This is a wonderful place. You would have little idea making the turn off the road towards Amarelo, only a few hundred meters away, that it is such a tranquil sanctuary.

Beautifully designed in every way, wonderful pair of swimming pools, lovely landscaping, lots of quiet spots amid the trees and flowers to hang out on beds.

It is run by a lovely very kind and friendly couple, Carmen and Filippe. They really care about the place, looking after it with great love.
They are even considerate of the frogs who live around the spa pool, by avoiding chlorination that can harm the frogs. This means that the water may be a little green, which can upset some superficial urban types who expect sterility at the expense of the natural world. Good for Carmen and Filippe for standing up for nature.

We stayed in Suite Barragen, a trio of rooms further down the hill facing a stunningly beautiful wooded gorge. Magical. If you do stay in one of those rooms, be aware that there is a jacuzzi tub in the floor at themed of the end facing the view - fine in the daytime, possible dangerous at night, so ask for the cover for the tub for safety reasons.

There are also a couple of fantastic beaches very close by to the south : Praia do Almograve, and a short walk over the cliffs to the north, even more private : Praia do Brejo Largo.

If you are looking for a busy, hectic area with nightlife and hustle & bustle then look somewhere else.
This is the absolute heaven for those liking for peace.
Surrounded by fabulous views, wildlife and starry skies this is a little piece of something very special.
Our welcome was wonderful with Sergio showing us around the property and explaining their ethos, before leading us to our suite (closer to a small house) The views are unreal, the silence is amazing, no traffic, no light pollution, no noise, you even end up speaking in whispers as it seems wrong not to.
The property has stunning grounds with some wonderful walks. The breakfast is amazing, all homemade.
The ability to blend top notch service with the feeling of being completely alone is a clever one and rarely done well. Here it is seamless.
Wonderful staff and wonderful surroundings.
We will be back and hopefully get the panoramic suite next time.
The pictures online and on their website do not do it justice in any way.

As a couple we decided to book five nights at this agrotourism hotel. It’s a small hotel with only a few suites but all marvelous, beautiful e comfortable.
We loved the quietness, really a very good quality of sleep. At this pandemic times and with all the restrictions, the staff did a very good job.
One thing we were delighted, was the fact that our suite was cleaned at the same time we were having breakfast, so attentive! Certainly one thing that made the difference.
They also recommended us some restaurants with takeaway and delivery and that was precious .
Only one thing to point negative, and that’s why it’s wasn’t 5 stars for us: the process of booking wasn’t adapted to this different times of Covid-19. I had to rearrange the days for our stay because of the change of government travel rules inside the country and we felt some difficulties, even after had paid the total amount ( another issue that we didn’t appreciate)
But at the end we managed to stay after new period rebooking
So, we certainly recommend this lovely place. The breakfast was perfect and we were presented with a nice relaxing view at the same time! Very kind staff there.

Our stay was amazing in every sense of the word. The Herdade is very beautiful, with some hikes to make, breathtaking views and (our daughters favorite) some farm animals to feed and meet.
The rooms are super clean, attentive to details and very comfortable.
The staff is amazing, very friendly, always available to help.
We loved our stay and want to go back !

Herdade do Amarelo is an amazing place, we had the most wonderful days there. Sérgio and all the staff is incredible, very friendly and helpful. We definitely recommend the full body massage and the experience of the suspended jacuzzi. The breakfast is very good, we definitely recommend staying in Herdade do Amarelo.

Absolute silence. Cosy rooms. Very good breakfast. You can walk miles around or do nothing (we did nothing...). You simply forget that the beaches are just a couple of minutes away.
A final word for the staff, so discreet and efficient. No buffet: you just order and wait at the table for the scrambled eggs and else.
Better than this is very hard to find.

No words for this place. It’s just a paradise. The environment, the peace, the staff, the rooms, everything is just perfect. Nothing else to add. Been there twice in the last 6 months, and we will be back for sure. The jacuzzi in the suites are just a perfect end of the day. The views all over the place are something unique, special. Amazing place. Full breakfast with pool and green views. Strongly recommended.

