The hotel has a wooden charm about it. It had a very nice onsen which is well managed and with outdoor snow experience. The view from the hotel was amazing, you could see the entire mountain range and valley. It was total bliss. The hotel staff was kind and cooperative. Its located 15 min walk from the station and I would recommend you take that walk as it's very scenic ( if you have less luggage). The breakfast was good and the coffee was very good. I would like to visit this town again someday. The price was a very good value for room and facilities.

Stayed 2 nights here, a standard sized hotel room. Hotel staff picks you up from the Hakuba Train Station, else its a 15 min walk (uphill) to the hotel.

Breakfast and dinner variety was great, nice quality of food and friendly staff. Try the tempura! Its amazing!

There are 2 onsens in the building to try out, really nice with indoor and outdoor ones.

However, shuttles to nearby ski resorts and back can be confusing, be sure to clarify before you head out.

Stayed at hakuba highland hotel for my 5 days ski trip. Pros: very friendly staff, excellent service, onsen with a panorama/arguably best view of the Japanese alps, buffets breakfast and dinners. Cons: room is slightly old (although they are kept very cleaned); location is rather (not an issue if you are only there to ski as there are daily shuttle buses to the various ski resorts. However, you would need a cab if you intend to look for some nightlife. Genki go bus doesn't pass by hakuba highland). Overall, this hotel is very good valued for money and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Tips:
For equipment rental, you would do better trying central snowsport besides happo gondola than to use the rainbow rental besides the hotel. For approximately the same price, you get far better equipment at the former.

Highland Hotel is located on top of a hill behind Hakuba Station, and it takes about 10 minutes walk to get from the station to the hotel. The hotel does offer free shuttle pickup from the station, you just have to call them when you get to the station. The hotel also offers free shuttle bus to the different ski resorts, with a bus every hour.

However, the hotel is a bit more of a walk to get to town. I think it might take around 40-50 minutes walk to get to Happo Bus Terminal, which is not that ideal if you're tired from a long day of skiing. The hotel does offer free shuttle bus around 5.30 pm to get to town, but you will have to either walk or take a taxi back. The closest shop to get groceries is also about 25 minutes walk, and you will have to climb back up the hill to get back. I have to admit that I just stocked up on groceries and had dinner in my room rather than going out to restaurants, just to save the hassle of walking back or taking a taxi.

The hotel is a bit rundown and the walls are quite thin, as mentioned by previous guests. If you have a room in front of the lift, I would recommend to request a change as the lift is creeks a lot, which can wake you up at night if you're more of a light sleeper (which I can personally say is a total nightmare). You also can hear pretty much everything of what people are saying in the hallway.

Dinner and breakfast were quite nice. They switch the breakfast menu a little bit every two days. The view from the dining room is absolutely lovely, looking out to the mountains. The onsen was lovely as well, especially after a day of skiing. It was my first time using an onsen and they gave me a "how-to onsen" sheet, which was helpful. The outdoor onsen also looks out to the mountains, making it very relaxing.

Staff were helpful when I was there. The two staff members I spent most time with spoke very good English, and they were generally polite and helpful. It was White Day in Japan while I was there, and the staff members were giving out sweets, which was nice. The people staying at the hotel were generally quite nice as well. For ski passes, it can be cheaper to buy from the hotel than at the resort but it depends on how many days; I believe that it's cheaper at the hotel if you're skiing for 1-3 days, but possibly cheaper at the resort if you're immediately buying for a few days.

I wasn't quite sure whether to give this hotel a 3 or a 4 as it did have pros and cons. Pros are that the staff were nice, the onsen is good and the breakfast/dinner was pretty good. However, the location of the hotel is a bit inconvenient (despite the shuttle buses) and the walls are horribly thin, so your sleep quality might not be that good. I think I would probably try somewhere else the next time I'm in Hakuba, but if Highland Hotel was the only choice then I wouldn't mind that much either.

We had stayed there on the weekend of March. We arrived there early morning (7AM) and the hotel was already started and the staff gave us ski tickets (IC card) which were included in the hotel package at the front desk. The rental ski sets could be got at the ski shop which is located at the hotel parking. The hotel arranged both ski tickets and the ski rental sets with the discount price, and it is quite good.
The hotel parking lot for cars is larger comparing with other Hakuba area hotels and you can get to the hotel entrance.
Many reviewers already mentioned both hot springs (Onsen bath) and buffet for dinner and breakfast. There is a tip for buffet: If the hotel is occupied, you should go to the restaurant to wait for dinner and breakfast before 10-15 minutes. Many people are waiting for opening the restaurant at the door, and would get the better seat. When you can get the seat, you should get foods with main dishes.
As you may realize, Japanese people are quite organized and make easily a longer line to get food at the hotel restaurant.

Overall, the hotel was a good stay. I also recommend to stay the room at mountain view. You can see the Happo-one ski resort with Karamatsu-dake mountain when it is clear.

This hotel is very good choice in terms of location, affordability, cleanliness and service. Not suitable for pursuers of luxury or gourmet lovers. The hotel does not look very attractive on the outside but inside its more than OK. Rooms are renovated and clean, all the standard amenities are provided. Heating units are powerful, individually controlled.

