Our stay at the Funny Inn has been nothing short of amazing. The hosts are extremely kind and helpful and put in their best effort to make sure you enjoy your time at not only their Inn but also in Hakuba, providing discounted ski passes, insider knowledge on site seeing and activities and personalised breakfast every morning (I’d recommend). Would 100% come back to stay with them again!

Dear 166 haydens. I appreciate your fantastic review. We will make every effort to provide a menu that is easy to eat for our customers as a breakfast with variations every day. This winter season's Hakuba were not enough snow so I hope to see you and your friend again in a lot of snow . Best regards Hide and Mayumi

Don't let the funny name put you off; Pension Funnyinn is a great place to stay if you're in Hakuba. Just off the main road, it's only a 5 min walk to Echoland main strip. Mayumi-san and her husband (who trained at a French restaurant in a Kobe Hotel) will take excellent care of you. Breakfast is included in the price of the room, and the French Toast is among the best you'll ever eat. If you're only staying one night, be sure to request for the French Toast.

You can also request the degustation menu at dinner time for approx 4000 JPY per person, and it is well worth the cost. The pork medallions made from Hakuba Pork and wrapped in bacon were beautifully tender and juicy, while the seared Maguro was cooked to perfection.

5 stars for food.

We spent 8 nights in Hakuba just at the start of the season and can't recommend Funny Inn enough. As a family of 5, travelling with kid and teens, we usually prefer staying in a self-contained apartment/chalet, where we could hang out as a family in the living room. However, there are very few of such accommodation in Hakuba (compared to Niseko), and were either fully booked or out of our budget. So we took a chance with Funny Inn and we loved it!

Mayumi-san and Hide-san are such lovely people, who work very hard to provide their guests with a very comfortable stay and Hide-san is such a talented chef, his cooking is to die for!
From reading previous TripAdvisor reviews, we knew the breakfasts were going to be good, but we were not expecting it to be that good! My teens LOVED the breakfast and we all had our favourites, be it the French Toast, Egg Benedict, Pancakes. We tried both the 3 course dinner and the 5 course dinner, and they were both fantastic! Hide-san puts a lot of effort and care into the preparation of his meals and this is evident in this cooking. The half-seared tuna, was so good, we would go back just to eat it. Both the 3 course and 5 course meals are very good value, and on Christmas Eve, Hide-san made a very nice, chocolate, mango cream log cake that was too beautiful to eat.

We were also pleasantly surprised with how close Funny Inn was to the nearest bus-stop, the Alpine Chalet. Carrying skis and poles, and wearing boots, it was an easy 2min walk. There are several restaurants within a 10min walk and a 15min walk to the biggest supermarket in town. Both the rooms we stayed in were very clean and comfortable and provided enough space for our luggage.
Everyone in our family enjoyed ourselves very much and we would love to go back to Hakuba and stay in Funny Inn again. Thank you, Mayumi-san and Hide-san for your wonderful hospitality!

I appreciate your so fantastic review. It passed one month since you left Funny inn, but I remembered your nice family very well. Especially Hide thanked for X'mas Eve dinner. He cooked special ''bush de noel '' only in a few days around X'mas week , so he's very happy to see your family were pleased with special cakes . Inever forget to see your smile at every breakfast time . Tuna dish is the fisherman's style of The Mediterranean Sea.Hide use Ishiru sauce(fish sauce) as secret ingredient.Almost Japanese guests love it. While you were staying , every day you enjoyed skiing , so your skiing skill became better I guess. We look forward to seeing your family and Hide'd like to ski with you. Great regards Mayumi Funny inn

My partner and I stayed at the Funny Inn for three nights in a Japanese room. The room was nice and big and the futon bedding comfortable. The property itself is very homely, clean and well presented. The on-site onsens are a fantastic feature as well. Mayumi and her husband were excellent hosts and nothing was too much trouble for them. They even arranged for our skis to be sent to Narita Airport for collection on our departure from Japan - saved us a lot of bother travelling back to Tokyo! We had a fantastic stay and we hope to return next year.

