Meon Valley Hotel & Country Club delivers a mix of experiences, with several guests enjoying the clean, comfortable rooms and leisure facilities, yet some finding the rooms poorly maintained and outdated. While the hotel's atmosphere is sometimes described as cozy and festive, other times it's perceived as dark and uninviting. Guests appreciate the reasonable value but express dissatisfaction with extra charges, notably for pool access. The service quality is inconsistent, with commendations for friendly staff contrasting with complaints about disorganization. Reviews on cleanliness also vary significantly.

Myself and my partner arrived last night with the intention of a lovely relaxing spa weekend with lovely evening meal in a restaurant it being a so called 4* hotel. When we entered to the reception where it just looked like no maintenance was done what so ever. There was leaves all over the place no one cleaning that area only the person at reception. The man at reception was very quiet but nice and we received our keys for our room. We made our way to the room. The walls and carpets were so outdated and grim I felt like it was like staying at a 2* seaside hotel. We got to our room and it was a little dim and very cold there was no thermostat on the wall we could see as the room was freezing when we entered but then realised old rusty looking radiators which didn’t heat the room quick. We thought we could work with it as it was only one night and we’re looking forward a romantic restaurant meal just the two of us etc then relaxing spa access tomorrow. When exploring we made our way to the bar area which we thought seemed like a sports bar full of old men and family’s with screaming children running around. It was only when we realised a small section of this was also the restaurant too which we were not happy about. We stayed one drink and decided with the atmosphere and noise it felt like being in a Wetherspoons pub- definitely 4* material - no mask were worn and people wandering in more than groups of 6 dining by our table. We then decided to go home and not stay as we would be more comfortable in our own bed at home. This was very disappointing and we were really looking forward to a more romantic getaway stay and this hotel isn’t the one for that type of thing!! I will be contacting groupon and hotel inspection as the hotels cleanliness needs to be re visited (bathroom moulds) stained walls carpets etc. We will be requesting our money back As well as making a formal complaint as we didn’t stay the night nor did we have any dinner or breakfast. This hotel could be so much more if effort was put in and we were worried about other reviews first but experiencing it for ourselves we realised this wasn’t for us and in no means should be classed as a 4* unless serious reconstruction is done and has a full refurb. I will be contacting higher sources and the customer service team to explain our experience and if I do not receive a full refund for not even stating at the hotel I will be very angry and taking this action further.

Not impressed! Disappointing weekend!

I stayed here for work and while first impressions of the foyer were good that was one of the few good things.

The room clearly hadn't been cleaned properly, crumbs on floor, no bin, half a toilet roll and quite dated. The TVs were very large which was nice (although one constantly restarted). There were huge cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, sprinklers and curtains. All the lights in the common areas had cobwebs on as well.
After a few days here and asking for housekeeping service they did not feel the need to replace toiletries or toilet roll (the weekly allocation is half a roll it seems) so I had to get my own from reception. I had to ask for a bin twice as the room did not have one.

The "restaurant" - don't bother. I was told that I did not need to book just turn up anytime, so I did when it was barely half full and told to come back in 45mins. Then had to wait 10mins to be acknowledge and seated at a dirty table. A burger and Coke was over £16. The menu was basically cheap burgers, cottage pie or fish & chips. I ate there once and never went back. Better service in McDonald's. Breakfast was much better with a good selection and better service.

The gym is actually very well equipped however the whole area needs refurbishment, lockers are falling apart, rusting metal, peeling paint and missing tiles. The pool area could be brilliant if you weren't worried about the roof falling in. You also need to bring your own towel from your room.

The comment card from the previous guests in my room had been left out for me, complete with all their personal information written on it. Surprisingly they felt the same as me with the cleanliness of the room and restaurant service.

My overall experience of this hotel is the staff just don't care. This is shown by the amount of simple cleaning that does not happen and the sheer number of lights that just need a new lamp. The front desk staff were very helpful and professional - however have been let down by everyone else.

Summer holidays and very busy in the hotel
Staff were fabulous in every aspect of our stay. Breakfast was a good price and we paid at reception as we didn’t have it in our room rate and we were glad we did - the choice catered for everyone and eat as much as you can buffet style. We had dinner a couple of nights in the bar and because it was so busy in the hotel we did have to wait some time for our meals but we had been told at the time of ordering this would be the case. Again, glad we did wait as the fish and chips was tasty and not dripping in fat like some restaurants dish up, we both really enjoyed it and also the apple crumble pudding was delicious. There was no room servicing by housekeepers due to covid but as we stayed a week, reception did say if we needed extra towels, tea, sheets etc they would provide. We found morning reception staff to be quite rude and unhelpful when we asked for new bedding sheets, instantly jumped at us housekeeping aren’t servicing rooms. I explained happy to do myself and told bedding would be left outside room but this never happened. When I then came down the next evening to reception as by then we needed clean towels and more toilet roll, I was quite abrupt before I started due to being let down on the bedding but once I’d explained my dilemma to the lovely helpful lady on reception that afternoon, think her name was Charlotte, she made sure I received all the items I had asked for there and then and apologised for it not happening the day before. Also the staff at the pool were very helpful and pleasant when we used the gym pool and sauna. Had a very nice holiday at this hotel and the location is great for a peaceful getaway - even though it was the height of the school holidays we still had fun and great time.

