Many people ask me why I have called the Guest House this name first of all it is my name and secondly but most important is that when the house was being modernized I promised myself that it would be called Marta's Guest House. In 1996 my husband and I with our young son Giorgio who at the time was two years old went on holiday to Indonesia. Strange as it may seem we found ourselves on a small island called Siladen on the Sulawesi Sea. The three of us had arrived there from a small port called Manado, on a small motor boat. Arriving there a charming women greeted us. We were so enthusiastic when we arrived there, seeing three small straw huts, with the beautiful clear calm sea and a coral reef and the fish arriving almost to the shore that we asked if we could stay a few days. The woman was very happy and showed us where we could sleep. Strange as it may seem her name was Marta and her rustic holiday resort was called Marta's Guest House.
The small huts were not very comfortable but they had a small balcony with a magnificent view onto the sea. We had no electricity, telephone or running water but it was one of the best holidays we ever had.
At night the sea and a small boat in the bay sparkled under the light of the moon...what a beautiful sight....
The bathroom was a small straw hut ...for a shower we had to use a bucket filled from an enormous water tank and throw it over ourselves, it was very hot so everything seemed fun. For our meals we could use Marta's kitchen with its simple old asian style stone coal cooker placed on the floor. I had to prepare baby food that my young son would like. The local women would help me smiling at how I prepared Giorgio's food that was so different from their traditional food.
I was so happy and it almost felt as if I was at home. Some girls would bring me bananas, pineapples and biscuits and Marta the owner would prepare us grilled fresh fish with plain rice that even Giorgio could eat. The children from the small local village intrigued at a new child, would come and play with Giorgio. They invited him to come to their small school of only one class, they gave him a present of a hand made wooden boat that we stil family would stop and chat to us with their and our broken English, with hand gestures and affection we all were able to understand and communicate with each other...
The departure from that beautiful place was very sad for us and them, all the small village came to the beach to say good bye to us also because we were the only foreigners.
The pleasant memories of that visit made us always hope that one day we would return there, but an unhappy surprise awaited us!!! One day while reading some tourist brochures I discovered that Marta's Guest House no longer exists and has been substituted by an enormous modern tourist complex with all the comforts and amenities that a tourist needs. We have travelled to all parts of the world, we usually choose holidays where we stay in small privately owned guest houses, this allows us to meet the local people and have a real taste of living in different parts of the world. We had already decided long before that we would have liked to open our very own guest house, promising ourselves that the simplicity of the warm welcoming that we were given , should be carried on by us and given to our guests. This is why I chose to call our house Marta's Guest House to remember the idyllic trip we spent together all those years ago.
Another reason for this name is the consequence of everything I have said beforehand.
Our house, which is not a straw hut, in fact some call it a villa which I do not like, I would like it to be a Guest House. So I want my guests to feel at home, feel the warmth, talk and stay with a welcoming family that treat you like an old friend.
What a whirlwind in a very positive way! This guest house is full of joy, serenity, peace and tranquillity. The house is truly quirky and every angle has something to look at with lots of character. Martha is the soul of the place. The place comes alight with her personality and a touch of pleasant music. It felt like staying with an Aunty. She gave us a lot of recommendations for restaurants, parking and spots to visit. An exemplary host! We had a comfortable stay and enjoyed the lovely terrace overlooking the hills, both during the day and night. See photos enclosed. We were blessed with a starry night and a beautiful moon despite a cloudy day earlier. The room was of good size and was impeccably clean. The shower was powerful with ample hot water. The breakfast was a delight with several home made pies, cakes and herby omelettes (frittata). She called the kitchen area where the magic takes place and it truly does! We just loved our stay and wished we stayed for more nights. And we still feel like dancing in the dining room to the lovely music....what an absolute joy! It is only 20 mins drive to Lucca or Pisa or Pisa airport, so it is excellently located to explore the area without being in a busy town. No hesitation to recommend highly and hopefully we shall return soon. 10 stars from us! …
We stayed Marta guest house for three nights in September. It was lovely experience. Marta is so kind and helpful. Our room and bathroom were clean and comfortable. The house was beautiful and huge garden is so lovely. Moreover especially the breakfast was so fantastic with homemade pastry, bread and jams everyday, best we have had in Italy. Really want to stay again!
