Detailed Reviews
Eccentric family run hotel. Fantastic position at centre of small medieval town, with large attractive gardens alongside river and ruined abbey. Very good restaurant although a rather limited breakfast for 10 Euros. The room we had was the cheapest at 55 Euros. It was small and barely furnished with a very cramped and poorly ventilated bathroom. Overall it is worth a visit, especially if you can get one if the better rooms.

Our travel plans changed unexpectedly, and we were looking for a place to stay in the Limoux or Quillan area when we stumbled across this place and decided on a whim to check it out. What a great find!
It's a fairly large hotel in a park-like setting along the Aude River on the edge of the quaint village of Alet-des-Bains about 5 miles south of Limoux off the D-118.
The rooms are simple but clean with full bathroom facilities and all that is needed for a good night's sleep. The rooms look out over a courtyard-like area that is more like a park or over the river that runs alongside the hotel. The staff are very nice.
The restaurant is outstanding with a fantastic ambiance and excellent food and wine. It adjoins the hotel and has outstanding and friendly service. Both the hotel and the restaurant have a very traditional French village vibe that we loved.
Cannot recommend highly enough.

Third visit to this hotel over 6 or 7 years. Wonderful setting in old Bishops palace. Huge grounds, right on the river. Right next to ruined Abbey. Plenty of place to park. Big room overlooking a courtyard, with giant trees.
Restaurant is excellent as well - although their famous cassoulet was not as good as usual - over cooked if that is possible with cassoulet!
The town of Alet is a museum piece (the thermal baths are closed now) and interesting to explore. You can get a fine little walking tour from the nearby tourist office - highlights: house where Nostradamus once lived, and a Napoleonic period road sign (made of lead) giving the distance and times to major towns (by horseback). Blanquette de Limoux available nearby as well.

Stayed here for a week with a group. The grounds are stunning with an ancient monastery next door for exploring. Rooms very basic, but clean and comfortable. No A/C, but didn't need it in September. Food at the hotel was delicious,

The location, by the river and near the old abbey, was excellent. There was a very convenient restaurant there as well, and plenty of space to park the car. However, for the price of 65 euros a night for a double room - or 85 if you want to have breakfast - we stayed in much better accommodations in France. The hotel is in an old building, and there was a overpowering stale smell in the room that was difficult to get rid of - we had to spray deodorant all over the place to be able to sleep, because oppening all my lovely bags of lavander was not enough!!! Poor sound proving - we could hear the next door neighboor snoring as if he was in our bedroom.

We took a tour group to sw France, and Madame Yolande and her staff at L'Eveche were wonderful. We threw her several curves--last minute dinners, extended stays, etc.--and she handled all with efficiency and grace. Wasn't our first visit to L'Eveche, and it won't be our last.

Beautiful setting with stunning views. Unfortunately the rooms let it down - small, barely furnished, and in need of re-decoration. En suite bathroom extremely small, comprising a sit up and beg bath with wall hung shower attachment. You need to be pretty agile to get in and out! Small wash basin and loo all in very old fashioned blue. These rooms are in desparate need of renovation. Breakfast was average. The grilled trout for lunch was excellent. Would not return to stay overnight.

We stayed here only one night during a road trip in Cathars Land and we got it late night. Room and bathrooms were very small and people not very friendly but large free parking, ancient building recently restored close to medioeval church remains. A little expansive rates.

Did you ever live in an old Episcopal Palace before? This place has some athmosphere. The old and massive wooden furniture in the rooms certainly adds to it. It's paradise without TV, very quiet, a perfect hideout for a romantic weekend.
The hotel has a restaurant serving the local cuisine. It's in a park in the middle of the historical village of Alet-les-Bains. Carcassonne is about 30 km from here. The other direction you can go to the country of the Cathars. We visited the ruins of Montsegur in a day trip from here.

We were based at L' Hostellerie de l' Eveche to explore the Cathar Country. The hotel is set in the stunning grounds of the Old Bishop's Palace in Alet-les-Bains bordering the Aude River. Once you cross the river to enter the town, you are in another century.
The rooms at the hotel are basic but very clean. There is no TV in the rooms which perfectly reflects the quiet of the grounds. The only sound is that of the running river.
What really shines is the ambiance of dinner served outside under the wise auspices of an enormous, ancient tree. The food is good and plentiful. This is an area of France with hearty cooking and this is reflected in the menu. Madame oversees dinner and the delightful servers. Every day we returned to the hotel looking forward to a lengthy dinner in that beautiful setting.
On one level, this is a very basic two-star hotel; on another, a five-star experience.
