Mr and Mrs Yumoto were the most incredible hosts, the ryokan is so beautiful and charming! Nestled comfortably in the hills of yudanaka with picturesque views of the surrounding mountains, this is the perfect place to stay for a traditional Japanese experience. Mrs Yumoto prepared us the most delicious Japanese style food presented a most beautiful way, she even asked us if we wanted a western or Japanese style breakfast in the morning! Mr Yumoto drove us to the snow monkey park and provided us with wellies to wear as it was snow covered and muddy up there. The onsen in the hotel was absolutely perfect as well, me and my wife had access to the private one which was great for our aching feet from the big walk. Overall we had the best time here, I highly recommend staying here if you want a traditional experience in Japan with friendly, helpful hosts in a beautiful setting.

Snow Monkeys are definitely worth seeing and Shimaya is a lovely, traditional and convenient place to stay, with wonderful hosts. Our tatami room was comfortable and large enough, the private outdoor onsen was in a beautiful setting with views over the city to the mountains. Breakfast fantastic. Fortunately, before our arrival, Mr Yumoto messaged us to suggest we come to Shimaya before going to the Monkey Park to pick up some gum boots as the track was quite muddy. He then drove us to the park, which is NOT the same place as the Monkey Park bus stop. Shimaya is an easy walk from the train station, although Mr Yumoto kindly drove us to the station.

The. Shimaya Onsen in Yadanaka was centrally located for easy access to the railway station and the snow monkeys. Our hosts Mr and Mrs Yumoto provided transport and also suggested a local restaurant when needed. Meals at the Onsen were well prepared with a choice of Japanese or European for breakfast.
Our room was an interesting treat and we greatly enjoyed the hot pool.
Our room had pleasant view of the mountains .

It was a beautiful and truly lovely stay at Shimaya Yudanaka. Mr Chiro & his wife was so hospitable, the rooms was very cosy and the traditional style of living was made extra special by them.
Mr Chiro arranged our private onsen which had a very pretty view and was so kind to drop us off at the Snow Monkey park and the train station. Do visit them and enjoy the stay just as we had.

I stayed for one night here. I enjoyed the hospitality from the owner. They provided transport from and to Yudanaka Station (which was a great help since I had luggages with me), transport from and to the Snow Monkey Park (although unfortunately I did not have time for that), and also good recommendations of the food and restaurant options around the area. The room is traditional (although it may feel old to some people) but spacious and comfortable.

Onsen is quite small, perhaps only for 2-3 people. There are only 2-3 showers area and the water pressure was weak. When I was there, the next group after me had to queue. Considering the small area, perhaps should consider having the onsen as private (i.e. reserve certain time slots for certain rooms) to avoid people having to queue.

Only stayed 1 night here. The room has all the basic necessity, neat and clean. However, the toilet has quite a strong stench of urine smell so we are not sure if the toilet is being cleaned properly or not. As the toilet and the shower/wash up area are separated, hence we didn't feedback to the staff since we only stayed one night. The friendly and warm staff/owner who went the extra mile to make us feel comfortable managed to compensate for the unpleasant smell. :)

Our stay at Shimaya was beyond perfect, it was amazing in every way. The owner was a perfect host giving us a ride not only to the snow monkey park but to also picking us up and taking us back to the local train station! Our breakfast was served to perfection and was prepared with fresh local ingredients that left us full and quite happy. The onsen was very relaxing and had us rejuvenated after the hike from the monkey park through the picturesque town and back to our ryokan. We would definitely stay at Shimaya again!

This is an awesome Shimaya Ryokan that has the rooms in vintage and classic look. We are welcome warmly by Mr. Yumoto. Mr & Mrs Yumoto are very nice and accomodating hosts to their guests.

They even provided us the snow boots and took us to snow monkeys (great park) and picked us up after.

We highly recommend Shimaya Ryokan to stay in whenever you are in Yudanaka.

Thank you for your hospitality and will tell it to our friends and family!

We stayed at Shimaya in February 2024 for 3 nights. Would highly recommend staying here for the close location near the station (10min walk with luggage). Shimaya is walking distance to various dinner options and the shuttle bus to the ski field.

The host was very accomodating and drove us to the monkey park. We opted to walk back to Shimaya as opposed to getting the bus which I would recommend as you can see a lot of the town.

Would stay again if we are in Yudanaka

Thanks Mr Shimaya and all the staff! We were 4 people and we spent two nights in this traditional Japanese-style room, very comfortable. All the essentials were present. The futons were very soft and warm. The room consisted of an entrance hall, a fairly large main room, a small room with shower, a sink, an outdoor room divided by paper walls with a table and two chairs and the necessary to make tea and enjoy the view of the panorama offered by Yudanaka, a small closet immediately alongside containing a toilet, and finally an external balcony. Inside the structure it is possible to have breakfast (we have not opted for this service so I cannot express myself on the matter), but the most important thing is the presence of an internal onsen (no mixed gender), that you can use how much do you want. It was beautyful. There is also the possibility of getting a very characteristic public onsen's key right behind the hotel. The first morning the Shimaya staff accompanied us to the Snow Monkey Park for free. In the early afternoon we have Booked the private onsen where you can go dressed a bit like in the pool, to bring even the most reluctant to bring this wonderful aspect of Japanese culture. Mr Shimaya was great to advice us for where tò eat or what to do nearby, and he was very kind with all of us. Thanks again from all 4 of us, we loved every minute spent there.

ありがとう ! <3
