Detailed Reviews
A very well appointed stylish ski hotel. Room was very well appointed, but hot and the hotel has several restaurants, public and private onsens and a well equipped gym. However, it would have been a great hotel had it cost half of what it did. It in no way warrants the extortionately high prices they charge.
At check in we were told “breakfast is very busy so you might like to consider other options” (see photo) - this seems to have been a problem since they first opened. I have never stayed at any other hotel, of any quality, which couldn’t feed its guests breakfast - and you have to pay for bed and breakfast, there is no room only option.
One day we did try the option of lunch instead - there was no choice it was tomato pasta and juice or nothing. As you will see from the photo, a child’s meal.
Also at check in we were told the room would not be cleaned daily, there would be a brief tidy, with one clean every 3 days and that water would not be provided as the tap water was drinkable. So having paid £800 per night we were greeted with what they wouldn’t be doing for us! It felt like they were taking the view that if they told us about all the things people had complained about then we would know and wouldn’t complain! Just a shame they didn’t tell us before we paid £1000s! They also couldn’t do decaf coffee.
So if money is no object and you don’t mind going out for breakfast instead of having the one you’ve paid for, and having a uncleaned bathroom for 3 days, this probably is the place for you!

Dear Nicola, Thank you for choosing to stay at Setsu Niseko and for taking valuable time to give feedback about your stay. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed many parts of your stay such as the room, the restaurants and our onsen. Indeed these are also enjoyed by many of our guests. We are sorry that you felt our room rates were high, our pricing is inline with the Niseko market and reflects our positioning within this market after extensive research. Regarding breakfast, we apologise that the service was not up to expectations. We are working to improve our offerings and waiting times and are also considering offering a room only option next winter. We hope to welcome you again to Setsu Niseko with improvements in place. Kind regards, Novea Tan Assistant Hotel Manager

We (my family of 4) stayed at Setsu for 10 nights for our first skiing adventure in Niseko. The size of the room was a big positive to allow space for ski jackets and drying clothes, (washing machine was also a big plus). The hotel itself is well positioned in the village and the shuttle bus is very useful (despite having a couple of hiccups that the hotel did quickly rectify). The design of the hotel is in line with Japanese architecture and we found it very relaxing. The onsite Rhythm ski rental is very smooth with Skis being placed in your locker and the shop being on hand for items one may have forgotten or lost (gloves etc...).
Post skiing, the Onsen was a great place to relax although the private onsen was less luxurious than imagined.
There are a range of onsite restaurants and all restaurants in town are easily accessible. There is also a handy convenience store across the road.
Everything was generally good, the only issue we faced was that the service was not what one would expect and, despite only a 'light clean' being offered, there were areas to improve with regards to cleanliness. The front desk were attentive, but issues seemed to fall between the cracks and not picked up on without 'pestering' which is not what is expected. I am sure some training of new seasonal staff can improve the product.
Breakfast had a good selection and enjoyed by the whole family.

We stayed at Setsu for a week. The hardware of the hotel is very nice. Everything is very new and clean, as would be expected for the price we paid.
Software does not work as well. The hotel was very crowded and seemed understaffed. We arrived after checkin time but were told (unapologetically) that we had to wait an hour as our room had not passed inspection by housekeeping. The two room apartment we booked was very nice, but the aircon in the second room did not work and it was quite warm and stuffy throughout our stay. The underfloor heating in the master bathroom did not work either, and although we told reception about this twice, nothing was done to fix it. Perhaps the biggest downer was that while breakfast was included in the price (and there was no option to pay a lower price excluding breakfast), the queues for breakfast every single day were horrendous. There were signs put up telling us to expect queues of up to an hour, and offering us cold bento boxes in exchange! Alternatively we could opt for lunch, but lunch was not a buffet - there was no choice of main course at all and we were just served a plate of pasta. We had to wake up at 7am every day in order to get a breakfast table and avoid the long queues which started to form by 730. When you are paying so much for the room you would expect to at least be able to pick and choose your breakfast time. I thought this was poorly managed since there were other common areas in the hotel which were totally empty at breakfast time and could have been used to cater to the large breakfast crowd.
In conclusion - nice hotel but service is not up to the very big price tag they put on a stay.

