A group of us went to the black forest for a yoga retreat - the hotel was wonderful, cozy, clean and very modern. The food was very good - every meal in a beautiful cozy setting with fireplace. If anything it was almost too much food - we ordered 7 courses both nights - 3 courses would be enough for me anyway :-) The spa area was pretty and the spa services (massage, facials and foot reflexology) were excellent - ask for Ana Maria! It is set in the black forest so there was a nice hike of 1 hour to get to the beautiful village of Freudenstadt with nice stores and cafes to enjoy.

Situated in Lauterbad as a spa of the cozy town Freudenstadt, this hotel is ideally situated to explore both Schwarzwald and Schwäbische Alb. From here you can plan day excursions to Burg Hohenzollern, Schloss Lichtenstein, Schloss Sigmaringen, Beuron Archabbey, Schiltach and Baden-Baden or you can just stay at the hotel to relax and enjoy the wellness facilities. If you are more into sports, you can go walking, do Nordic walking or mountain biking or play golf. There are endless options. We stayed in a “Doppelzimmer Kat. E mit Vinylfussboden”. It is a spacious contemporary room with a modern bathroom, flat screen TV, mini-safe and a little refrigerator. The bed assures a good night sleep and everything is very clean. Since the room is on the ground floor, the sliding window gives access to the terrace from which you can enjoy the lovely garden. There is lots to choose from at breakfast with cold and warm options and the comb honey is just delicious! It is a nice touch that you can purchase this delicacy as a gift or just for one’s own use back home. Dinner is inspired by the French cuisine, very tasty and nicely presented. Especially the “Schlemmermenü” on Thursday is truly refined! They have an extensive wine list and I must say that they have some excellent German wines. If the weather allows, you can dine outside with lovely views over the meadows. We really enjoyed the nice touch and extra attention for my husband’s birthday. The nicely decorated table, the champagne and delicious chocolate cake for breakfast were truly appreciated! A special start for a special day! The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout. We had a lovely time and will definitely stay here again! Thank you Fam. Hoyer!

Nice hotel in a great surrounding. Slightly difficult if you are not good in German language as their capsity was limited, which might have made the feeling that you are a bit an outsider of the rest who where all German. Good food and the room was spacious a bit hot but otherwice nice.

We were recommended this Hotel by a friend as a base to visit the area. Initial thoughts were it was secluded but there was some traffic noise and occasionally a train could be heard. The room was large, bathroom with separate toilet. Décor was at odds with the building and room furnishings in our opinion. See photos. Staff excellent. We were offered a drink on arrival, choice of champagne, orange or water also a wet flannel to freshen up. Some spoke some English and we were able to have a chat and joke with them. Free bus / train pass for local area provided although we did not use them as we were on a driving holiday. The roads were really twisty very enjoyable.

very good rooms, very good restaurant… There are some rooms absolutely spectaculars. At the restaurant, for breakfast don't forget to ask for an omelet, they make it at the moment and my favorite is the one with "everything"

We stayed here on our way to Switzerland. A bit out of the way but compensated for by the beautiful scenery. Received a warm welcome on arrival and were given a large comfortable room with all facilities needed. Excellent pool and sauna. The meal was enjoyed by my companion but I found the menu a bit limited with a concentration on game. Breakfast was excellent. Whilst English is excellent at reception and the main areas, other staff had limited knowledge but were always helpful and smiling.

This is a very personal review, as i am disabled and small things have a greater impact on my quality of life than they would have were I my former, healthy, fit and robust self. Sometimes the simplest thing can be a major obstacle. I concede that someone else can have a wonderful time at The Gruener Wald and people obviously do. Before booking we read the reviews, therefore we requested to be housed in the new wing as this was supposed to be nicer. On arrival, very friendly receptionist, offered refreshments, nice touch I thought. Our room was in the original part of the house, large and spacious, somewhat rustic, but being in the country in keeping with local traditions. I didn't complain thinking it'll be ok. No air-con though! There were not enough pillows on the bed so we requested additional ones. When the housekeeper arrived my heart sank, they were way past their best, in human terms positively geriatric, hardly any feathers left inside. No products in the bathroom but large plastic soap containers screwed to the wall. The wifi in the room was non-existent, something which is a game changer for us as I meticulously make sure that the wifi is good enough. we did complain a couple of times, but to no avail. The bathroom has been refurbished within the last 5-7 years is relatively new but there is hardly anywhere to put your stuff. On our third morning at 6am we were woken up by a loud scraping coming from upstairs. It sounded like someone was pushing furniture along hardwood floors which lasted for over an hour. This shouldn't have been possible as the ground was covered in shagpile carpet. We informed reception and were told they had a word with the people upstairs. This was on the Friday morning. In the evening we were trying to sleep which was not possible as our room was directly over the bar part of the building. With the day having been near 30 c, the windows needed to stay open in order to be comfortable. Cars were parked in front and people were leaving, saying goodbye to their companions in loud voices. So reluctantly we shut ourselves in and spend a very uncomfortable and steamy night. On the positive side the next morning the scraping started an hour later and lasted hardly any time at all. The next day as you would imagine I related this tale to the owner, who I have to say is Is around a lot of the time and easily approachable. They did find us another room in the new wing. This was a bit of a revelation, rooms more up-to-date (see photo), the view magnificent. The pillows beautifully and soft filled with feathers. Our remaining stay in this new space stay was a paltry 2 days which I have to say I was very disappointed in as I felt cheated out of a relaxing time which we so badly needed. The breakfasts is very good and lots of staff are there to assist. The only exception is the coffee, if you like it strong than you are out of luck. We even asked for a strong coffee. The cheeses some were the best we have tasted, as many teas as you can think of and eggs prepared any way you like it. Most of the guests at this establishment stay on a full or half board basis which is not our cup of tea as we like to try different foods. Those guests have booked the nicest tables for their whole stay which then made us feel as if we were an inconvenience when we tried to reserve a table for the evening at the hotel. We ate at the restaurant some days. The portions are huge the, food well prepared with a modern twist even if slightly on the pricy side. The majority of staff are very friendly maybe some could be a bit more forthcoming and go the extra mile.
