Our little ski group, including my husband and a friend of ours were the first Australians to stay at this amazing little hotel and we are still remembered by the owner and senior staff. It has been 3 years since our last visit but some staff still remain. Many more staff seem to speak English. The excellent rooms and facilities still please. Designed like a European Ski Lodge with amazing woodwork throughout (check out the lounge!) facilities include pool jacuzzi and sauna in the basement with a ski hire and laundry and lots of vending machines. A Phenix brand shop is on the 1st floor with prices a third of what we find in Australia and Phenix gear is fantastic.
Rooms are huge by Japanese standards and include 5 star facilities including DVD and wireless internet. Genuine ski in and ski out to Oku Shiga resort at the far end of Shiga Kogen the largest ski area in Japan! No snowboarders allowed here though,,,you will have to catch the ski shuttle bus to the next ski area about 5 minutes away! For skiers though you can ski from one end of the resort to the other and back in a day and then relax in the fabulous lounge and enjoy the view of snow falling through the huge plate glass windows! Then visit the public bath, sauna and relax room before enjoying dinner of 5 star standards in one of 2, 5 star restaurants. No real village life here so best to include all meals with your booking! A new inclusion since our last visit is a card offering free non alcoholic and hot beverages in the lounge during our stay...nice! Staff are all trained to 5 star standard and our favourite this visit was Tomoe San in the Japanese restaurant. Excellent English and friendly manner! We love this place and will return...a little expensive but worth every penny!

This is our 4th visit here over 5 years, each time staying at least a week...many of the staff remain and we feel like we are coming home....Saitosan in the Italian Restaurant...Mizukawasan in the Japanese Restaurant and lounge ( he has our vote for the best smile!)This is a little boutique oasis with all the charm and relaxation of a private chalet! From the relaxation room with the comfiest loungers and massage equipment, to the public bath, pool and saunas....overall a totally relaxing experience with excellent food...they accomodate our fruitarian, vegetarian friend with specially prepared dishes too! The biggest rooms I have seen in Japan and a real bathroom with double basin! Also the best ski lockers we have seen across the world....for the quality of the rest and the cuisine...truly good value! Each dinner is a succession of 5 courses or more if you can eat them,,,finished off with desert and tea or coffee in the lounge with huge windows with excellent view of the mountain. Don't forget a visit to the Phenix outlet shop which has excellent prices on the best ski gear around!

We have been coming to Japan to snow ski for a number of years now and the the Hotel Grand Phenix is a home away from home.

Food: I'm vegetarian and the food selection is great. Fresh, clean and very well prepared. They even have extra fruit for my breakfasts!

Staff: All the staff are wonderful. Friendly, helpful and happy.

Management: All Management of the Hotel are great. Kaszu, the President of the Hotel is a great guy...he even took us out skiing one year and showed us around the Shiga Kogen resorts.

Onsen: Best onsen in Japan!

Location: It's ski in ski out at the end of the Skiga Kogen resort complex.

Nightlife: None. After hours of skiing, an onsen, a beer and dinner...I'm right off to bed.

Assistance: Staff will assist in all aspects of your stay. Very helpful.

Wifi: Free in room and rather quick too!

Rooms: Big by Japanese standard. Big Bathrooms and lots of space. Very clean indeed.

Lockers: Great ski lockers to store your skis and then wander straight into the bar for a pre-onsen drink.

Size: The Hotel is not too big and not too small...it's just the right size.

Ambience: Warm, friendly, Swiss chalet-like on the outside.

Overall: I love this place and the people that work here. The President is doing something right by fostering a great working culture that is reflected in the way staff treat the guests.

I will be back and would recommed this Hotel to others.

We have spent 4 nights here and expected to ski for 2 days however we only got 1 in as 2 storms hit over our stay. The hotel was a great haven while watching the snow and wind. In a nutshell the rooms, Onsen, lounge and staff are top notch. We were close to the ski lift so could get out in the morning without any hassle. The highlight is the food. We booked the room with dinner included and were served up wonderful 7 course Japanese or Italian fare that was superb. This is not a place for the budget minded but when we relaxed by the fire enjoying a glass of red wine while it snowed I was very glad we spent the money.

