My husband and i went Jan 2-9 with friends, and we were disappointed from day 1. when we went to our room, our door was slightly open, the room was dirty, There was 2 double beds pushed together as a king, but they were two different heights and the beds are as comfortable as sleeping on a park bench, the water to the toilet had been shut off, the bathroom door didn't close, the safe was closed and locked and the ocean view the we payed extra for was non existent. we complained to the front desk they simply said, we can't explain the toilet, we'll send someone up to fix the safe and bring a mattress topper (the mattress topper was never given to us), the room is a ocean view category, we wont move your room. So back to the room to wait for someone to fix the safe. The next evening while i was blow drying my hair, all of the power went out. I once again complained to the front desk who after some arguing, agreed to change our room, and once again i went back to the room to wait for someone to come fix the power. apparently, you can only use the hair dryers they provide or the breaker will blow-this information would have been useful at check in. The next room they gave us had a spectacular view and was upgraded from our other room, well maintained and had a mattress topper which helped with the firmness. The restaurants do not require reservations, however in order to eat at a al la cart restaurant, you need to stand in line starting around 5:45 until the restaurant opens at 6:30 and hope to get in before the restaurant fills up for the evening. you would think during covid they would have a reservation system in place instead of having hundreds of people line up together in a small space. the Japanese restaurant was closed 2 out of 6 nights we were there, which made the lines for the other 2 restaurants ridiculously long. There's not a lot of entertainment on this resort if you are not a child. They do not try to get guests involved in beach volleyball, games, etc. and the night show doesn't start until 9:30, so there is a lot of time to kill between dinner and the show. the sports bar is a room with a couple of pool tables and a foosball table. it almost feels like your in a crappy basement rec room instead of a bar. the bartenders however were fabulous! they were friendly and worked hard to make sure everyone didn't wait for a drink. Now for the Covid part- My husband and i went to the desk to book our appointments for the PCR tests, while we were giving the lady at the desk our information our friends just happened to line up behind us, she called our friends up to the counter and said it was easier to tell us the information once, instead of repeating herself-ok makes sense, we each gave our room numbers and separate email addresses. the day of the test, we were waiting in our room and our friends called, the lab techs were in their room, she booked us in a group, because of that we each got each others test results! Thank goodness these were good friends and not someone we just happened to strike up a friendship with while there, its pretty poor service for our confidential medical results to go to someone else. Let me make clear, we never once indicated to her that we wanted to be tested and informed as a group. My husband ended up testing positive for Covid. I informed the front desk and they told me that i wasn't supposed to be in the lobby (even though i was negative) and told me that we needed to pack our things and come back down. We packed and brought our belonging to the front desk, where they cut off our bracelets and replaced them with new ones and told us to go with the gentleman who would show us where our new room was. That was it. I asked if there was any more information i should have and they just repeated to go with the guy to our new room. The room is ok, the bed is very firm, but it was clean and spacious and had a outdoor sitting area. they do take the key to the room so there is no option to lock the door at night, which was concerning as it leaves you vulnerable to anyone being able to walk into your room. Once we were in our quarantine room, we received a call from a lady who told me to write down a email address and send in our breakfast, lunch and dinner orders through email. i once again asked if there was any other information i should have, and she said "ma'am you just need to send in your food order" when i asked if there was a menu i could order off of she said " its the food that we serve in the resort, if you want a hamburger, get a hamburger, if you want a steak, get a steak" when i asked how would i know what my choices are she said "Ma'am have you not ate at a restaurant at this resort, its the same food you get in the restaurants" i certainly did not know i was required to memorize the menus at the restaurants for me to know what my food choices are. Thankfully i had the app downloaded and after some searching, i was able to find the menu's. an option she never mentioned, nor offered to help me with. So i email my lunch order-Can i please have a order of fries and a hotdog with mustard and Jalapeno peppers. What time do i need to have my dinner order in for? She calls back "Ma am, is your husband not eating today? i said no, he's not hungry right now and does not want lunch-you know, due to the stress of being quarantined and not being able to go home. She said "ma'am you need to tell me Person 1 and the order, Person 2 and the order, i don't know by your email how many orders you want. please send the email again. Ok, i send the email again-Person 1 would like 1 order of fries and 1 hotdog with mustard and Jalapenos. What time do i need to submit our dinner order by? She calls back "Ma'am, are you and your husband not eating breakfast or dinner while your here? you need to send 1 email with your breakfast, lunch and dinner order every morning. Please send the email again. Ok, sending it again. i have never been chastised for placing a food order before, let alone 3 times! Once again, if they need food orders placed in a particular fashion, it would be good information to have once you are moved to the quarantine room. When i did get our lunch order is was like 12 fries and a hotdog with mustard and tomatoes on it. When we received our dinner later that night, The waiter gave me my plate and then informed me that the next time i get a meal, i would have to tip, he said this is an extra service and i would need to tip for it. umm excuse me, i payed to be there, it is not an extra service-its included in the booking! The next day, i had to go home while leaving my husband behind (the hotel would have let me stay, but we thought it would be best for me to go home while i had a negative test result) During my husbands 4 extra days there, the service was non existent, breakfast came cold, and between 9-11, lunch came at between 1:30 and 4 (my husband got lunch at 4:17 one day and got a phone call from the front desk giving him heck for getting a friend on the resort to bring him a sandwich because he was starving) Dinners a couple of times didn't come at all! and when they did it was well after 8:00. No one answers the phone at the front desk when you call and no one ever calls to check how you are doing of if you need anything. When you can't just go and get your own food and water, you would hope that the hotel would be a little bit more helpful. My husband told me a few times that all of the guest in quarantine were an after thought of the hotels. When my husband tried to book his second Covid test, he had to call the front desk 3 times before the lady picked up. He asked if she could book the earliest test they had available, she asked him what time he would like it for and he said what ever appointment is their earliest available she replied with "Sir, you have to tell me a time for me to book it for you" he said ok 7:00 am, they booked him in for 10:00 am. The lady who interacted with us over the phone during our stay in quarantine was the rudest person i have ever dealt with at a hotel before. She was completely unhelpful and didn't have a polite thing to say every time we spoke to her. In fact, her rudeness and lack of guidance added to the stressfulness of our situation. For someone who is in the hospitality industry, she is anything but hospitable and i sincerely hope the hotel management takes some actions towards how rude she is to hotel guests. Having to cut a vacation short to go into quarantine and know that you are going to be left all alone in a foreign country while your family goes home is a very stressful situation and this hotel does not approach it you any empathy, guidance or service. We understood when we went that there was a chance we would need to quarantine, but once that happens, it would be nice to be treating with some dignity, we did spend a lot of money and took a big risk to be there. There was 6 of us at this resort, and we are all so disappointed with the treatment my husband received during his quarantine that all 6 of us will never go back to another Rui resort again!

