My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Excellence Punta Cana. Thats saying a lot because we got stuck there for a few extra days because of Hurricane Fiona. I will give you the Pros and the Cons: Pros: The resort is beautiful. The grounds are well kept and the Excellence Club is worth the extra bit of money that you spend. -The staff goes out of their way to make sure that you are enjoying your stay. We were there to celebrate our anniversary and they added so many special touches that included door and room decorations and special dinners and spa discounts. Special shout outs go to Hendrix (who is the happiest person on earth!), Coca Cola, Mini Barbie, and Joel (the server from Chez Isabelle). -The activities were plentiful. They always had a show everyday. The silent disco was amazing. -The Spa was amazing! Yocasta and Gloria were so professional and I visited the spa 3 times because thats how good it was! Cons: Even though the room was nice, the jacuzzi tub, was not up to par. It had been painted over and the paint was peeling and damaged one of my favorite swim suits. Other than that, the room was great. -The food was a little hit and miss. To me is was mostly miss. My favorite places to eat were Chez Isabelle and the Magna Club for dinner. Other than that, the food was mediocre. But other than that, everything was great. The Excellence Resort Staff went out of their way to take care of us in the aftermath of the Hurricane. We were supposed to leave on Monday and our flight was delayed until Thursday. They let us stay in our same room and enjoy every amenity we had originally!

Hotel's Favourite
I established connection with Ismael with Season Tours before I arrived. He assured me that my husband and i will be very happy at the resort and will ensure we are taken care of. Ismael greeted us at the airport with a luxury vehicle a bottle of champagne to kick off my husband's big birtjday. Arrived at Excellence where we were greeted with more champagne and a very warm welcome by the welcome team. Right away our covid concerns dissapated as we experienced the precautions. Eddison was simply amazing at the reception. Gloria was also extremely helpful. Top notch accomodations the dining experiences at all restaurants especially Magna. Yoel Jose. Eleizer, Adan Indeera Katia, Missy, Julissa, Johnny. Victor. Jose Felix were so warm and friendly, made us feel at home, went out of their way to make the most memorable food drink and dining experiences for us. Ariel and the entertainment team are so talented and created an awesome ambiance filled with fun and entertainment. The Silent party was fun. The Aroma cafe was creme de la creme. The all you can eat bfast is the largest I've seen with the widest variety we've ever seen. The resort as a whole and our room were pristine and well kept 24/7. Pool and beach side drinks food and entertainment experiences were also amazing. Onsite covid testing was a stress free experience. Most definitely will be returning to Excellence Punta Cana. Home away from home for great pampering, fun and relaxation. Just need a little help keeping the mosquitos away. Muchas gracias!!!

Response from The Excellence Collection, Guest Services / Front Office at Excellence Punta Cana
Responded 1 Sep 2021
Dear guest, First of all, we would like to thank you for your recent stay at Excellence Punta Cana and for taking the time to share this review with the TripAdvisor community. We are very pleased to read that we surpassed your expectations successfully since the beginning. As a luxurious all-inclusive resort, we take care of every single detail in order to deliver an unforgettable guest experience, as exceptional and unique as it can be. We pay attention to offer good food quality, keep our grounds and facilities immaculate and well maintained, deliver joy through our shows and entertainment activities, and provide you with excellent service in order to exceed your expectations. In addition, it is a pleasure knowing that you thoroughly enjoyed the benefits of being an Excellence Club guest. We will pass your kind words along to the entire team. Due to the fact that the property is located in a tropical environment, the possibility of the presence of mosquitos is very high. By upholding the standards of keeping insects within the resort to a minimum level, the hotel has a specialized fumigation company which works daily to prevent this type of situation. We look forward to welcoming you back soon and have another opportunity to pamper you with our superb service. Please, receive our warmest regards from The Excellence Collection.

The resort in general was great. Amazing staff who make you feel at home. Thankful our room had AC to conquer the humidity, we splurged on a club suite with a private pool and it was awesome. Wouldn't recommend traveling during hurricane season, the resort shut down and many amenities such as restaurants, bars, pools, spa, game area, were not accessible.

Hotel is very nice, the grounds & beach are beautiful, restaurants were very good for an AI but having previously stayed at the Excellence Playa Mujeres, the level of service for Excellence Club areas was below expectations and we didn't feel that it was worth the upgrade. We had some check-in issues that could have been handled by the Excellence Club concierge a lot better and quicker than they did. The preparation and response to Hurricane Fiona was excellent, given the circumstances.

Even in the middle of a hurricane, this resort was still absolutely amazing! Amazing staff, amazing location, beautiful hotel on the inside and out. Perfect place to relax, and have fun! From tennis lessons in the morning to lounging by the pool, we had the best time.