Dear Wanderwe, Thank you for choosing to stay at Setsu Niseko and for your feedback. We are happy to hear that you were happy with the hardware of our new hotel. However, we are sorry to hear about various aspects of your stay. Our check in time is 3pm and we endeavor to have the rooms ready by 3pm. If for any reason, the rooms are not ready by 3pm, we are happy to provide some complimentary refreshments. I am sorry that this was not offered to you. If you could reach out to us directly with some details, we could investigate further regarding this and also regarding the underfloor heating. Regarding the breakfast service, we are very sorry to hear about your experience and we are working to improve the operations such as waiting time, and suitable alternatives. Once again, thank you for your feedback and suggestions and we look forward to hearing from you. We also hope to have the chance to welcome you back again with our improvements. Kind regards, Novea Tan Assistant Hotel Manager

What a delight! The hotel has a great location. You are in the village so can walk to all the shops, restaurants, bars. And it is a short shuttle bus up to the Hirafu Gondola. The hotel shuttle was excellent, even late in the day we never had to wait more than a couple of minutes, great service. The hotel has high standards. Our rooms (basic studios) were large, bright, clean, comfortable and with great facilities if you want to eat/cook at home. The restaurants offer a nice variety. The Noodle bar was very popular and busy, food is delicious. Luke's ski club was great. Meli Melo offers excellent breakfast (Japanese and Western food) and food was nice at night, though a bit lacking in atmosphere. Onsen is well designed and worth using. Gym has modern equipment. This was our first time skiing in Japan, and it is unusual to find a hotel of such high quality in European resorts, so this was a delightful experience.

The facilities, the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the location, the restaurants, the quality and cleanness of the all the details in the ski-room... and also the comfort and the standard of our room was exceptional.
We often tend to be the moe difficult type of guests who often write ctitical reviews and tend to spot the weak points during our holidays as we really want to get the full worth of the value.. but Setsu have been exceptionally good and spotless.
Overall we had an excellent family trip and we have already booked it again.
We cannot recommend it enough...

There’s some weird noise (it’s like the sound when there’s renovation, or a machine is working) in my room - Studio Village. We reported to the staff at the front desk at night. A staff came up to check and told us that there’s something wrong in the whole building and could only fix it the next morning.
Then we asked if we could have a new room. He said he can only check that the next morning with the reservation team. So the whole night, we could only sleep with the noise. The staff did nothing to help.
I wrote a complaint email to the hotel on the same night becoz this customer experience is totally not acceptable and is very terrible.
The next morning the manager came up to our room and said they’ve arranged us a new room. She also apologised. But that’s it. I won’t recommend to anyone as their reaction is really slow and not the quality they should’ve provided.

Dear SJ, Thank you very much for your recent stay with us. At the same time, I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you experienced in your room during your stay. We are very sorry that we were not able to rectify the problem when it happened. We have reviewed our policies based on your experience and have made changes for future situations similar to this should they occur. As the cause of the noise was external from your room, we did require maintenance support to resolve this. I thank you for your review, and I hope the rest of your stay with us was more inline with your expectations. Kind Regards, Michiko Tamoto Hotel Manager

Great location in the heart of Hirafu. Walking distance to all the restaurants and food trucks. Although Setsu Niseko is not a ski in and out resort, they make up for it by having frequent shuttle services and having Rhythm ski rental onsite. Private ski instructors pick up and drop off onsite which makes it easy for the parents. Lawson is right across the street for quick food runs or there is shuttle service every 30 min to Kutchan station.

Great facilities including outdoor public onsen and selection of restaurant choices. Rooms with balcony that have view of Mt.Yotei (either Yotei or certain Hirafu blocks) are highly recommended. Equipped with dish washer/washing machine so suitable for long stay if needed. Easy access to slopes/main street, looking forward to winter addition of Rhythm/Ski Lockers and new dining options!