My partner had stayed before and we live locally, don’t get much time off but decided to have a night away and he suggested Meon Valley.

It was so much better than just a night away.

For only £10 we could bring our well behaved dog.
The two chaps on reception were gracious and helpful when we arrived earlier than expected, then the bar staff were charming while we had a coffee.

We enjoyed the gym, pool and steam/sauna the retired to a wonderful suite with everything and more that we needed for a restful and delightful stay. AMAZING sitting room, bedroom and bathroom with lovely decor and toiletries.
The whole place smells fresh and is clean to standards rarely upheld by 5* places.

Sophia on reception made a fuss of the dog and was polite, friendly and helpful each time we saw her, even fussing over our Lurcher and making a point of remembering her name which was lovely.

The staff in the golf shop were beyond well mannered and all staff made us feel totally at home which was great.

After a super night’s rest we used the gym then went for an above par breakfast and left elated and keen to book again.

A hidden gem, whether you like golf or not it is deserving of more than its rating and we couldn’t recommend it more highly,
Looking forward to returning regularly.

Two friends and I booked a trip to play a little golf and stay overnight at the adjoining Hotel. The golf was wonderful; a great course with very friendly staff and members. No complaints, and would play the course again.

The hotel, however, was as poor as I've ever stayed in. During covid, they sealed the 'cleaned rooms' with tags to ensure rooms were not to be entered once cleaned. In theory, an excellent procedure. However, after breaking that seal and entering the room I was mortified. Empty beer bottles, a bag of clothes, empty wrappers and popcorn on the floor? It was horrendous. Not good enough on any day but with todays current Covid concerns, ridiculous. Immediately went to the front desk to be told there were no rooms I could be moved to, and I would have to return at 11pm to check if they had a 'no show' for a booked room. If they didn't, I would have had to return to that same room. Not 5 minutes later, they found an empty room for me to move to; which did seem to be cleaner, only extraordinarily hot during the night.

The dinner and breakfast included was a farce. Dinner took a couple of hours to arrive, with almost zero Covid procedures in place. The following morning, the chef didn't arrive at all, which upset almost everybody I passed, myself included, and many guests left the grounds to seek breakfast elsewhere.

The golf club seemed almost embarrassed to be associated with the hotel chain, as one staff member informed us she had recently handed in her notice because of the decline in standards.

Use the golfing facilities as much as you can, I can't speak highly enough of the course and personnel, however avoid this hotel at all costs.

This is the first negative review I've ever written, and giving it 1 star is wey above what it deserves.

BEWARE!

Just got home from a golf break here. The golf course is in fantastic condition and it’s a great challenge.

The hotel however is an absolute shambles. The staff are trying there very best but I’m guessing the management don’t care!

We played 18 holes and was told check in was 3pm. We got into reception at 3:40pm and was told our room wasn’t available until 4:30pm as the cleaners were still doing the rounds. The car park for the hotel was near on empty and this hotel must have 100+ rooms. We asked if there was anywhere to grab a drink after being out on the course in 30c heat to be told the bar isn’t open till 6pm and the club shop had shut early. The golf course was absolutely rammed and if they had the bar open they would have taken in thousands of pounds during the two days we were there, so I’m still shocked it’s completely shut in the day. There are anti bac stands everywhere and signs for masks, but nobody was wearing masks at all. The anti bac stands didn’t all work either.

Ten minutes later the manager on duty told us our rooms were ready! We had room 314 and it didn’t seem to bad on first inspection. Big room, two double beds, massive tv and a newish bath room. Brilliant, we got showered and headed into Wickham for food and beers as the hotel menu for food was terrible.

We arrived back at around 10:30pm and walked towards our room to be greeted by the corridor smelling like someone was growing weed in the ceilings. Luckily we couldn’t smell it in our room.

Onto the next morning we walked up to a pre booked breakfast time at 8am. Bearing in mind our tee time was booked for 9:40am we was greeted with a 15 person queue to order food. We finally got a heated up full English at 9:05am which didn’t taste great at all. There is only two staff running the whole breakfast time whilst we was there and there was about 20-30 guests to serve. What an absolute shambles, I feel for both ladies who were only trying their best in terrible conditions.

We then played a final 18 holes of golf. We was held up on the 10th tee because a family had decided to have a picnic on the 10th fairway (I kid you not I couldn’t believe it).

If you are coming here for a golf break, bring beers for after and keep them in a cooler in the car! If your looking to just use the hotel, DO NOT! It’s in a poor state!

