My son and I stayed here for three days and three nights and it was absolutely excellent. The couple who own the Petit Hotel Schanze, Toshiko and Tetsuya treated us with the best of care. Aside from driving us to the ski shop for rentals and to the gondola station, organizing taxis and giving advice on local activities and restaurants, they noticed little things and tweaked their service to accommodate us. For example, my son does not like eating tomatoes. The next day, his salad had strawberries instead. A lovely touch and really impressed both of us. Speaking of food, we ate at the hotel two of the nights we stayed there. The food was excellent. I would highly recommend having the dinner there at least once during a stay. Tetsuya does the cooking and integrates local produce and ingredients into the meals. We had spiced up gamecock, salted and grilled yellowtail, local veggies, japanese pickles, locally made cheese and home made raspberry ice cream. The room had three beds and a futon and could have slept 4, but it may be a bit tight by western standards. It was clean and the beds were comfortable. The ensuite bath was a little bit small, but they had a Japanese bath on the third floor open for any guest to use. It was perfect for sore muscles. Free wi-fi, of course. Highly recommended and one could not hope for a sweeter couple (and experienced as they've been in business for 38 years) to help you enjoy your mountain vacation.

My husband and I stayed here in January for part of our honeymoon. It felt like we were staying with family, the owners Toshiko and Tetsuya are so sweet and caring. Going so far as to give us rides to the the lift even though it’s a very short walk. The meals they cook are absolutely delicious with much of what they make being home grown or locally sourced. They even made me amazing gluten free bread! They made our trip extra special, we would definitely stay there again. I can’t recommend them enough.

Had a great stay here for a week in late February. Toshiko and Tetsuya are wonderful. Truly helpful and friendly. Toshiko speaks excellent English and Tetsuya is a master chef, and they both made me feel very welcomed and at home, going above and beyond to help with things like mailing a post card. They both are extremely good at what they do, and clearly enjoy doing it. Breakfast was a highlight of the day, every day something different and delicious. Dinner is equally impressive. Hotel location is actually ideal, 3 minute walk to Tsugaike gondola and bus stop area, in a more quiet spot with panoramic views. Facilities were clean, including the indoor onsen (so relaxing!) Overall a great central location in the Hakuba Valley. An excellent value for the price. I will most definitely be back. Thanks again!

Place is simple but warm. Dinner is at 6.30pm and there’s no set menu. It’s omakase which means it up to the chef to cook and serve you. After dining there for 5 nights apparently many guest I met return simple because they enjoyed the hospitality and the Omakase. Seriously this is a hidden gem @ Hakuba.

Two dads with their sons stayed 3 nights and we felt like we were living in someones home. We felt so welcome and the Husband and Wife (Toshiko and Tetsuya san) running the hotel were so lovely. The rooms were cosy, nice and warm and the in-house Onsen (artificial) made it easy to chill and relax without leavening the hotel. Another bonus was the food!!! They have a highly recommended set dinner at starting 18:30 that you can sign up for in the morning. We had each dish explained to us, where it came from and how it was grown locally or in their back yard and they tasted delicious. The breakfast was awesome, the wonderfully prepared dishes just kept coming and they made adjustments to my gluten free request with awesome alternatives. If you need they will drive you to the local ski rental shop and you are able to store all the gear in their heated drying room. I will stay here again? 100% for sure!!!