Our group of 8 had a wonderful 5 nights stay at Funny Inn. We were welcomed with soft powder snow when we arrived and experienced 4 days of great skiing! It was a treat to soak in the inn's hot bath after a day of skiing. Mayumi and Hide were fantastic hosts, catering to our every need, and not forgetting Hide's delicious breakfasts and 3 course dinners he prepared for the whole group! The cosy inn felt like home and our hosts became friends by the end of our stay there. We would definitely go back there again!

Hide-san and Mayumi-san extended so much warmth and sincerity in welcoming us during our Summer 8N stay at Funny Inn from 8th-16 July 2015. Staying at their inn was an excellent choice and we fully agree with fellow tripadvisors who gave glowing reviews of this small cozy pension.

I think a few establishments in Hakuba are now foreigner owned. So it came as a great relief to find that this accommodation is still run by a true blue japanese couple.

Having travelled to Europe, Asia Pacific and Asia, we have come to truly appreciate the japanese hospitality (omotenashi) which surpasses our expectations in terms of service, kindness, courtesy and helpfulness. So we hope Hide and Mayumi will still be managing this pension for many many more years to come.

Mayumi works hard to keep the place very clean, tending to her flowers, serving breakfast and dinner whilst her husband does the cooking. They are ever ready to assist us in our enquiries, making suggestions as they take a genuine interest in their guests plans for the day.

BREAKFAST AND DINNER
The dining setting is humble and simple - with nice views of the mts on a clear day. Light music adds a quiet pleasant romantic touch to the evening.

As for the meals... Words alone are not enough to experience the delightful dinners and breakfasts chef Hide prepared. We had dinner at the inn 6 out of 8 nights, and every meal was a gastronomic experience and surprise. We had the chance to taste his special pork, Nagano beef, special Shinshu salmon, pork rib, seared tuna.

A different 3 Course dinner for each night and we wiped our plates clean after every meal as it was totemo oiishi des!! Guests who appreciate fine dining will enjoy Hide's meals at Funny Inn.

The selection of good quality French Red or white wine was excellent and complimented the meals beautifully. Reasonably priced at around ¥4,300 per bottle.

For my birthday dinner, he prepared a generous slice of foie gras and liver pate with a side of crunchy greens drizzled with a tangy sauce that created a perfect balance and contrast in taste.

For the main, we had such succulent tender slices of goose meat on a bed of caramelized zucchini together with ginger and I think orange sauce over it and a side of fine mashed potatoes. Never tasted such delicious goose prepared in this manner. Absolutely divine!

The melt in our mouth birthday cake had blueberries as well as fruit compote made up prune, plum and perhaps apricot topped with light fresh cream and a chocolate heart greeting. The taste is light and refined without being too sweet. As always, a nice cup of coffee gave a perfect ending to the meal. Photos will be posted in this review.

The french meals are infused with chef Hide's personal touch and he has an amazing ability to balance out the various flavors. Not too rich, neither too salty nor too sweet, it was a perfect balance and harmony of tastes.

He is very passionate about his cooking and once the food comes in contact with our taste buds, it's total bliss throughout.

As a musician, I can express it this way: experiencing the whole symphony making beautiful music together and yet able to hear the different instruments at the same time.

Hide blends and balances everything with such skill, allowing us to taste the individual ingredients in the food as well as appreciating everything in total harmony.

All expertly done by the maestro Chef Hide :):):)

ROOM:
We chose (201) and found it very comfortable, spacious and clean. It didnt look out to the mountains, however we liked the many little windows which let in a great deal of fresh air and daylight - nice and bright. One does need to draw the curtains when changing.

Although we did have a bathroom in the room, most of the time we used their public bath downstairs which was very clean. It is spacious enough for 2 persons with an indoor and outdoor tub. Not natural hotspring water, but good enough for a nice warm soak after a long day. The outdoor cypress tub has a small view of the mts.

Bring your own toiletries as only liquid body soap and hair shampoo is provided.

GETTING AROUND
TIP: do bring more cash when traveling in Hakuba. We didnt have a car and had to rely on the summer buses (only cash for the bus pass). which is fairly convenient. However, it's important to plan your schedule to ensure you dont get stranded after the last bus leaves esp from places that are further away.

During our stay, we were blessed with 6days of blue skies and sunshine - so we had a great time outdoors and did lots of walking. Our purpose in coming to Hakuba was to walk and "exercise" enjoy the fresh air and lovely views.