We arrived at 1.30 pm, having driven from Evora on our journey round Portugal, with great expectation having read the previous excellent reviews. Were therefore a bit surprised to be turned away when we found someone to checking with as we were not due til 3. She was a lovely young girl who tried her best with limited English but pointed to the time on our booking form n suggested we go to Milfontes. We were pleased to have even found Amarelo but did as she asked, a bit deflated. When we returned she showed us our room and the estate and was again as helpful as she could be. Turns out there was only one other couple staying, so not sure why we couldn't have at least put our things in our room earlier. We don't think we ever met the owners, I saw a lady in an Amarelo tshirt collect wine from a room by the pool when sunbathing later but she ignored me entirely tho girl brought me lemonade. No clear info in room about how to book spa, so didn't bother, Lovely as it looked. Again, she mentioned walks around estate but no info on these and no-one around to ask. Felt really disadvantaged. Good points:Breakfast was lovely, special mention of the homemade cake and jams! But again no one very friendly, except the same girl. Views of sunset and night sky fantastic. Rooms in Islamic style, gorgeous, with excellent shower and comfy beds. Worst thing was the hot tub on our balcony, should have been a relaxing treat but it was just a collection point for wildlife as it wasn't covered. No problem removing the many spiders, but the gecko and then the dormouse, were more difficult! Felt so sorry for them as the sides so steep and shiny they had no chance of getting out. (Managed with towel draped over the sides eventually as couldn't catch them). This is a stunning setting, beautiful rooms and breakfast but we felt unwelcome because of language barrier. At least have full info of walks, spa etc in info book if want to attract international guests. And being so particular about check in in a remote spot seems pernicity if room ready. Any other establishment would let you check in.

Started our trip here and what a great start it was. Remote location provided the ultimate relaxation experience. Small, intimate place. Room was great and the views from the glass balcony even better. No on-site restaurant for anything other than breakfast but that's okay because we found 2 gems in nearby towns only 10 minutes away that provided a true Portugese experience.

Let's start with the positives. The mountain views are amazing and the star gazing breathtaking. The immersion in the landscape is a sensory experience. It is private and very quiet. The staff is friendly. There has been a lot thought and effort put into making this an environmentally minded property. Well-equipped mini bar and free USB with a reasonable selection of movies was appreciated in helping to decompress after returning from day trips. The candles and lanterns in the rooms are lovely (bring matches or a lighter though, because they had forgotten to restock them).

And the areas for improvement...I found the bed incredibly uncomfortable. Hard as concrete and not king-sized. I agree with other reviewers that this is not a spa and that label is a misnomer. There is an area for a massage table and the technician travels from town. The breakfast was fine, however coffee weak and selections less comprehensive than at other sites. The checkout process is suspect - much of it done on paper and by the manager at an earlier time, things were missing and other things were added by mistake, it was a small feat for the staff to execute the math.

Other basic points and general remarks - I think it is important to understand the location and layout of this place. It is in a remote location and on a "farm." There is a small room that serves as the "front desk" and the hours are limited. Many of the rooms are at a distance from the main hotel complex, maybe only 50 yards, however, this is down gravel dimly lit paths, hence if you have trouble walking on unstable terrain or dragging your rollerboard suitcase or carrying luggage a distance, beware. Our room, which was one of three on one portion of the property, was simple and relatively small, one room, with a separate bathroom. Nice balcony. The bathtub depicted in the pictures is right smack in the middle of the floor at the foot of the bed and moderate in size (not big enough for two if you had that idea). Turning on the jets also spewed water all over the room. Most of the staff speaks limited English. There is a 15 euro per 30 minute charge to use the hot tub (and it was relatively cool). Our shower/bathroom was nice. No hair conditioner. No iron. In room safe is available. Less closet space than other places we stayed. WiFi worked. The TV channels were ridiculous including 100 bizarre international public television satellite selections. The drive into town for restaurants and shopping is 10-15 minutes down windy country roads but generally very easy access.

Response from HerdadedoAmarelo, Gerente de recepção at Herdade do Amarelo Nature & Spa
Responded 21 Oct 2016
Dear Guest, Thank you for your stay and for your review. We just want to comment some of the aspects that you pointed out, so that you and other people understand better the situation. The matches for the candels you just need to ask and we provide how many you want; the SPA may not be what people are used to but it is a SPA that has the jacuzzi (15€ for 1 hour and not 30 minutes), the turkish bath for the same price and the massages that are made by professionals (coming them or not from the town); the check-outs are prepared the previous day and the invoices are printed out so that the guests can check it, then if there is something that you say you didn't had and if there is something we have to add, we have to do it in the moment; the reception has a schedule but there is a 24hour service in case you need something; the 3 suites that are not in the main building have that explained wherever you make the reservation and it also includes a note about people with motor difficulties, so that people with that problems know it and do not chose it; the bathtubs in the suites need to be properly managed - to not have water everywhere you have to wait until it is in a certain level and only then you can accionate the program, just like we explain on the check-in; every suite and room have a hair dryer, a air conditioner and a safe and to use the iron you just need to ask; the TV's of the suites that you mention have more or less 800 channels so you chose what you want to see. Best Regards, Sara Figueiredo
