Our parents inherited a small hotel - El Echaurren. They transformed it, converting it into their home and a home for all who visited. Our mother Marisa refined the traditional culinary meals of Granny Julia and stamped her own character and elegance on the dishes. Her efforts were recognised when she won Spain's National Gastronomic Award in 1987.And now we, Marisa's children - the fifth generation of the family, are dedicated to maintaining the essence of the Echaurren while at the same time invest in its future. As such, we've converted our old hostel into a modern, comfortable hotel where nothing is lacking. Our aim has been to give everything a contemporary twist but without losing the sense of warmth. You'll notice a strong Nordic influence in the interior design. We've continued the traditional cooking of our mother which you can enjoy in the Echaurren Traditional restaurant. In 2002 we opened El Portal de Echaurren where Francis lets his creative juices flow freely. It specialises in avant-garde dishes - very personal and primarily sourced from the local area. Two years after its launch El Portal de Echaurren became the first-ever restaurant in La Rioja to gain a Michelin star. It has maintained this distinction ever since. In 2012 Francis won Spain's National Gastronomic Award, a quarter of a century after his mother.

We were among the last guests at Echaurren before it was forced to close due to the pandemic. Despite the strange situation we had a wonderful experience at this charming hotel. Our second floor room overlooked the church and was extremely comfortable, particularly the super king sized bed with its gorgeous bed linen. Our only quibble about the room was the strange basin design, which looked great with its very deep bowl but was impractical for a man to shave at. Our room and the whole hotel has a very crisp, clean design. During our stay the traditional restaurant was being refurbished, so the traditional menu was temporarily being served in the very smart El Portal dining room. We ate the traditional menu in our first evening and, due to cancellations because of the virus, we were the only diners. So it was an unusual experience, but the food was fabulous. My husband continues to rave about the chorizo and red bean stew. We ate the two Michelin star El Portal food on our second evening and it was stunning. My husband had the offal menu and I had the non-offal version. The first few items are served standing up at a tapas-style bar, then you move to the kitchen for the next dishes which are presented and explained by the chef. The service is friendly and approachable throughout. I had the wine flight which was very generous and added to the overall experience. The majority of the meal is served at the table and included many memorable dishes. Each diner receives a “book” of all the dishes they have had - a brilliant idea. To complete our gastronomic visit, we ate tapas in the hotel bar area on our final night - another lovely evening with simple, but very good food. Breakfast was also very good, all served at the table in our visit as there were so few guests. Ezcaray is a lovely little town, with a variety of bars and restaurants (mostly closed when we were there obviously), very pleasant to walk around. I can recommend the local honey. We also visited the Marquis de Riscal winery and enjoyed it very much. We will return to Echaurren and would recommend it wholeheartedly. We wish them a swift recovery as they reopen from the lockdown.

After walking part of the Camino, our group took a diversion to this lovely property. It was heaven! The staff was very attentive and helpful, the rooms were clean and comfortable and the town was charming. Breakfast was included and what a treat! Highly recommend this hotel and El Portal (very special and reviewed separately).

Excellent location for our cycling tour group, in a small charming town. Very pleasant staff, several excellent restaurants associated with this hotel. The rooms are spacious, very stylish, even a bit quirky. Very comfortable overall. Nice bed, quiet dark room. We really enjoyed this hotel.

Was with a group so I don't get credit for choosing this charming hotel in this charming little town. I had upgraded and had a corner room looking down the street on one side and at the ancient church the other way. Room was spotless, spacious and I slept great...ate at restaurant one evening (not the Michelin restaurant) and it was excellent. This hotel is a wonderful base for the roija region, I highly recommend it...

Styling itself as a Gourmet Hotel, and a member of Relais & Chateaux, the bar is set high. The hotel has been completely refurbished to a very high standard. The rooms are comparatively small, but perfectly large enough. Our room looked out onto the road, but the double glazing kept out all traffic noise. Parking is difficult/impossible in the town, and we booked a place in their garage (12 euros a day). Arrival was difficult as the hotel is on the main road, there is little or no space to wait to check in, and the garage is up the road and the receptionist has to guide you there. Without a place in their garage you could spent a lot of time trying to find a parking space It would be fair to say that this is a restaurant with rooms, rather than a hotel. We never found a lounge and were never told of one. There was a gym at the top of the building, but for reasons unknown was kept locked and you had to get a key from reception It is primarily there to offer accommodation to people wanting to eat at their restaurants
