This was a last minute booking, I was looking for a nice relaxing place to stay which was dog friendly. As mentioned by previous reviewers this is not a hotel, however, the staff were extremely helpful when booking, received email with codes for external and internal door. We were in Room 10 which looked over the fields, very quiet, clean and nice size room, bathroom a little small but have had smaller in 5* hotels! There were yoga classes, holistic classes and treatments available to book, I booked a full body massage for my husband which he said was excellent. There was an excellent bar and restaurant on-site, the staff were incredibly friendly and the food was outstanding, other reviews said it is pricey, but I thought it was good value for the quality of the food which is all locally sourced. The cafe was closed after we returned from our walk on the first day and even though they had finished after lunchtime service and were preparing for the evening, they did not mind us sitting there having a coffee, it was very relaxing on the sofa's. There was also a vegan cafe on-site, again the staff were incredibly friendly, the food was very good and the matcha green tea latte was amazing! There is a local brewery next door, which we walked over to, again dog friendly. Highcliffe Beach is less then 10 minute drive, as it is February there is free parking and dogs are allowed on the beach, lovely walk and really nice restaurant near to the car park with dog friendly area, we got lucky in getting a table, it get's busy and lots of people had pre-booked.
The cleaning staff were extremely friendly, on our first day asked if we would like our room serviced, I did not realise this was on offer and had made the bed, but still said yes so we could get fresh towels.
It is a little bit more expensive than some of the B&B's nearby being it does not offer breakfast, hence why I have not given it a 5 rating. However, I would definitely stay here again.

I never write reviews but my partner purchased this as a surprise detox / relaxing weekend away.

The main flaw is in the name ‘Retreat’. Some of the images on the website look very crisp, fresh and light but the reality is a little different. For me the little touches make all the difference. Up close you really see the cracks in this place. In places the decor is really in need of updating, the doors to the rooms remind me of cheap motel rooms.

On entering the building you aren’t greeted and it’s all rather gloomy, not the best start. Terrible carpet, weird pillows on sofas which don’t match. At it’s core, there is a beautiful building here but that’s where it kind of ends. Whoever did the soft furnishings needs to seek professional advice. Not sure what you can say, it’s just odd.

Our room was pretty decent (lovely bathroom), it was a good size compared to a lot of hotels but the road literally 10 metres from the window was incredibly busy. It’s didn’t really shout ‘relax’.

Why is this place called a retreat? There are classes available such as yoga but that’s where it ends. No pool facility, no hot tub, no health food, creepy lifeless hotel and corridors. Where are the hotel staff?

As an average hotel it works, it has a cafe which was lovely, a restaurant (we didn’t eat there as the menu looked like a pub menu and we really wanted something different so headed to a place called Limewood (they actually have a spa) and a food place called Raw and Cured), it was excellent.

The gardens are lovely too but even from there you constantly hear road noise.

So to sum it up, if you want a cheap stay and care nothing about luxury or relaxing, go for it. If you want a relaxing retreat, don’t bother.

You must understand that this place is NOT a hotel, nor b&b. There are no staff other than housekeeping. You basically rent a room and do your own thing. Our room (8) was clean and comfortable with ensuite, tv, tea and coffee - like you'd expect in a regular hotel. You are given codes for the doors and you can come and go as you please, any time. It's on a main road so rooms at the rear are likely quieter.

The housekeeping staff were incredibly helpful and friendly.

Different from a regular hotel, you make your choice! In our experience, there is nothing terrible here. And of course, it is very dog friendly with dog beds in the rooms.

It is a quiet affair with a well-being vibe. There is a posh restaurant next door but quite expensive and you can get breakfast or lunch on site.
The Retreat is a base from which to explore and enjoy the New Forest area. Some reviews are very negative, possibly due to thinking this is a hotel. It isn't.
Lovely grounds for your dog to run around in. Easy access to all of the New Forest. During our stay, there were no barking dogs or any other noises to bother us.
Recommended.

The room was tiny. The bed was really uncomfortable. The road noise was unbearable you had to keep windows closed. It's run like an Airbnb. No reception. You're emailed a code for the outside door and your room door the day before means you don't need a key. One tiny wardrobe no table or chair so no where to sit down. Wouldn't recommend.

We were worried after booking and then reading reviews as some were terrible but I have to say we loved it there! I personally like the fact that it was 'self service' with the key code entry which meant at least you didnt have to worry about losing the keys! so I thought it was a great idea, and loved the independence of coming and going. Plus you could sit out the back with a lovely view of fields with your own bubbles etc which obviously you couldnt do in a normal hotel. Our room was lovely so no complaints there, ok there were a few scuffs here and there but we have stayed at expensive hotels where its no different. We stayed in Room1 which was to the side so a bit of road noise but then again we live on a fairly busy road so no bother to us. The restaurant next door was lovely as were the staff so that was a bonus having that on the doorstep. Maybe the booking websites should make it more clear about the no staffing situation and then people would know before they arrive, like I say, no issue to us but obviously it is to some people and unfortunately it means people then go in to the restaurant to ask if they can help with issues which isnt their responsibility as they are a separate business. I personally would not want a room where dogs have stayed but not sure how or if you can specify. We would definitely go back though.

We booked to stay here as a treat for our anniversary, wish we hadn't bothered. The rooms are tired and dated, not as they appear online at all, we felt cheated. Firstly we couldn't get into the room due to not being sent a key code, a big oversight especially as the building isn't manned. We had to call a phone number and waited nearly half an hour for them to resend the code, hardly a hassle free relaxing break. Once we got in the room the cleanliness was questionable, considering the lack of furniture in the room (no sofa or seating other than a rickety restaurant style chair) hardly a difficult thing to achieve. The only redeeming feature was the restaurant Offbeet which we found fabulous and made our stay worth the hassle. We were looking forward to returning to try their new menu (which changed with the seasons), however we have seen that it has been replaced by a new business which now serves mostly meat based dishes. Surely this is against the ethos of 'The Retreat' which is what attracted us in the first place. Needless to say we shall not be returning or recommending The Retreat anymore.

I must admit that I really expected a lot better, honestly I am very disappointed with everything.

Rooms are old and outdated, located next a very busy and loud main road, terrible management.

The restaurant when we were there was was lovely with great food but they have closed that (fortunately, the restaurant offbeet is still operating in southsea) , so nothing to recommend.

I was a bit worried about staying here as I’d seen some bad reviews, but I needn’t have worried. The room was clean and nice and the accommodation was comfortable. The bed was too hard for me but husband was happy, so it’s all personal taste really.
It’s really near the beach ( via car) and has a brilliant on-site restaurant. We will stay again.

Myself and my partner had a fantastic stay at the Retreat. Our room was beautiful and full of charm and character, set in a lovely building on stunning grounds.
The staff were always friendly and helpful, giving a warm welcome. The on site cafe served an amazing breakfast, again the staff were lovely.
We loved our stay from start to finish and look forward to visiting again.