We finished our Japanese vacation with a week in the snow at Shiga Kogen. Unfamiliar with this part of Japan we were delighted by every new discovery. Central to a wonderful backdrop was the Hotel Grand Phenix and it's committed team who made our stay feel like a real home away from home. The rooms were spacious and well appointed, the restaurant food of very high quality and the staff were some of the very best we have had the pleasure to meet in our global travels. Their pro activity and attention to detail made our stay at the Phenix the highlight of our trip. Special thanks to Yoshi - you rock!

Great escape from the city. Beautiful chalet with decor from Europe. The fireplace in the lounge is gorgeous. The restaurant staff said we can have dessert and coffee there which was fantastic.

Spacious rooms with high ceiling and great view.

We could go straight onto the ski slopes and the hotel gave a discount for the ski lifts which was nice. Very convenient to rent skis at the hotel.

The big bath was spacious and fantastic view. Great to relax after a long ski day.

The staff were all welcoming and very kind.

Highly recommended!!

After staying in a much less comfortable Ryokan for the first part of our annual ski trip to Japan, we always look forward to our arrival at the Phenix! So many of the staff have been here for years and remember us. Other guests are friendly too!
We book directly and communication with management is timely and professional and they are happy to accomodate our room and special menu requests.
We love the lounge and La Stella Alpina Italian Restaurant, both excellent with lovely views of the mountain. Mizukawa san in the lounge is our favourite member of staff, always smiling, relaxed, professional and he makes a great cocktail too! His service is no 1. The hotel was very busy during this stay and there was a bit more room noise than we are used to and the housekeeping staff were pushed to their limits I think...but that is a very small point in what was a fantastic stay. We hired snow shoes one afternoon and had our skiis waxed at the end of our trip at the hire shop...cost was very reasonable and service fantastic. The pool, jacuzzi, public bath all are well maintained and perfectly relaxing. They seem to be bringing on some newer staff in training too...well done. Breakfast has been improved by the addition of an omelette chef...ready to make your requests. Rooms are spacious and well appointed. Great Phenix Outlet too...best range I think I have seen there this year... Now ready to plan next year's return.

Very nice and spacious hotel, beautiful powder snow. We were snowed in for 3 days and there is very little to do. You are stuck in the middle of nowhere. Only 2 restaurants Japanese or Italian and they are quite pricey. Bring a book and a laptop with Netflix as there are no English speaking channels, no videos and no books.

We stayed for 6 nights in February and were very disappointed with the meals – in particular the evening meals. The hotel has many good features and it is a shame that the Kagaribi Restaurant lets them down.

The rooms are very spacious for Japanese standards and include a great bathroom, nice sitting area, great views, lovely linen, fluffy robes etc. The locker room is warm and spacious and the location is great for ski in/ski out. The pool and spa are a great feature although they closed the pool for over 4 hours for a photography session the day that the lifts were shut down – unfortunate timing! There is a lovely lounge area however be aware that cigars are allowed and we found this unbearable.

Having stayed in the Skiga Kogen area in hotels in Ichinose, Yakebitaiyama and Okushiga many times (10 trips in all) we have experienced a variety of meals over the years. We have always paid for half board (breakfast and dinner) and generally you get what you pay for but sadly this was not the case here. On arrival we were told that there were no dinner times available before 8.00pm. Ordinarily that would not be a problem but for a ski holiday when you are up early it is quite late. After much protest and discussion we were squeezed into earlier time slots but felt that we were only reluctantly served our meals. We only had dinner in the Japanese restaurant but found it was well below average especially compared to the fabulous Japanese restaurant in the Okushiga Kogen Hotel. There was very little choice of food and even less when you are told you both had to choose the same meal! At a little over 53,000 Yen per night it left a sour taste in our mouth.

After lunching here last year we decided to stay in the hotel. Above all ,what makes this hotel special is the wonderful staff. They really know how to make guests very comfortable. The rooms are spacious and have lovely views of the resort and the onsen is beautiful with lots of nice touches like deluxe lotions for female guests. The food is excellent and the lounge does great cocktails. Acess to the lifts is quick and easy. But it is the service which was the real standout for me. A very special experience which I will treasure.
