We just came back from Barcelo Maya and we stayed at the Tropical. All the guests that stay at the Tropical, Colonial, Beach and Caribe can access all the facilities in all 4 resorts including the mall and its restaurants. The difference between the resorts are the theme as well as the layout of the room complex. Within each resort, it was walking distance between the room to the lobby, buffet, pool and the beach. There is no golf cart to take you around because there is no need to. However, there is a double decker bus circulating between all 6 resorts if you need to venture to the mall or to other resorts. There is a Dolphinarius on site at the beach in front of the Caribe, a welcome site for the kids but not so much for adult that love Dolphins. The room & housekeeping (A+) : The room is average and ordinary but the service is extraordinary. Without asking for it, housekeeping setup a sofa bed with beddings in our room for three person stay even though there were already two double beds. All other resort would expect us to share the two beds instead. Our room aircon worked very well and water pressure was excellent. We booked several rooms in the same reservation and the rooms were all assigned ahead of time and they were next to each other. This was a nice touch and it was definitely better than any other resort that we have been to. Housekeeping never arrived in the morning to disturb our sleep because they followed our instructions to clean our room every other day and only when the clean room tag was outside on the door knob. Other staff member visited our room to provide bottle water and drinks on a regular basis. During a thunderstorm with heavy rainfall, our third floor room had water leaks at midnight. We called front desk just to file a report but the maintenance worker arrived in 15 minutes. Then front desk called and asked us to change our room. Since the leak wasn’t that bad, we declined the offer but we were impressed with the responds. One of my family member left the room with the safe door wide open. On their return, they found that nothing was lost and the door remained at exactly the same position after the maid cleaned the room. We also received call almost on a daily basis from Guest Service and asked us if we needed anything. Above all, Barcelo staff were the best we ever had as compare to any other resort. As always, respect is mutual between guests and workers. When you are on vacation, there is no reason to be picky on little thing or complains about waiting for a long time because there is no need to hurry. The mall (A+): It is attached to the Caribe and is a short walk from the Colonial lobby. For Tropical and the Beach, taking the bus is the alternative other than walking. However, we did miss our restaurant reservation once because the bus was 30 min late. The Mall is full of energy with shops, teenage disco, big screen , stage, sport bar, bowling alley, arcade, a Italian and Japanese restaurant. Only the shops, bowling alley and arcade will cost you extra. The A La Carte restaurant (A+) : You have to book the restaurant as soon as you can at Guest Service. The number of reservations you can book is related to the number of nights of your stay. We stayed for 9 nights and we can book 6 restaurants. We tried the Japanese twice, Italian, Steak & Seafood. The Seafood restaurant has lobster on its menu. The 2 Japanese restaurant are both hibachi and you have to order the protein. Lobster is also on the menu and your beef will cook to your liking. The Buffet (B+) : Ther Caribe buffet had more varieties than the Tropical/Colonial. The atmosphere were more like carnival and it seemed to have more theme nights. The Tropical side seemed to be a bit quiet and relax. I found that both buffet had more Mexican style food and less international cuisine than the Iberostar Maya. The Show (A+) : The theater is arranged as several difference terrace and the best seats are the one close to the railings in each terrace. The theater is large and well ventilated but try to sit underneath the big hanging fan from the ceiling so you can feel the breeze. The show had more singers and dancers than any other resorts that we have been to. The Disney musical was most likely licensed by Disney because of the songs and costume. Acrobat and Vegas style show is not to be missed. All the performers were professional and choreography were excellent. Night entertainment (A+) : Beside the theatre and the Mall. You can also visit the Mexican plaza. Right next to the plaza is the disco that only open from 11pm. The disco has a good size bar and a large dance floor. Riding the bus around all the resorts can also be fun. The Beach (A+) : NO seaweed on someday and very little on another day. I do not understand how but may be because the resort is in a bay recessed from the ocean. This was the first beach that we did enjoy in 8 years and everyone was at the beach most of the time instead of the pool. We went to Punta Esmeralda and PDC beach and they were both full of seaweed. There are rocks in the water right outside the Tropical. You can see tiny fish and sea life between the rock in shallow water. We went out to waist deep water with bread from the buffet to feed the fish. Once the feeding started, fish about a foot long swan around us in the hundred. There was no need to snorkel to find the fish because they were all around us. You can also go to the dock to find more fish. The Pool (A) : We found the Iberostar Lindo/Maya pool has more features and characters but the Barcelo pool was still one of the best that we have been to. It was clean and well maintain with lots of lounge chairs. The Weekend Crowd (A) : Most resort reached 100% capacity during the weekend from Friday night to Sunday. Barcelo resort was definitely big enough to handle the influx of weekender. It was slightly less quiet but by far better than other resort. Final Words : There were rules at the resort that were enforced and we agreed with them all the way. 1. Dress code at a la cart restaurant for men in long pants. 2. No food is allowed to be taken out from any buffet so you will not see any leftover food or empty plates lying anywhere near the pool or the beach. 3. No smoking in public area unless designated so we never had to endure second hand smoke. Shows were spectacular. A la carte restaurants were excellent. Staff were well trained, hardworking and friendly so please tips them generously. Kudos to the Management of Barcelo.

We stayed at Jalisco building and it was a bit old and dingy, but very clean, and everything worked fine. The best thing about this hotel complex is its big territory and amazing long beach line with opportunities for snorkeling . Every day we went snorkeling and saw turtles , all kinds of fish and even a nurse shark. Hotel staff is nice and ready to help at all times. These 7 days were exceptional. It's our first time here and no doubt we will be visiting again. ps Delfinarium is very small and it is sad to see these poor dolphins get stuck there. They need to be transferred into more suitable living conditions with a direct access to the ocean.

Everyone at the resort tries so hard to make your stay wonderful. The beach is outstanding, but it is the people working there that make the experience exceptional. We've stayed many times over the past 16 years and it has never failed to make our vacation wonderful. You can do as much, or as little, as you want and walk away happy.

Overall fair experience and don't plan to bring your tots or babies because we had lost our power for 1 day and all my granddaughter's formula which was in the fridge, spoiled, and we had to purchase a new tub which cost canadian almost 100.00.

The rooms get extremely humid, but it's very clean. Very family friendly. The food options are great, I wish there were more variety. Otherwise, an overall great experience which allowed my husband and I to relax and enjoy the warm weather.

We have travelled the Caribbean and aren’t complainers. You get what you pay for and our expectations are on par. This is our 5th time to the Barcelo resorts in Maya Riviera. We’ve stayed at the Palace,x3 Caribe, Colonial. Our favourite is the caribe location due to the amenities of the gym, water sports, Maya mall. The beach area across the complexes are rocky but the pools are spectacular and shaded area are plentiful. The service in the buffet at caribe is wonderful. I don’t normally write reviews but felt like a good honest review is warranted. If you want to book the a l carte restaurants- good luck. We booked the day day we arrived and only two were available. The first one was supposed to be the KYOTO. This restaurant is located in the colonial. Our reservation was for 930 b because that is the only time they had the 7 days we are here. We received wrong directions from a worker in the lobby and after two loops around across two resorts arrived 10 minutes late. The waitress asked for our reservation slips- we weren’t given any. So she looked by last name. She could not find a reservation for us at all. Turns out the guest services who booked our reservations only booked us for the second one at the steak house and even though she confirmed both nights - for some reason we weren’t in the system for the KYOTO. At this point we had to quickly find a buffet to eat our dinner at 9:55 pm as it closes at 10pm. This is very disappointing as we are still here and only have two nights left. We most likely won’t be returning. For what you pay, you shouldn’t have to battle for a dinner reservation.
