We stayed for 8 nights. The room was much bigger than any of our previous motels in Hakuba. It had two single beds, a small fridge, kettle, bathroom and my favourite a balcony looking straight at the mountains. We were surprised to have room service, our towels and bins were changed every second day, we have never had this at other hotels in hakuba. The Onsen was lovely and had a hairdryer. The drying room had a heater and lockable lockers. We got heavily discounted lift passes from reception which was great. The manager ordered us a taxi and took our bags to the taxi and shook our hand on departure. We did have to pay an Onsen tax that wasn’t included on our bill in booking.com. The hotel only accepts cash. The location is a couple of hundred metres away from the lifts and very central a few mins walk to the shops and the bus stop. There’s heaps of restaurants around. We look forward to staying here next year.

This was our first trip to Hakuba. We had seven nights at 'The Grace.' It was nothing flash but it was clean, comfortable, cosy and very well located. The locker room in the basement was excellent to safely store our skis and boots. Beware that exiting and in particular RETURNING to the locker room in ski boots was not easy. There were about 10 steep, slippery steps with no handrail. Not to worry, we were allowed to enter through the lobby. The owner didn't mind at all. Tea making facilities plus a small fridge in our room was handy. 'Lawsons' grocery store is a pleasant 10-15 min walk for supplies. Back in town, not far from the Train Station is another very large grocery store called 'Big' which also stocked clothing and other items. Sort of a Coles and K-Mart store rolled in to one! There was a safe in our room. The hotel's own Onsen (bath house) was our highlight. After skiing, we all looked forward to relaxing in the very hot water. A hairdryer was available in the Onsen. Our only problem - we can't get a booking for next year!

Our group of 11 spent a week at this hotel. I have nothing but praise for our wonderful host, Sekosan, who manned the reception desk each and every day (and night) of our stay. The hotel is centrally located in Happo-One and is walking distance to the gondola and other chairlifts. The nearest shuttle bus stop to chairlifts is Car Park #3 about 300m away. The Bus Terminal is about 500m and an easy walk slightly uphill to Grace Hotel. There are many cafes, restaurants and bars close by i.e. short walk. As noted in other reviews, this hotel’s decor is dated and the price reflects this making it excellent value and you’re not expecting 4+ stars. However, rooms were clean, warm, comfortable and spacious by Japanese standards. None of our group, ranging in age from 19 - 57, found the beds or pillows uncomfortable. Additional, softer pillows available on request as are hairdryers, and ski boot dryers. If you are one to carry a lot of electronics, bring a power board as there are limited power points in the room. There are none in the bathroom but there is a shared handbasin/mirror area at the end of the corridor with powerpoint if you need to shave or dry hair near a mirror. My only suggestion is to request rooms facing the ski slopes and not the street. Refuel Bar (happy hour daily, good burgers, fries etc.) is next door and things can get quite noisy at night from people being generally rowdy outside. The hotel’s private onsen is a bonus and highly recommended after a day of skiing. It is separated into male and female rooms. Initially the idea of getting your kit off in public might deter you from trying, let me add that I used it every day and I was the only one using it each time. There is an inside and outside onsen, it’s hot, around 40C but you get used to the temperature the more you use it. It was also pretty neat to be sitting in an outdoor onsen supplied by a local spring and to have snow falling around you. Discounted lift tickets are sold at reception. Also ask at reception for discount card to take to “Skier’s Dom” ski hire next door. Very good rental rates however, they speak very little English and if you’re a beginner skier or not sure exactly what you need to look for in a well fitted ski boot you might be better off going to a place that speaks English and has a bigger range. See my review of Rhythm Snowsports. I really can’t fault the staff at Hotel Grace. Sekosan is the most friendly and gracious host. In many respects it was his customer service that made our stay so enjoyable. He speaks fairly good English and was very accommodating of every request. He even drove me in his own car to a ski lesson, that he called and booked on my behalf, and was booked only 30 minutes before it started to ensure I wasn’t late. On more than one occasion we asked Sekosan to recommend a place to eat. Every time he picked a winner. Make sure you have dinner at the tiny restaurant directly across the road. It only seats about 14 pax and is extremely popular so be sure to book in advance. I can’t tell you the name because it has no signage. We will return to Hakuba and will definitely stay at Hotel Grace again. You can’t beat the combination of location and customer service you will find here.