The hotel is set in lovely grounds and the pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi is clean. However, those would be the only positive things that I can say about this hotel. When we arrived for check in (at 3pm as stated) we were told that our room was still not ready and we were asked to wait a further 15 minutes. When we did eventually get to our room, the room hadn’t really been cleaned properly as the carpet still had bits on it, the shelves were dusty and the bath tub had hair in it. The toilet still also had stains in it.
Bearing in mind we had travelled over an hour and a half to get to this hotel, we then went up to the bar to grab a bit of late lunch only to be told that no food is served between 3pm and 5pm! This was after we waited 10 minutes to even be acknowledged!
The next day, we were out in town the majority of the day, and didn’t get back until 3:30pm only to find our room had not been serviced! I rung reception and told them, there was no apology, but I was told somebody would be sent to clean it. So we went swimming and got back at around 6:00pm only to find that the beds were the only things that had been made along with the towels being replaced. The hoover had not been done. Surfaces had not been cleaned and neither had the bathroom. The tea and coffees hadn’t been replenished and we had not been given any additional toilet paper!!
The staff in this hotel are not very friendly and nor are they very attentive. When we checked in, we were not told where to go for breakfast, what way to go for our room or what the timings for breakfast were! Breakfast was also far from great. It was stone cold, the sausages were hard and dry and the bacon had remnants of white fat all over every single piece which made it look so unappealing!
We will really not be going back here. We spent both nights here truly disappointed with where we were. The only plus side was that we got to spend some quality time together as a family!!!!

Having stayed here back in May 2019 we found the hotel to be adequate for a short family stay over. The children loved swimming, driving range and playing tennis. It wasn’t an amazing hotel but for the price we paid, we felt it was good value and we were willing to overlook some of the issues. This time however, we were throughly disappointed. The spa and swimming pool area is falling in to disrepair, holes in the ceiling, cracked tiles and the pool was freezing. The children couldn’t stay in there more than half an hour as it was so cold. The room itself was adequate but not clean, there was dust on the skirting boards, bedside table and the was someone else’s hair clip under then bed, left over from a previous occupant! The room needed some TLC with worn carpets and upholstery. The TV didn’t work properly and turned itself off and back on every 10 minutes or so. We reported this to the front desk and they said they would get maintenance to have a look, no one ever came! I mentioned it again on check out, no apology or partial refund offered, just a simple “I will get housekeeping to look at that”.
For us the food was a real issue. No lunchtime menu, just some pre-made tasteless paninis or soup. The soup claimed to vegetable but was grey and the rolls that came with it were so hard the children had to leave them for fear of breaking their teeth!! Staff were apologetic but didn’t offer any resolution. The dinner menu was so poor we went out for dinner. Extremely limited choice, particularly as we had vegetarians in our party. Breakfast was lukewarm at best and despite us getting there for 8.30, lots of items were already all gone.
Such a shame as this hotel had the potential to be good, nice setting and area but unfortunately not a nice place to stay.

No way near 4 star hotel!! Do NOT stay here. Wish we had read the reviews before booking.

Staff were unhelpful and unfriendly, food was mediocre and the room was filthy and very dusty. Not acceptable under normal circumstances and certainly not during this Covid pandemic.

There was a sticker on the door stating the room had been deep cleaned but on entry it was clear this was not the case... even to the point of no toilet roll had been replaced in the bathroom and the general layer of dust across all surfaces.

New staff on duty inadequately briefed on the orientation of their own hotel! Such things as where we were seated and how this was related to our order was non existent! No eye contact from staff walking around and obviously not service orientated or trained.

Lots of Covid signs and sanitizer but no sign of people wearing masks whilst moving through the hotel or hotel staff reminding customers arriving in reception. Even some staff were not wearing masks!

Food was basic. Beef lasagne was served as just that. No side salad or garlic bread. Cutlery was placed on the table not wrapped in a napkin.

Tables in the restaurant needed repair. Obvious signs of attention required in bar area with dusty shelves for glasses and cobwebs in corners.

Our stay felt uneasy and unsafe and we will not be revisiting.

This hotel needs a revamp, it was dirty and dated. With Covid19 about, although they had sanister stations around the hotel, they still need to improve on hygiene. The high touch points need to be cleaned regular, whether or not they supply sanister, the doors were not wiped they had black hand marks on them, the window seals in the outside seating area hadn't been cleaned for months. The breakfast was a buffet, although they made you wear a mask whilst collecting your food, everybody touched the handles on the food containers and the serving utensils, A member of staff even filled the fried bread dish up that had no lid and put the serving utensil on top of the food that everybody had touch. Great way to give everybody COVID19. I overheard a group that had the sanister sticker on their door, stating room had been cleaned, they entered and found the bins full and used t bags on the side, makes you think were the sheets even changed. (They did look clean when we got there) The dirt put me off using the pool so can not comment. The shower was also broken in our room. I wouldn't be returning and wouldn't recommend
