Definitely do check out the onsens. A day of skiing out in the mountains, and coming back to the onsens was absolutely fantastic.
Shuttle service provided to Echigo Yuzawa station. You can also go to the Visitor Center at the train station and get them
to help you call the hotel for a pick up.
Highly recommended!
The facility is larger than I expected, and depending on the floor and room you stay on, you may have to walk quite a bit to get to the large public bath. It may be quite difficult for people with weak legs. The baths in the large public baths were extremely hot, and some were not even accessible.
The wifi worked fine, but was too slow for reading online manga.
I think it was worth the price.
Stayed here with my family at the start of the year, and we had a fabulous time here! The hotel is very close to the Echigo Yuzawa Station, but shuttle bus is still available (remember to notify them about your arrival time). There was a staff who was really good at English and has helped us a lot, love that we could choose our own yukata!
Our room was really spacious and the view was just AMAZING. Our plan came with breakfast (buffet) and traditional Japanese dinner, and they were perfect! Do remember to check out their onsens as there are a lot of options, you may need a whole day just to try out all of them.
They also provide ski/ snowboarding rentals as well, but we booked ours at somewhere else and they still let us to put our gears overnight so that we can go straight to the ski resort directly the next morning.
Been wanting to visit Hotel Futaba again this year, but seems it has gotten quite full already, so better plan your trip ahead!
とても嬉しかったね~ ありがとう!
Our room was a typical Japanese-style room, but we were impressed that it had an open-air hot spring in the room.
For dinner, we enjoyed a Japanese-style banquet meal made with seasonal ingredients from Echigo, and the plan included a bottle (1 go) of Echigo sake of your choice. Niigata is famous for its sake, so there are many famous sakes, but we decided to order a sake we hadn't heard of before. And it was delicious. We liked it so much that the next day we went to Ponshukan at Echigo Yuzawa Station and bought some.
The hot springs, which are divided into two areas and can be enjoyed by men and women on an alternating basis, were wonderful, but it was unfortunate that some of the baths were extremely hot or too lukewarm.
We really enjoyed the multiple "themed" onsen on 6th floor. There was one in the cave that was nice and hot. It was a truly wonderful experience to enjoy the snow while in the onsen. We skied 2 days in Gala Yuzawa and there was a free shuttle in the parking lot across the street in New Otani Hotel. Very convenient. only 5 minute ride. We also walked down the hill to a mom and pop grocery store that sells fruits and vegetables. We had the most delicious (and most expensive) strawberries. They were soo fragrant and sweet! It was an unforgettable experience. Exactly what we were looking for to unwind.
The only downside of this hotel is that Japanese people smoke a lot which is a problem anywhere you go in Japan. Outside the breakfast hall was always very smoky. We didn't smell anything at breakfast, just when we needed to use the restroom during breakfast. Our room was fine though, although they provided ashtray in the room. We did not smell any smoke in our room though.
Since the daily rate comes with breakfast and dinner, I recommend to splurge a bit if that is possible in the budget and get the room with the private outdoor onsen. It really makes the entire experience so unforgettable and gives you so much freedom to use it anytime you want.
Our 5 year old loved it. They even gave her kid sized yukata and slippers. They also had children's meal although they were pretty much the same things as adults, just less. They also get to choose one kid entree of pasta or fried rice. My daughter loved the breakfast. She enjoyed picking her own food at the buffet.
We highly recommend this place. Although we don't speak Japanese, the staff speaks a little English. Combined with speaking with our hands and their willingness to please, we had all our needs taken care of.
They also provide a free shuttle from the Echigo Yuzawa station. You need to call them in advance to let them know your arrival time though so they know when you are arriving. We had our concierge in the Tokyo hotel do that for us so it's all done in Japanese to avoid confusion.
My family of 7 came for a ski holiday and the location is excellent. It is only a 3 minutes drive from Yuzawa Kogen, a small ski resort that is perfect for beginners.
After arriving from Tokyo, we went to the tourist information counter to ask them to call the hotel for us. They arrived shortly and loaded all 7 of us and ALL our HEAVY bags onto the bus. bus ride was less than 5 mins. (one reason why our bags were heavy was because we loaded up on sakes at the train station, which was unnecessary because the hotel gift shop sold sakes at similar prices.)
Check in took a while because we needed to shorten the stay for my father's room (emergency situation at home). But to their credit, they gave us a refund for the 2 nights even though everything was already pre-paid, yay!!!
staff service was excellent - truly 5 stars. on her own initiative, one staff offered to cut the pears that we bought. On another day, she cut the water melon we bought from the supermarket. On the final day, just as my train was pulling in, I realized that I had left my phones in the hotel! after calling the hotel, they sent my phones to the train station for me! oh... I also dropped some money at the front desk which they returned to me!
because my mother doesn't ski, she went to Niigata (city) for a day tour. When she arrived back at Echigo Yuzawa station, I called the front desk and they sent the bus to pick her up! just for her! I was impressed.
very honest and hardworking staff. RItz Carlton customer service level, I would rate it.
Hotel hardware is a little old but everything worked perfectly. The private onsen was perfect after a full day of skiing. The darn thing was that the next room smoked very often which affected my onsen experience.
The nightly keiseki dinners were beautifully presented. unfortunately, taste-wise, the food didn't impress me. the meals were nice but there is room for improvement. Service is where the Hotel Futaba truly impressed. The children didn't like the children's meal provided and when we requested for the Japanese steam egg custard, the kitchen cooked one up immediately.
Hotel Futaba cost aprox USD230 per person per night half board, which I felt was pricey. But taking into account the excellent service quality, the price was reasonable.
Would I return? YES! but I would need to start making more money :)
Stayed in a traditional tatami room which was very pleasant, but the crowning feature was the wooden bathtub with windows that folded open to provide spectacular views of the snow covered mountains - wonderful.
The Onsen was great and well maintained with inside and outside baths.
Breakfast was excellent with a wide variety of dishes, and great views through huge glass windows.
Dinner was a spectacular affair, served in a private room, although I found watching my abalone thrashing about while it cooked to death in front of me rather disconcerting!
I enjoyed staying at Hotel Futaba, and although its expensive it offered good value compared to other Japanese Ryokans I have stayed in.
"If you find a package deal with a private onsen experience then I highly suggest it."Read full review
