Detailed Reviews
We spent two nights at Gillespie House. The accommodations are very comfortable and Madonna was very knowledgeable about the area and the history. The waterfront location provided beautiful views and the deck was a lovely place to relax after a day of activity. On our last morning we enjoyed a hike to Hamilton Cove on the other side of the bay.

This is a great B & B located in rural Newfoundland. We enjoyed our time with the owners, Madonna and Sonny. They are friendly, accommodating, and fun to be around. The community is small and very typical of small ports - fun and friendly.
The B&B is super clean and offers a nice view of the harbour. We were there when the icebergs were close and enjoyed a great time out in the boat getting up close.
Our time in the area was suburb and we have every intention of returning, most likely next year.

We just returned from a two night stay at Gillespie House and we enjoyed every moment. The rooms were lovely, the food & service was great and the people treat you like family. Our boat tour with Sonny arranged in house by the owner Madonna was just about the best. She even joined us for a well needed break and we loved her company. Every year we try to go some where on the island we have not been before however, I feel that we will have to go back to Gillespie House and spend some more time with the good people of Fortune Harbour!

My husband and I just spent three nights at Gillespie House, Fortune Hr. It is a beautifully restored home with an interesting history. Donna, Alice and Lisa took such good care of us we hated to leave. Donna's husband, Sonny took us for a tour of the Harbour in his boat. We enjoyed the scenic hiking trails. It was a beautiful, peaceful community. The restaurant attached to the house has a wonderful view of the harbour and some of the best home cooking. It is definitely worth the drive.

We went for a drive down to Fortune Harbour with our friends for the day. They had eaten at Gillespie House Cafe before so we decided to go. I couldn't get over the fact that there was such a beautiful cafe and bnb in this beautiful rural Newfoundland town. The view from the deck was stunning and the food was delicious. Take some time off the beaten path and explore this beautiful area and this fantastic cafe.

This café is almost at the end of the road in Fortune Harbour. It sits just up from the water with nice views out the windows. We arrived just before closing but we were served in a leisurely manner and we did not feel rushed at all. The cod was delicious and the macaroni and cheese was good. Newfoundland macaroni and cheese is a bit different from what we are use to, it is literally cooked macaroni with slightly melted cheese added either in layers or put on top. The macaroni here was cooked in a white sauce with some cheese added to it. Wonderful atmosphere, homey and friendly. A definite stop if in the area.

My wife, daughter & son in law stayed for a few nights. Donna was a terrific hostess. Our meals were delicious, especially the fried cod, buttered potatoes & homemade bread. Great view of the Harbour from the restaurant. Thanks to the excellent staff for their hospitality. Sonny gave us a terrific boat tour and took us fishing. Our daughter & son in law still talk about their great time. Anytime you are in Newfoundland, Gillespie House should be a definite stay. We will definitely come back.

It's not very often that you find a place that really is a gem; an unexpected place to stay or to eat that completely bowls you over, but that is exactly how I would describe our stay at Gillespie House last night. Yes, Fortune Harbour is a long drive off the Trans Canada Highway, across difficult and admirably potholed roads. But at the end of the road you arrive at a charming little community, perched on the side of this sheltered and tranquil harbour, and at the top of the road, right on the water's edge is Gillespie Lodge. The rooms aren't big, and the menu is not particularly extensive, but the welcome is warm and embracing, the room is comfortable and peaceful and both dinner and breakfast were just delicious (with scrummy home-made bread as well). You sleep with the sounds of the water outside your window and you wake up to the tranquility of the early morning on the water, with a bald eagle flying past looking for breakfast.
I cannot describe it better than to say that we left with a lovely warm glow; having found a place that is well off the beaten track for tourists, but where you are treated like a valued visitor and given every comfort in a beautiful and charming community. Not everyone will go there - not everyone can; there are just 3 bedrooms, but those who do visit will come away refreshed and contented. This is not something that you could say for every B&B. It's a very special place.

This is a gem of an inn with breakfast and lunch or supper available. The food is great, Madonna is an excellent innkeeper and the rooms are wonderful. I especially liked the Carey room. Try the cod and mussel chowder. It's super!

Ate in the restaurant last summer with daughter and family we had come to NFLD to visit. The food was delicious and the owners were very helpful and friendly. Determined to stay there when I came back this year with my husband. Madonna was very helpful with ideas and directions to help us find links to people in the area who could help with some family history work. Food is wonderful, bed is comfortable. Good books about local history in the parlor, I even found reference in one of them to one of my ancestors. Thanks!
