, but stained curtain in the main living area a bit off-putting (pic included with review). Bar fridge plus tea/coffee facilities included. TV with multiple channel options.
Zero WiFi at reception which is difficult to confirm ongoing travel plans.
Some staff spoke only a little English, but they always found someone that could help.
As mentioned in other reviews it is busy during the day, especially on a weekend, but there is a private beach for guests only near the hill villas, which was not busy…although pollution in the water is a problem.
It’s disappointing that the resort does not offer a water bottle refill service for guests. We would be happy to pay a fee for the service and it would likely reduce the amount of water bottle rubbish found around the island (and Sabah generally).
The cafe near the Watersport hire shop serves nice meals as an alternative to the restaurant. Can grab a cheap lunch from here.
Restaurant meals were enjoyable and service was prompt. 8am breakfast not ideal if you want an early start to beat the day-tripper beach crowds, but that’s island life.

+1
We visited this beautiful resort last month, were we stayed in a wonderful seaview villa. All you need for a relaxing break you will find here!
All the staff was very friendly, our special thanks to Mr. Adamz who made us feel really welcome and who made sure we got everything we needed.
The served breakfast is generous and nice.
During the day you can just chill out at the beach. In the evening you can enjoy the good food in the restaurant, where also live music is played.
In one: a wonderful relaxing place!
