Detailed Reviews
We chose to stay at the Douglas for one night on our way to the Highlands Fishing holiday - It seemed perfectly situated for a stop over and good value for money. On our arrival it was obvious that this family run hotel was a true winner. Everyone we met was very kind, helpful and welcoming. We enquired about the local river and it wasn't long before Jason had expressed his interest in fishing and offered to show us the river.... Need I say more! Overall it was great to find this little gem and we will definitely book again (for a couple on nights so we can explore the area further). Regards, Russell & Mark - Salmon Fishermen.

I stayed here for a few days while I was visiting family who stay in the town, and some are further from the borders.
Had a fantastic courtesy call 48hrs before I arrived, asking if I had a preference to a room type (double or twin) and if I would have an ETA. Explained I would be travelling from South Wales, so aimed to be there around lunchtime. It was also explained that, on the evening I arrived the kitchen would be closed for dinner, but I could be booked into another venue within a 2-min walk of their property.
When I checked in I was greeted by whom I assume is the owner, shown to my room and given the keys.
The room was immaculate, even though I booked without breakfast, there were individual porridge portions and breakfast cereal bars left in my room, I happened to bump into a member of staff on my first morning, who offered to service my room. However I politely declined.
I did pop into the bar area one evening, to find it relatively busy with local Langholm folk playing pool, I was made to feel extremely welcome, by the young boy working the bar & also by the locals.
During my whole stay, I cannot find anything to complain about. Having worked in hospitality for double figures of years, I have never come across such fantastic hospitality and customer service! I would highly recommend staying at The Douglas.

Our finale stay in Scotland on our charity run from john o grouts to lands end , after staying in 15 places in Scotland the Douglas hotel knocked it out of the park and in my opinion the best of the bunch!!!! The customer service was outstanding and every need was catered for , the hotel was warm and friendly. Our evening meal and breakfast was 5 stars , my partner is vegan and gluten free and every effort was made to accommodate her. Thanks to all the staff definitely would stay here in the future🙂

Booked in for an overnight stay to break the journey ,Friendly staff. Our double room was clean and well appointed. Quick drink in the bar area and to the Restuarant for an Evening meal. There was a reasonable selection of starters and main courses. We had Lasagne and the House Burger no complaints with either. Restricted breakfast options due to the covid restrictions. We were offered a Bacon or a Sausage sandwich brought to our room which was excellent Price wise the Douglas was better value then the other local Hotel. We will definitely stop again when in the area.

My husband and I arrived for a 4 night stay along with our 4 young children aged five to eleven. On arrival we were met by Rob the owner who couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. The two rooms we had were clean, comfortable and quiet. My husband had a cooked breakfast every morning which was delicious and the owners were very accommodating with breakfast for myself and our children, offering a good selection of cereal, yogurt, fruit and bread/toast.
Rob and his brother Jason seemed to have a genuine interest in how our holiday was going and were full of helpful advice on things to do and see.
We ate our evening meal at the hotel twice - the food was excellent and all the staff were very friendly. We used Langholm as a base to explore Gretna Green, Hadrians Wall, Edinburgh and the Lake District.
I couldn't recommend the Douglas Hotel highly enough and we would happily stay there again.
PS., there is a lovely new play park 5 minutes walk from the hotel.

We ate in the hotels restaurant recently, while staying in Langholm. It was the only place we could get food on a Sunday evening, but we were so pleased we called in. Plenty of choice on the basic menu an also quite an extensive specials menu - we had the Balmoral chicken which was fabulously yummy.
Staff very friendly, food served without too much of a wait and the whole evening was lovely and relaxed. Prices very reasonable too.

We were greeted with a very warm welcome by Rob, one of the owners of this very friendly, family run, hotel.
Our room was really lovely in the attic of the building. Very clean and well decorated room (room 2) with superb bedding and towels. You have to watch your head in places if you are tall, or clumsy, but it was such a nice room it's worth the chance of the odd bump! We both slept very soundly.
We had the option of a breakfast but there was a pot of porridge in the room and that was more than enough. If the quality of the room was anything to go by, then I'm sure that the breakfast would have been very good.
We managed to park our motorbike opposite the hotel, which was really handy.
The owners are extremely relaxed and easy going and we enjoyed chatting with them. Unfortunately, small hotels like this are struggling in the current economic climate and I hope that they weather the storm.
It is definitely a hotel I recommend and hope to stay here again on another Scotland motorbike tour.

We stayed here as a family group and couldn’t have been more satisfied. All the rooms had comfortable beds and were beautifully clean. Where the hotel excelled was in the level of service - nothing was too much trouble. Some of the younger members of our party didn’t make breakfast so the owner offered to make them up some Scottish rolls so that they didn’t mis out. These were much appreciated.

Dont attempt to visit the bar if you are a woman alone. We called in, went into the back yard which is laughingly described as a beer garden, more like a back yard, concrete, not a plant in sight. Oh well, never mind, wanted a drink and a snack, so I went into the small bar. No staff in sight and the 4 or 5 local men in the bar made it clear that, I, as a middle aged woman, shouldnt be allowed in a bar, shock horror, by myself. No one spoke to me, not even to say someone would be around soon, I was, frankly, stared at, as if they had never seen a woman out by herself (I wasnt, I did have a husband sat outside, you know), so we walked out, no one came to see what we wanted at all. For the first time, in many years, I actually felt worried for my safety, thank goodness I am no longer a slip of a girl!!! I havent felt like this since the 1970's. Should I point out that we women have had the vote for 100 years, we dont have to sit in the kitchen any more. May have been different if we had been stopping in the hotel. I have to say, the residents lounge looked nice, but the actual bar, no way.

Response from Rob Brockley, General Manager at The Douglas Hotel
Responded 6 Jun 2023
Hello , I am sorry you had a bad experience at this hotel, I dont think this was the Douglas hotel in Langholm. Our bar is open Thursday to Sunday and is staffed at all times. We ensure all guests recieve a warm welcome, our walled beer garden is decked -and is grannys pride and joy- with several plants and rare trees in it , also, we dont have a residents lounge! i dont think this description of facilities tallys with ours at the Douglas ???

A wonderful one night spent here. Room was clean with lovely fluffy white towels and comfy bed. The food was amazing and we spent the night in the bar with the locals who were very friendly and chatted away to us while they were playing pool. I would have no hesitation in returning if I am in the area even it is just for food.