So well located for skiing. We were there 4 nights, skiied 3 days. For 2 of those days many of the other runs on the mountain were closed due to bad weather, but the Nakiyama lifts were still running so we were able to ski all day (though not to the top as it was white-out and the upper lifts weren't running). The onsen were very hot, but divine after a day on the slopes. Lockers were excellent, though the steps back down from the outside could get quite slippery and a little dangerous, so be careful. The room was so big compared to Tokyo hotels, so felt indulgent space -wise. Furnishings are dark so the room felt a little old, but to be honest we were here to ski and not lounge in the room (though you comfortably could). Japanese breakfast was fascinating and deliciously unique. The Western breakfast was average. Service was friendly and efficient. Would definitely recommend this place for the value and proximity (easy, flat 5 minute walk) to the ski lifts.

Myself and my partner stayed here for a few nights while snowboarding for a few days in Hakuba. As most reviews highlight, this hotel is quite dated but it is fantastic value for money as it has everything you need. Our room was nice! we were given twin beds, it wasn’t really an issue.. the room was a good size compared to most hotels in japan. We had a small balcony that had a beautiful view looking over the mountains. The bathroom was great; really hot shower and good water pressure. Even had a bath in our room which was nice after a long day out in the ski fields. Breakfast was lovely traditional Japanese style with table service. There is a locker room/ drying facility where you can store your gear. The front desk man also sells discounted lift passes and you can hire your gear just next door for a very reasonable price. The location is great as it is a 5min walk from the bus station which takes you to and from Nagano train station. You are also just minutes walk from the ski fields chair lifts and a number of great restaurants. Jacks bar down the street is great for happy hour for a few drinks and a pub feed if you are really hungry after a long day riding! The only negative I can say for this hotel is the WiFi was very bad. Did not reach our room or even the breakfast area. However did not find this as a huge issue as all the restaurants and pubs in the area had WiFi. Make sure you take cash to this town as this hotel and a number of restaurants only accept cash and there isn’t many ATMs around. Overall, would stay again.

Was a clean modest hotel in a great location. Comfortable beds (though had to ask for softer pillows), ski lift discount tickets at reception & a nice little onsen as well. Would recommend for the price & location

Hotel is basic and needs a bit of renovation. Rooms are clean but very dated. The hotel smells a bit like cigarette smoke. Front desk personnel are friendly and helpful. Be aware that they prefer “cash” instead of credit card. It is close to lifts and gondola, and a short walk from the bus station. Next time will stay somewhere else.

The hotel isn’t what you would call 4 or 5 star to Australian standards. It’s more of a 3 star look. However the service is great and the location is perfect. Plenty of bars & restaurants within 5minute walk. Getting to the slopes is easy from here. You can ask reception to order you a cab and make reservations easily. Breakfast was more traditional Japanese cousin and ready on the table at 7:30am every morning. If you after a western breakfast I suggest taking a small walk there are plenty of other options. Overall the hotel was neat & tidy, the location is excellent. Beds are rather hard and so are the pillows, suggest bringing your own pillow and you will sleep comfortably.aircon is excellent nice and hot, you can adjust yourself. And the showers are nice and hot. There is a holding area for your gear in lock up downstairs, your provided with your own key. You can also do your laundry at the hotel. And there is a inside and outside onsen. I would happily stay here again despite the hotel being a 3 star appearance.

We stayed at the grace for 4 nights in February 2018, in two standard rooms (a family of 3 adults & 2 kids), for a skiing holiday. It’s a basic and clean family run hotel very centrally located, and at a very good price (under $160 AUD per room per night). They were very helpful with information & also offered discounted ski lift passes (from 5,200 yen to 4,500yen for an adult day pass. 2 day passes gave even more discount). The rooms had lovely little balcony’s which was nice and you could control the temperature of the room which was also great. The bed linen was basic (which is to be expected at the price point I suppose), and I had to ask for soft pillows, as the original ones felt hard as a rock, (which was sorted within 5 minutes of asking). Also to note - the hotel only accepts cash, but if you don’t bring enough to cover your stay, there was an atm at the bus station which was only a 5 min walk from the hotel. The hotel also had an indoor & outdoor onsen which was completely empty of anyone when we checked it out. This place definitely delivers a good budget yet comfortable option. (Though next time I’m hoping to get afew other families to join us so that we can look at sharing a large villa & enjoy alittle more space and shuttle services).

Like previous reviews have pointed out this place is not a five star hotel nor does it profess to be. It has all the basics for a good night stay. Onsen, friendly and helpful staff. Quiet stay and adequate heating for the cold nights we have had. Large dry room and lockers for ski storage. Laundromat facilities. Housekeeping is alternate mornings. Breakfast is alternate day Japanese/ western and served in a strict half an hour window. We got a call the first two mornings for breakfast and by the time we got down, the food was cold. The staff try hard to communicate with us in limited English but we got by. Near ski lifts and near many lovely restaurants. No luxury but then again for the price it is good value and we would consider staying here again.