A new hotel in Niseko just opened this in 2022.
We had two bed room which was large enough for 2 kids and 2 adults, and we've got nice Yotei Mt view on sunny day so the view was stunning.
Though, there were several issues with the hotel when we stayed there.
Here are pros and cons.
Pros:
1. Large and new room with kitchen and washing machine, convenient for longer stay.
2. Depending on room though, view was stunning.
3. Great dining options except breakfast.
4. Many facilities such as onsen, yoga studio and meeting room.
5. Convenient store is located right in front.
Cons:
1. I needed go to lobby to pick up even a toothbrush as there was no bath amenities at all in the room. Only shampoo and soap were provided.
2. The bed was hard for me. Also the bed linen was so hard. I couldn't sleep.
3. The entire hotel was so hot!
In public area was so hot as it was sunny day? I heard they can't turn on aircon after summer? The room was too hot even after turning off the heater.
4. Breakfast was terrible. We waited for 40 mins! The hotel was so not ready for having more than 10 groups and as it was a holiday, they just couldn't handle all of us.
My kids were starving and we kinds wasted our time just waiting for our food.

Dear brat_kids_club, Thank you very much for choosing to stay with us. I am glad to know you enjoyed the view from your room and hotel facilities. As part of our commitment to reduce waste and protect the environment, Setsu Niseko has developed policies that help reduce waste whilst maintaining a good customer experience. Bath amenities such as toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, cotton buds, cotton pads, razor, shower cap and more are available upon request and we encourage our guests to bring their own. We are of course happy to provide standard items should you forget to bring them. You may request these items from our inroom tablets in your suite, and we are happy to deliver to your room once requested. Also, bottled water is not provided in all suites to minimise waste and because the tap water is clean and drinkable in Niseko. Body soap, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, tea and Nespresso coffee capsules is provided in all suites. Thank you for your feedback about the bedding and I am very sorry to hear that you did not have a comfortable night with our bedding. Our mattress is Serta, and we believe that we have sourced good quality linen from our linen supplier that is comfortable for our guests. Regarding the air conditioning system, only heating is operational in guestrooms and public areas once the temperature drops in autumn and winter. To help manage this, we kindly ask our guests to turn off the heating in their suite if they feel it is too warm, and also to get fresh air by opening the window. My apologies for the wait for the breakfast. I will make sure to address your feedback to our restaurant team for the improvement. Thank you very much for your valuable feedback, and we look forward to welcoming you back on your next trip to Niseko. Kind Regards, Michiko Tamoto Hotel Manager

The property provides limited services despite the ultra high price tag. Note the following:
1. It’s not ski in ski out
2. Expect to get lift passes by yourself
3. Private transfers are provided by 3rd party and you will have to wait for 2 hours at the airport
4. Guests do not have priority access to restaurants on site - they’re fully booked by people from outside the property. Without advanced booking from months ahead, you only get ramen from the same restaurant every night.
5. Ski lessons are also not guaranteed. Asked 2 weeks in advance but all morning lessons already booked out.
Should I know that they could pretty much only provide rooms, I would have booked an Airbnb + hire my private chauffeur. Would have cost less and have better experiences.

Responded 4 weeks ago
Dear Ms Charlotte, Thank you for taking time to leave a review regarding your upcoming stay. We are sad to see that you are not satisfied with the service that is provided to you before your arrival. Our hotel is indeed not a ski in ski out resort but we provide a shuttle that departs every 20 minutes to the ski resort which is 2 minutes drive away. We hope you will see how convenient this is after you arrive to the hotel. You are right that many activities in Niseko are booked out in advance. For that reason, we push for our guests to make early bookings up to months in advance but it appears that your accommodation was booked one week ago hence many activities are already booked out. However, I am glad to see that we still managed to find some availability for ski lessons and booked that for you. Regarding lift passes, we do recommend that guests book through the ski resort website to enjoy flexibility and the online discount but we are happy to help if you are alright with the rack price option without discount. Please contact us if you wish to do so. Regarding your transfer request, as your request is during the peak season, many of our taxi suppliers ran out of availability and we apologise that we could only find one which would incur a waiting time at the airport. We do give preference for dinner bookings at our restaurants however this priority opened up in September and in October they have opened up to the public. As the 2 restaurants that you requested are small restaurants with about only 10 seats, they fill up quickly especially over the Christmas period. We also have other in house restaurants such as our main dining restaurant that may have some availability. We are also located near many restaurants within walking distance of 5-10 minutes. Please feel free to reach out to us if you would like to dine at these restaurants. We hope you will have an enjoyable winter holiday in Niseko after your arrival, there has been a tremendous amount of snow. Kind regards, Novea Tan Assistant Hotel Manager
