The Totem Lodge Motel is situated along Highway 16, between bustling downtown Prince Rupert and the Ferry terminals. From the outside (and, I’d argue, from the inside), it looks like an old apartment building constructed sometime in the 1950s. But then, to be fair, practically all of the buildings in Prince Rupert were built around that time or even beforehand. Regardless, this quaint motel has been well maintained and, on top of being a great value, offers the weary traveler a clean and comfortable place to sleep. In terms of location, I think the Totem Lodge is in an ideal place. It’s not quite downtown – and so you don’t have to listen to drunkard shouting around all night – but you’re not so far away that it becomes an inconvenience. In fact, you could walk to busy downtown from the Totem Lodge if you wanted. I’d say it’s probably a 10-minute walk, if that. Driving is even quicker at 2-minutes. Thus, if you want to check out some of the major attractions, including the Rupert Square Mall, Sunken Garden, or museum, you’re certainly at liberty to do so. Additionally, you’re only about a 3-minute drive from the BC and Alaska ferry terminals, so there’s a bit of added convenience there. Finally, don’t let the fact that this motel is just off the highway dissuade you. After all, this is Prince Rupert we’re talking about. The place is practically like a ghost town after dinner, so vehicle noise should practically be a non-issue. Despite its modest look and surroundings, the Totem Lodge features all of the amenities we’ve come to expect of contemporary hotels. First, there’s ample free parking. Second, the motel features free WiFi, flat screen TVs and fully equipped kitchenettes. Finally, the motel features a decent (and free) continental breakfast, which runs from 7AM to 10AM and has all of the usual suspects: Coffee, juice, bagels, muffins, cold cereals, scones, yogurt and seasonal fresh fruit. For a $100 plus tax summer rate, this all represents a very nice value. The accommodations proved to be the biggest surprise. The room was spacious and clean, featured two large beds, full kitchenette and tidy bathroom. What I loved most, though, were the colours of the stove, refrigerator and table-tops. They were this lovely blue-ish colour that totally reminds me of the 1960s (and thus confirms in my head that the building was probably constructed in the 50s). I can see how this would be a nice accommodation for someone staying long-term. For us, though, the Totem Lodge provided a comfy night’s rest and a fitting conclusion to what will probably be our last “big” family summer road trip. I should also mention . . . they have a cat! How cool is that?

First of all, we only booked there because we had 2 small dogs. Entering the motel, the carpet was dirty, the room stunk, a huge, huge spider was crawling around, the pillows inside the pillow cases stunk and had stains, the drawer to the stove was falling off, the window by the kitchen table was cracked in the corners plus had a stick to help lock it, Under neath the beds has not been vaacummed forever, The flooring felt sticky and dirty, The mirror was not cleaned properly, (you could write in it) the Coffee Kerig pods were only 'decaf', the packets of tea and sugar were stained from something, the bathroom had no place to set down your bathroom bag (unless you wanted to balance it on the edge of the tub or sit it on the toilet). All in all, the staff was friendly enough and the room was spacious. But will not stay there again. It was too overpriced. We've stayed in way nicer places for a fraction of the cost and 'nothing' wrong with the accomodations.

The Totem Lodge Motel was just perfect for our two day stay in June and we enjoyed it so much we stayed there in July on our way back. The staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful and the accommodations were very nice with kitchens in the rooms and laundry facilities available onsite. The breakfast was great and I stored my car there a month with no problems. They even found a place to store our four kayaks. I would highly recommend this Motel to my friends, family and all others. It was also located close to the Ferry terminal which made it convenient. Vader the cat helped make us feel at home.

because we got on the ferry from Port Hardy last minute we had not a lot of choices to stay anymore in Prince Rupert. I must say it was great that the host were still up and waiting for us (but I did let them know with my booking that we arrive with the ferry). rooms were quite big - not sure what to say about the colors whoever did choose them - partly it looks quite good and partly it doesn't match at all. we had a little kitchenette in it as well. Breakfast was not really overexicting - but who cares really.