Free hotel parking place provides enough parking lots. There is a kids corner inside the hotel, smoking corner, vending machines, small shop and PC with free internet. Use is limited to 15 minutes in a row per person. Staff is extremely kind and helpful, I would say even more than is usual in Japan.

A fireplace is there available for anyone on the first come first served basis. You can sit there, sip wine and feed it with provided firewood. Best feature is probably the rotenburo (under the open sky) spa with a stunning view of Japan Alps.

Actually, the view in a sense offsets the location. The location, unlike most Hakuba hotels, is distant from the ski resorts. On the other hand, its walking distance from the railway station. The hotel provides free transport from and to the station and also operates regular coaches to the ski resorts. By car or bus it takes about 10 minutes to get there.

Price is reasonable. Some 16.000 JPY per night for a family of two adults with one kid (2
yrs old) which includes buffet style breakfast and dinner.

There is not much to say when it comes to shortcomings. I personally could not find anything really tasty on the buffet menu. The few meat dishes available were very, very far from fresh. As if it was prepared two days in advance. On the other hand, most Japanese and other foreigners seemed to be satisfied so it might have been just some weird incompatibility between my palate and their cuisine. There is only one lift good for max. 5-6 people in the hotel. I still wonder how come there were no waiting lines during my stay, but its capacity is probably sufficient.

If we go to Hakuba again I will not waste my time looking for betterhotel. This one is almost perfect.

The hotel is old but they renovated the room. Stayed in a mountain view room with daily buffet breakfast and dinner and love it. Paid 17,000 JPY per night for 2 guests. If you didn't buy meals when you book, they sold it at 600 JPY for breakfast and 1,500 JPY for dinner per person which is very low for in house guests. Outside guests must pay 2,500 JPY for dinner per person.

They have yukata for you daily so you don't have to pack your own in house clothes. You are welcomed to wear it when you are in the hotel, in the restaurant and use their onsen. They have one indoor and one outdoor pools. The heater worked very well. They had a short stainless steel frame in room. I used it to hang my wet socks and undergarments in front of the heater and they became dry very fast.

They speak English . I arrived at the Hakuba train station, was lost as I didn't know which way to walk to the hotel. Then I saw their shuttle van picking up another guests, so we just got on the van. They sent us for free to Happo One Station to visit the mountain and to the train station after we checked out.

Very happy I chose this hotel. It's like a four star old large resort. Have seen better days but still ok when other hotels having onsen charged too much. Very good service. Nothing to complain except it's an old hotel. But the room I stayed was newly renovated and was large with a long sofa.

The Hakuba Valley is a series of Mountains set around a small town with a train station. Hakuba Highland Hotel (HHH) is set at the top of a small hill, less than 10 minute walk from the town and station. The courteous staff at this hotel have great English, some are quite modest about how well they speak other languages. The three best things about HHH are
Its accessibility to all Mountains for skiing/boarding
Incredible buffet breakfast and dinner
The picturesque onsen

If you are in Hakuba to ski/board then you need to experience at least three of the half dozen Mt's. In doing so there is an efficient shuttle bus service provided by the region. One of the stops is HHH this makes accessing all of the slopes near by very easy and only requires a change of bus for one Mt. Which is almost an hour from the hotel. This service is free.

There are beautiful restaurants nearby to the hotel both extravagant and inexpensive, however, the hotel's buffet is the best value meal you'll find, the food is both Japanese and western in both sittings and the view from the table is incredible. Its great to have a first class option that involves no effort after a big day of boarding.

The Onsen at HHH is beautiful, both the male and female sides have an indoor and outdoor section from which to soak in the scenery. They also provide a host of balms and lotions to make sure you come out looking and feeling your best.

The service was second to none, every member of staff was courteous and eager to help us enjoy our stay. One fine example was a young lady named Bibiana who's English is fantastic and her helpful nature most appreciated. The staff here helped us book restaurants, order taxis, by taking us to dinner, if the hotel's shuttle drove past us on the hill to or from the hotel, they would stop and offer us a lift. The staff at HHH were, in hindsight the real highlight. Thanks to each and every one of you.

I gladly recommend Hakuba Highland Hotel to any traveler and found it to be of exceptional value as well as impeccable service with comfortable rooms.

Great hotel that is near enough to the train station. The staff has limited command of English, but they are enthusiastic to help as much as possible.

Rooms with the mountain view are great - you can open the windows in the morning and admire (and photograph) the scenery.

We did 3 days ski in Tsugaike and decided to take a whole day rest in highland hotel. They pick us up at the station 10 mins after the phone call. Room was spacious and it is a 和洋 type equipped with 2 heaters, air purifier, sofa bed. Breakfast and dinner is buffer types and alcohol drinks price reasonable. The newly renovated onset extension is very nice. A fireplace at the lobby where you can relax. Hotel has shuttle bus to ski fields and there is a ski rental next door to hotel offer discount rental to hotel guest. We choose not to ski as we prefer ski in /ski out or within walking distant ski fields.
