Resting at the base of Hakuba Happo-one ski area, Shirouma-so is a modern Japanese ryokan (inn) combining both traditional wood and modern Japanese "Wa" architectural styles, resulting in a creative and beautiful design. From the entrance featuring wooden pillars and beams preserved from the building's agricultural beginnings in the Edo period, to rooms with large windows and views of the northern Alps, you can relax, place yourself in the hands of Nature, and refresh yourself in the warmth of this historical ryokan. Shiroumaso is appreciated by many guests as a convenient base for skiing, snowboarding, or the numerous outdoor activities of the summer months, as well as a hub for touring Shinshu, Azumino, and other regions within Nagano.

We are beyond happy to have chosen a ryokan, specifically SHIROUMA-SO, to stay. We were lucky to have a glimpse into the Japanese tradition of living and working. The owner family gave us an experience that we could never get at a corporate-owned hotel. The ryokan must have been built over half a century ago, yet it is so clean. No dust anywhere in the room. No mold on the grout lines in the bathrooms. Toilets have heated seat. The labor that went into preparing the meals is just plain impressive.

Have stayed here several times years apart and am always amazed at the dedication and services offered by Toshi-san and those that work here, everything is spotless and in order, Onsen is amazing. Breakfast is Japanese style with a few western touches and is out of this world and it shows just how much they care, I would also recommend eating dinner here at lest once you won’t regret it Thank you for another amazing stay Dave

I can not more highly recommend Shirouma So! The staff were very accommodating and friendly. The hotel was very comfortable and perfectly situated near the bus terminal, Happo One, and restaurants. The onsen was the perfect way to finish a day on the slopes. The food was excellent and there was plenty of variety - while breakfast is set, it is different every day. I would definitely stay here again!

We were a group of 4 guys, stayed for two nights and in two rooms in hiking season in late Aug when the whole area was almost closed. Shirouma-So as a family hotel provided excellent personal service. Dinner was really surprisingly great experience. Had a great opportunity to chat with the owner lady and her son who took very good care of us all the time. The futon beds in Japanese style rooms were prepared for us during the day. The onsen provided nice relaxation. We got very enjoyable memories from Shirouma-So!

This family-owned and run ryoken is a fantastic place to stay in. The staff went above and beyond to help us and make sure we were well covered. The food was also amazing. I'd like to go back to Hakuba during ski season and will try to stay at this place again.

The ryokan is walking distance from the Happo bus terminal while the free shuttle to Adam gondola (HappoOne resort) stops just outside the building next door. Besides having all the great facilities (nice room/in-house onsen/storage for ski equipment etc), it was the owner (whole family) who made our stay perfect with their superb hospitality and friendliness. Chef even cooked us different breakfast on different days. Arigato gozaimasu!

One of the nicest places I have stayed at and one of the nicest staff ever. Family run ryokan with superb breakfast and dining. Private onsen is outstanding. Transport is offered for everything in the valley.

A really nice Ryokan. The traditional rooms are a good size and have good storage for luggage. The onsen is great, the hot-spring water perfect after a day on the snow. Breakfast is traditional and filling. The dinner was good too (book in advance as it can be popular). Good ski storage and drying room. The hotel offers really cheap 1 or 2 day passes for Happo (about 3500 yen for two days). Very close (200m) to the information centre (and therefore the shuttle to the other Hakuba resorts). Access to the Happo slopes is a little painful - either a 200 metre walk to the Nakiyama slope or shuttle bus (50m walk to the 'Mount' stop) for access to the Gondola or other Happo slopes. The buses would be great except they are not fitted out for a snow resort (no racks outside for skis/boards) and there aren't enough at peak times. The village needs a proper shuttle system.

Warm and friendly service. Rooms were clean and cozy. Public onzens were a delight after a full day out in the snow. Great location, within easy walking distance to the Happone gondola, bus terminal and restaurants in the area. Also, do not miss out on their Kaiseki dinner which needs to be booked one day in advance.