We have just returned from 2 nights at Villa Marta after spending 8 nights in Umbria and what a lovely time we had and what a lovely lady Marta our host, who made us feel very welcome. Lovely traditional room immaculately clean, doors out to lovely big balcony with table chairs, sun lounger. Breakfast yummy, great coffee! best we had had. Marta was so helpful with parking info (either free or very cheap), both restaurants one local and one in Lucca which Marta recommended absolutely great. We had to leave quite early on last morning Marta provided us with an early breakfast and sandwiches to take with us. Thank you, wish we could have stayed longer hope to return and would definitely recommend.
This bed and breakfast is located about ten minutes from Lucca. It is a beautiful, historic property and has parking and a stunning garden. The proprietor is friendly and kind and happy to help you plan your visit. She offers an incredible breakfast and makes you feel right at home. If you want to visit Lucca but stay away from the crowds, this lovely, peaceful property is a true gem!
We stayed there for a long weekend and had an amazing experience. Marta and her son are great hosts and the villa is beautiful. On arrival we were offered a room upgrade, for a more than reasonable price, so we could enjoy a shared balcony. The room, tastefully decorated with a hint of mint green, is quite spacious and has a very comfortable king sized bed. There is plenty of room to put away your belongings and a lovely ceiling painting to gauge at. The bathroom is functional and there were plenty of towels. Also, the room had been cleaned when we would return at the end of the day. As expected of an older house,it can be a bit noisy but this did not bother us much. The above is well worth the stay, but it is Marta's and Giorgio's hospitality that stayed with us the most. When we had to leave early for Florence the next morning, Marta prepared a (huge) breakfast at 7:30 just for us. She took her time to help us out with finding a good parking spot and even made us a snack for the road! Amazingly, the regular breakfasts (8:30-10:00) are even grander with homemade jams and cakes, and good coffee. Marta would also share her knowledge of the province with her guests on a huge road map, which brought us to some amazing sites. I would definitely recommend Marta's Guesthouse. Thank you for an amazing stay!…
We have travelled extensively in many countries and rate Marta’s at the top. The location is perfect for sightseeing in Pisa, Lucca and north up to Barga. The home is very well appointed with amazing art work on the ceilings and walls. Breakfast was delightful and filling. Marta and her son, Giorgio, we’re very helpful in recommending restaurants and parking in the cities. Marta has travelled in many countries and is comfortable speaking English. The home and gardens are immaculate and provide a peaceful respite at the end of the day.
Marta's Guest House is a few kilometers outside of Lucca in a very quiet neighborhood, built in the thirties and and absolutely charming. And Marta is the ultimate host, fluent in English and serving an unbelievable breakfast. A must if you plan a trip in the Lucca / Pisa area.
Marta was fabulous. She could not be more helpful. We were vegetarians and she catered above and beyond for us. Gave great advice of places to visit and I must say the Breakfast was far better than the fancy Hotel in Pisa. Worth going just to enjoy the breakfast in her garden.
"This place was fantastic, a bit out of the way and not too easy to find but it was so worth it. Staff and owners were so friendly and kind, the beds are the best I’ve slept in, so comfy. Really want to stay here again!"
Me, my wife and our newly 3 year old daughter spent almost two weeks there and absolutely loved it. Marta's is family owned and you will really appreciate how Marta's is run with care and love. The property is in the suburbs of Lucca Italy and enjoys the benefits of being tucked into the hills with an evening breeze and crisp air. Marta's prepares a lovely breakfast for you and is happy to arrange to prepare something for you later in the day if you want to stay in or refer you to something in the area, that you will love. I really enjoyed the variety of local fair at breakfast and of course, a lovely cup of coffee. The staff are full of rich local knowledge and should be consulted about whatever plans you might have as they will have some priceless bit of wisdom to share with you which will inevitably enrich your experience. The property itself is in excellent condition, the amenities are as described and the local burb Marta's is located in is warm and inviting. Don't hesitate to walk down the street in the late evening for a slice of pizza or some pasta. Marta's is great for a couple looking to get away for a weekend or a week, families should ask about the guest house. I am already looking at when we can come back.…
