Short and sweet, without doubt if you have a family this is the place to stay in the whole valley. Top 5 star rooms, restaurant to die for! Have stayed here many times and have reviewed many other places in HAKUBA, nothing comes as close. Welcoming log fire, architect designed building for the Nagano Olympics, incredible location. Great for large groups who want the best of the best!

After a few nights in Tokyo, we headed out to Hakuba for the snow. Whilst we weren't blessed with the best snow, Aqua Alpine served as the perfect base. Staff were really nice and extremely helpful. Always happy to drop us up to the slopes, or wherever we needed to go. And always had good recommendations for food and things to do. Rooms were comfortable, western style beds. Amenities include a small onsen, and western style restaurant.

The only reason I have given one star above is for the wonderful staff, the young men and women were enormously friendly and helpful where possible. However the 'Owner' - Josh is a completely different story; not acknowledging us as we walked numerous times through the reception area, avoiding eye contact at all times and rude to the staff in our presence. We were 2 couples staying in the Hakuba cottage for one week (we left early). Besides needing extensive cleaning and updating, the furnishings were poor and insufficient for 4 people (one 2 seater couch + one ottoman + camping chairs). The counter stools were unsafe to sit on. The dryer didn't work and the cottage had a 'daily service' every 2nd to 3rd day.. the sheets changed only on request. The kitchen amenities required washing before use and were severely lacking - 2 wine glasses, 3 forks.. everything mismatched. We tried calling reception, but the cottage line didn't work and we were told that they had all been disconnected. The entry foyer has a ski rack and wood heap as you walk in and the outdoor tiled areas were dirty. The breakfast was the worst I've experienced. I don't know how this place has more than a 2/3 star rating. It just needs some care and attention.

Just had a wonderful stay at Aqua Alpine in one of their cottages. A real log cabin in the snow, which was perfect for our family of five. The staff were attentive and helpful, the atmosphere cozy and welcoming. The staff can drop you at the slopes or ski hire and have many suggestions for places to eat. Highly recommend the local Onsen as well.

We wanted to see snow for the first time and we got that, snowed for the first three days we were there. Aqua Alpine is a tidy enough stay but found that we had to do a lot of walking on slippery ice roads to get around. Restaurant wasn’t nothing flash with basis food and I thought breakfast was average at best. Staff were more than willing to drop you at the slops or at tour pickups. More than helpful. Good break from the Japanese food and drink and more of an Australian theme with food and drink.

We are a family from Brisbane who didn’t want to ski but we wanted to make sure we had a snow exprience...so Hakuba was on our to do list in Japan. From the very start when booking at Aqua Alpine they were extremely helpful in organising a Snow Monkey tour dinner suggestions and reservations, pick up and drop off at the bus stop and all round great service. We had a cabin over the road from the main lodge so each day was an adventure in the snow to eat breakfast. A log fire warmed us up very quickly and we were able to do laundry as well. Hope to be back again..to not ski

This was our second visit to Aqua Alpine and won't be our last. For a family with no Japanese language skills this hotel is the best. The staff are all super helpful with everything from lift passes, transfers and booking restuarants. The kids room is great and the bar and fireplace area are magnificent. Highly recommended!

We chose Aqua because I am coeliac. I read a tripadvisor review over a year ago which mentioned that Aqua was accommodating in providing gluten free food. After having been hungry in Japan before, this was the deciding factor for us! We travelled in January 2019 as a group of two families. Two people were at Aqua for two weeks, the rest of us for eight nights. We were in four different rooms. The location of the hotel is good. It is a short walk to the closest lift at Goryu but it is up a hill (but down hill on the way home!). We used the hotel shuttle to the lift in the mornings and home again in the afternoons. We also used the hotel’s Friday shuttle to Cortina – a much quicker alternative than the public shuttle. It is a short walk to a variety of other restaurants and bars, both Western and Japanese. The staff make this hotel. They are very helpful and friendly. Once introduced, they knew our names and this felt very welcoming. They answered all our questions and were able to provide lots of information about the Hakuba resort. One day I was quite sick and asked Hayden to call me a taxi so that I could go to a chemist for medication. Hayden gave up some of his free time to spend nearly an hour driving me to two chemists in search of medication. Thank you, Hayden, much appreciated! I have to thank the two chefs, Randy and Junya, for ensuring I had delicious, gluten free meals. There was gluten free toast available each morning and one morning Randy made me gluten free French toast! Other mornings gluten free berry muffins or gluten free banana bread were available – truly delicious! Given how difficult it is to be coeliac in Japan, I ate dinner at the hotel every night. At first, it seemed a little repetitive – alternate meals of steak and salmon (delicious nonetheless). But Randy and Junya went above and beyond to mix it up a little for me and cooked gluten free pasta for me on two evenings (with Italian meatballs one night and with a creamy salmon sauce another night) as well as a lettuce-wrapped hamburger. I know the extra time and effort gluten free food requires and I am very appreciative of their gluten free meals, thank you so very much! As for hotel facilities, we didn’t use the onsen but we did use the laundry room – very handy. You pay 100 yen at the front desk for laundry powder. There are two washing machines and dryers to use for free. There’s a games room, we played pool a couple times. And in the bar we used the chess set a few times and also enjoyed hearing the occasional guest play the piano there. There’s also a lovely fireplace to sit in front of. I do agree with a previous reviewer – if you are after upmarket accommodation then, despite the website claim to “luxurious accommodation”, you might want to do some further research. The foyer, bar and dining room are just lovely – look at the photos on the internet. But the downstairs hallways (where our rooms were) and rooms are tired. They need updating and refurbishment. The hallway wallpaper is peeling and stained with black in some areas, hallway carpets are stained, some room furniture needs replacing as does the tatami. However, the beds are very comfortable and the rooms are kept clean. The aircon (heating) was not working when we arrived and did not work for our entire visit. But we were given heaters (oil heater in one room, bar heater and blow heaters in the other rooms) on arrival which kept the rooms warm. Some reviewers mention the “quirky” step up and over into the bathroom. There is a reason for this – a traditional Japanese bathroom is more like a wet room. This step keeps the water inside the bathroom. Aqua is a very Australian environment. Most staff are Australian, the food is Western and the rooms (even the tatami rooms) are Western. I think many guests at the hotel wanted this. However, if you are after a traditional Japanese hotel and a very Japanese experience, look elsewhere. In summary, we very much enjoyed our stay at Aqua. The staff are friendly and helpful, the food is delicious (especially the gluten free food) and we felt very looked after.

Three families (six adults and six children) were accommodated within three rooms of this hotel for around nine days. Rooms were spacious, very clean and the bedding comfortable. All staff were very friendly and obliging ... they went out of their way to ensure all members of our party were comfortable and they addressed any queries as they arose. Having the capacity to transport guests (and gear) around the immediate area was an added bonus. It was appreciated too that the co-owner/proprietor (Josh) managed to remember every guest's christian name after an initial meeting ... this hotel emanates a warm and friendly vibe.