As most of the walks are unsheltered, do use sunblock, shades and even a sunhat on a hot sunny day. The ultra violet rays can be pretty strong both on the ground and esp up on the mt.

The walking times below are for a comfortable moderately leisurely stroll. To appreciate the scenery and time for some photo taking, you will need to add an extra 10mins or so.

Funny Inn (one way & unsheltered):
*12-15 mins walk to the nearest bus stop "Mizuho Lawson" to catch the summer bus.

*12min walk to a very good Soba restaurant "ZEN" recommended by Mayumi (its before the Mizuho bus stop, on the opp side). We enjoyed the tempura, grilled calamari, eggplant onion green pepper in missing, cucumbers in plum sauce and of course hot & cold soba. The Asahi draft is very fresh and well chilled. Credit card accepted. Closed Wed.

*12mins to Echoland for more eateries (we didnt try).

*25 min walk to the Happo Information Centre (also the bus terminal). You can take the bus from the "Mizuho" bus stop but we chose to walk there.

*To Ski Jump - 40-45 mins (no bus stop). Take note that the chairlift at the ski jump has no handle bars, so try to be handsfree when you visit or else use a sling bag.

*To Happo Gondola station - Hide-san was kind enough to drop us there. We decided to walk back and it took us around about 45-50mins back to the inn. Remember to check the schedule if you intend to take the bus. The summer bus stops at the "Gondola stop"

JR Hakuba station is about 10mins by car. Hide-san picked us up.

Hakuba gives you a chance to take in the views on the numerous chairlifts, gondolas (cablecar) and ropeway which go up pretty high up. It's so green in summer and during the week we arrived, there were no crowds or queues.

After a long fruitful day of sightseeing and walking, coming back to Pension Funny Inn was like coming back to our summer "home".

In addition, our evenings were filled with gleeful anticipation as we looked forward to Chef Hide's 3 Course dinners. Yummy yummy for our tummies :):)

So once again, a big thank you dear Hide and Mayumi-san for making our holiday such a comfortable and memorable one. May you be blessed with good health, love, peace and all the success you both deserve.

We stayed at the Funny Inn 7 nights with another couple and booked rooms 205 & 207 (both have private onsens). The rooms were very comfortable - had a great night sleep every night. Having your own private onsen was a bonus! We felt very spoilt staying here, Mayumi and Hide were wonderful hosts. They were willing to help us with anything including organising Ski Hire; Ski/Lift Passes; Booking restaurants etc. They also helped out with transport when available. We had cooked breakfasts every morning and what a treat to have something different every morning. We also arranged to have dinner one night and it was so delicious! Hide is an amazing Chef! The location is perfect, short walk to the bus stop for the ski fields and a 5min walk to town.
Would highly recommend the Funny Inn to anyone travelling to the area. We hope to me back again one day soon. Katy & Mike.

My husband and I had an absolutely wonderful experience with Mayumi and Hide at the Funny Inn. The breakfasts were delicious and we savored our 5 course dinner- Hide is an incredibly talented chef. Both Mayumi and Hide went above and beyond to help us find our way through town, get lift tickets, and arrange reservations at restaurants or transportation if needed. The location is great, short walking distance to many restaurants and right at the bus stop to the ski resorts. Most importantly, we were happy and comfortable at the Funny Inn and hope to someday return.

The Funny Inn is a great place to stay in Hakuba. Located in Echoland, the bus to the ski fields is a two minute walk from the Pension and the restaurants at Echoland are a five minute walk.
The accommodation is super clean, we were in room 205 which has a great Japanese bath - great to use in the morning to warm up your legs and after a day of skiing to relax. The food is really tasty. The owners are lovely and incredibly helpful. We had a great time and would definitely go back.

My wife and I had a wonderful 5-night stay at Mayumi and Hide's perfect little inn. It is second to none from the moment we made initial enquiries to when Hide finally dropping us off at the Hakuba Information Centre on the last day. Our room has an attached onsen that overlooks the snow-covered field right outside. One can't ask for more.

Mayumi and Hide were the perfect hosts, and looked after us from A to Z and beyond. Whatever requests or queries - they were ever ready with their advice and guidance. We are already planning our next visit.