Hotel's Favourite
Riu Caribe exceeded my expectations. I was worried because of the negative reviews but after my visit I disagree with those. To start, the staff is incredible everywhere in the hotel. The property is beautifully kept, and Covid rules are frequently reinforced throughout the hotel. Entertainment was fantastic. Great location (pharmacy/liquor store/gift shop) right next door. Bonus* there’s ramps everywhere in the hotel for those that have wheelchairs! The room: yes indeed they’re outdated, the beds are a bit uncomfortable but very clean. AC works perfectly fine the fan is amazing, housekeeping is back to cleaning everyday, mini bar is stocked daily and the liquor dispenser is back (Yay!!) The pool: very clean, swim up bar is opened again with some restrictions but there is service. The pool side service is a bit slow but nothing too crazy. I do think though that the music by the pool can be a bit more upbeat. The beach: FANTASTIC!! We visited from 8/31-9/4 and there was 0 seaweed. No waves, clear warm water, excellent service when ordering drinks. The food and drinks: DELICIOUS! there’s a big variety from breakfast to dinner and snacks. Warm, tasty and great service. Of course don’t go to a Riu expecting Hyatt or Four Seasons food (sports bar sandwiches were the best). Drinks were all delicious, cold beers, cold champagne and they’re main tequila is Don Julio blanco, reposado and Herradura (yay!!) COVID: we were given a link at check in that we filled out and requested an appt. 24hrs later we received our appt confirmation and time. Upon our arrival for our test our passports were taken, test were done we waited in the sitting area and got our results within 15 minutes via email. another 10 minutes and we received our passports and printed results. Super easy and quick!! (Yay again!!) Thank you: Amelia and Carlo front desk, Joshua, Jose Buffett restaurant. Vicente sports bar, William and Oscar entertainment, Jorge housekeeping (9th floor)

Chose this hotel for a few reasons. Most rooms face the ocean. This side of the peninsula is protected from current any time of the year and is great for swimming, safe for kids. The sargassum/seaweed problem during warmer months does not affect this beach. Check youtube if not aware of problem. In between Punta cancun & Puerto cancun. Closer to downtown. Jr. Suite frontal sea view room had amazing views but since hotel is oldest riu in cancun, only problem with room, need outlets added & updated. Take an extension cord and surge protector for charging needs. Water pressure/shower is awesome! Customer service due to covid and training new people is a major problem. Food is terrible, all buffet and Mexican style not international. Pasta dishes don't have Italian flavor, wrong sweet sauces instead of marinara and not with mozzarella cheese. Rice dishes are soupy. The chefs need to be trained to cook international foods not just Mexican flavor. Steak dishes are terrible don't expect a ribeye to be a ribeye. Enchiladas were bad, VIPS a diner style restaurant near cocobongos has best you'll ever have. Riu needs to hire chef like they have. Going to cancun since late 80's food has gotten much better since then in all hotels because of more international products. Riu's food is like back then when lasagna was made with wrong sauces & cheeses. Riu needs to make some major changes to their food products/service. This can and should be done! Fiesta Americana condessa's all inclusive food, SO MUCH BETTER!

I fell not safe, because we lost money at our rooms and we can’t fell safe, stuff come to our doesn’t matter what time is, from our group some people found some stuff in them room in evening, we don’t know what they was doing.