Words can't express how much we enjoyed our trip! Everything was wonderful. First of all, I need to express sincere gratitude to Ruth DeMuth with TripGuy Travel. She provided guidance and planned everything down to the smallest details. Her level of customer service is unmatched and her knowledge is endless. I highly recommend contacting her if you are considering a trip. We gave her our budget and dates and she took care of the rest. Because of her meticulous plans, everything went perfectly, even our flights during this crazy summer.  The resort is just what we wanted. It is charming and rustic, laid back and less formal than other Excellence properties. In our opinion, that is a positive because we are a very chill couple who spend every day under a palapa on the beach. We are already considering a return trip here.  As you pull up to the resort, you are greeted in the large open air lobby. When you reach the top of the steps there is a view of the ocean and a tropical feel. We were EC so we were taken to the club check in, which was calm and quiet, a very nice respite after traveling for many hours. We were then taken to our room which was exactly what we requested. We were on the second floor with a gorgeous view of the ocean as well as overlooking the EC pool and a breathtaking vantage point to watch the sunset. Housekeeping was excellent and so was nightly turndown service. The mini bar was well stocked and refilled daily. We left a note asking for extra water or soda and it was always fulfilled.  The resort is laid out so that the common spaces including the lobby, restaurants, the main plaza and theater, the courtyard and many bars are centrally located. The EC wing is to the right when facing the beach while the non-EC wing is to the left. The EC side includes Magna, a nice pool bar with a covered sitting area facing the beach, a pool with a beach view and the EC beach, both with plenty of servers. The cascade pool is located in the garden area that is quiet, private, and seemed to be protected from the winds. We never had an issue finding a palapa on the beach or seats at the pool. Jordy is the best beach server that you will encounter, he is always smiling and friendly.  We headed to dinner each night between 6:30-7pm, and never had a wait. We also used room service a few times and found it very good with the added plus of arriving sooner than promised. A nice touch was that they called us when it was going out for delivery so that we could be prepared. We spent most evenings at Prelude Bar. It is a great place to hang out for the evening because you are outside with the tropical breeze and the sound of the ocean but in a spot where you can still enjoy the entertainment from the theater. Berroa and Yordania will make you smile! They are extremely hard working and very personable, go visit them and thank me later. Hearing her sing and watching them dance is a guaranteed mood booster. There is a boardwalk that runs the entire length of the resort in front of the main pool. The vibe on the non-EC side seemed vivacious and people were having a great time with the music and entertainment team. If you are looking to make friends and play pool games, non-EC is the way to go at this resort. There was music playing, there were palapas around the pool and boardwalk and always available chairs on the beach. The Lobster House for breakfast and Oreganos for lunch are conveniently located around the pool and Las Olas is on the beach. There was beach volleyball, pool volleyball, and a bar poolside. It seemed like there was always something fun going on.  Snorkeling was not advisable at this resort but body surfing or just playing in the waves was a lot of fun. Be mindful and have your wits about you because the waves can get very strong, with a powerful undercurrent. They have attentive life guards so that was reassuring. I had heard that the waves will claim your sunglasses without warning and yes, we can attest that this is true. The beach is very long and easily walkable which made for enjoyable mornings and afternoons.  Overall, the service was great. This is an all inclusive resort so tipping is not necessary and I respect that it is a personal choice. However, once you experience the lengths that the associates will go to make you happy, tipping seems more than appropriate. And the tips are always appreciated. We seemed to surprise a few people when we tipped and it made us so happy to see their smiles. There were two exceptions to the excellence, the first being the beach concierges. They were basically non-existent. We saw them greet people on occasion but definitely not on a regular basis. This was the biggest surprise and let down at this resort versus the other properties. Second, I'm not sure if the gift shop is part of the hotel or a separate operation, but the women in there are extremely rude and unpleasant. The store has decent prices on the local rum, better than duty free at the airport, but it almost wasn't worth it to have to deal with the sales people. In order to be completely transparent, we loved the lush foliage and water features in the lobby and lining the walkways to the rooms. However, if shiny and new with pristine surroundings is what you are looking for, you will be disappointed. Due to the open layout that is exposed to the elements, the wear and tear is definitely visible, which is to be expected in an older resort. You are always aware that you are in a tropical locale, which we personally liked. While the age may be showing, the housekeeping standards are very high. We personally didn't find the weathering to be a deal breaker but I know that it is for some people which is why I mention it.  On a final note, our transfer was with Discova. The driver was very helpful, professional, and friendly while the vehicle was extremely clean. He shared trivia facts along the way and helpful tips for our stay, as well as giving us a QR code to scan if we were interested in excursions during our stay. We didn't choose to venture out, but I would have used them without hesitation if needed. The return driver was due at the resort at 9:05am and arrived at 9:04. Again, friendly and full of even more trivia. I would definitely recommend them.

We are sadly leaving the resort today. It was one of the best vacations I’ve had. The resort was beautiful, the food was fantastic but the staff was the best part. We were there during Hurricane Fiona and the staff made sure we were all taken care of. They always had a smile on their face and were always happy to help. We’ve made some great friends and definitely looking forward to going back! Shout out to Coca Cola, Mini Barbi, Shaggy, Claudia and Hendrix!!! They were the best part of this trip. I look forward to seeing them again.

My friend turned 40 this year and wanted to take a girls’ trip to the DR. She planned everything and I was just along for the ride. We ended up at Excellence Punta Cana, and our trip coincided with Hurricane Fiona. I cannot say enough good things about the incredible staff at the resort!!!! They took such good care of us! They are hardworking and kind. We actually probably had more fun because of the hurricane, since we couldn’t use the beach or pools for a few days. We made friends with the staff, played games, and relaxed. Extra special thanks to Hendrux, Shaggy (Bernardino), Coca-Cola (negro y dulce, Luis Miguel), Mini Barbie (Karen), Claudia, and Luz for helping us make the most of our trip. We can’t wait to see you all again! Hasta leugo!

Our most recent experience at the Excellence Punta Cana was extremely disappointing. We arrived the day prior to hurricane Fiona hitting and came home two days after. Because we tried to cancel our trip so last minute, we were told that if we did not go on our trip as planned, we would have a penalty equal to 100% of the trip cost. The hotel did their best during the hurricane, but it was still disappointing. I don’t blame them for the poor weather and I know the staff did an amazing job trying to get things back to normal, but it was still not the experience I expected. Prior to the storm hitting, it was a beautiful and sunny day! However, “in preparation” the hotel closed down all of the pools. Big bummer. They also cancelled all of their resort activities for the next three days aside from Bingo, Karaoke, and a few others. The night the storm was scheduled to hit, they came by the room and brought boxed lunches for us…boxed lunches that were just some rolls and a bit of fruit. They said that this is for you until restaurants open. “But when will they open?” Who knows, “it could be dinner tomorrow.” So a few rolls to last us until potentially tomorrow night? Ok. The day after the hurricane hit, you could tell the resort was disheveled. We weren’t allowed to leave our rooms per the resort until they sent out the all clear. They said they would send out an update via the app letting guests know when food was open and it was safe to leave their rooms. They didn’t. FYI everything opened at noon. That evening, there was no update as to what would be open for dinner. The next morning? No updates again. Additionally, there were no updates on swimming in the beach, the pool, etc. It’s the lack of updates is what made this experience so frustrating. We were here for three full days and didn’t get to use the amenities (pool, beach, spa, etc) because of the storm. Again, I don’t blame the resort for the weather AT ALL, though I think they could have left them open a little longer and opened them earlier. For comparison, we had friends who stayed at a resort down the road and they were able to access their pool up until the evening the storm hit. But I don’t blame the resort for taking precautions. I would also like to say that I made the hotel aware of all of these issues and they did nothing. I went to the front desk and asked for some sort of refund (since we missed essentially a days worth of food, had zero entertainment, and didn’t use the pool or beach) and was treated like a second class citizen for not booking direct. When it was time for checkout, I made my feelings clear to the man who called my room and his response was essentially “that stinks but have a great night!” I’m sorry, but I gave you two opportunities to remedy the situation, and you chose to ignore what I’m saying. Some sort of gesture of good faith would have been nice (2 free nights, free spa treatment, etc.) considering I had to suffer through this vacation and if I didn’t come, I would have been fined $1,200. What a total scam. To top it all off: they offered compensation for people who booked direct. I’m sorry, but we all had the same experience, stayed at the same hotel, didn’t have access to the same amenities, and ONLY select people are the ones your resort actually cares about? This is a total bummer considering in the past we HAVE booked direct, but this time we decided to use points to book. As for the room, the pillows in our room were absolutely terrible. I called and requested new ones, and they were also flat and old. Aaaand there were what I assume to be blood stains on our sheets. To be honest, I expected a lot more from an Excellence property. We stayed at one last year and had an AMAZING experience! Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll be staying with them in the future.

This was my first trip to Punta Cana, but it will definitely not be my last. The Excellence hotel offers a variety of cultural restaurants, daily shows, pool activities, and generally caters to your every desire. From the complimentary glass of champagne at check-in to the beach bag in your hotel room, this hotel pays attention to the details. Especially worth mentioning is the hydrotherapy treatment at the spa. It targets different areas of the body and is so relaxing. I highly recommend it.
