Even as the snowflakes start to fall, adding powder to the slopes outside, Kimamaya Boutique Hotel remains toasty-warm; a cocoon upon the mountainside. Kimamaya is the Japanese word for ‘be yourself’ and here, you can do just that. Jazz music floats through the homely Living Lounge as your bare feet press against the timber flooring, and all that’s left to worry about is which wine you’ll sip as you laze by the fireplace. The vintages served here come from a vineyard owned by the family of Nicolas Gontard, who renovated this nine-room retreat to help guests get closer to the beauty of Niseko, one of Japan’s most popular ski resorts. But Kimamaya Boutique Hotel’s mountain location isn’t only appealing in winter. In the summer and fall, pristine trails and mountain biking tracks snake through the surrounding pine forests.
We stayed here for 5 nights and loved it! The location is perfect with a short walk to all restaurants/bars and supermarkets. Miki and John were incredible hosts we cannot speak more highly of them! They also give you a mobile phone so you can call them to be picked up from the various chairlifts/gondolas and also drop you up there in the morning! They also booked all of our restaurants and transfers. Hotel is super cool and very modern. The adjacent hotel is in the shape of an old Hokkaido barn and is great for breakfast and dinner as part of the hotel. A very cool and authentic boutique hotel that I highly recommend!

We stayed at Kimamaya for the second time this year for a reason - it is GREAT. If you are looking for a big hotel with bellmen and fancy facilities and group tours, this is not for you. But, if you want a more personal, yet still pretty amazing experience then you NEED to stay here. It only has a few rooms, which means that the staff is really able to spend quality time helping each and every guest with whatever they need (reservations, rides to/from the ski lifts, etc). The place itself is very nice and feels a bit like a big (and expensive) house. Super cozy rooms, public areas to relax, and a restaurant (with great free breakfast) right next door, no need to change out of pajamas and slippers! Peter and the staff are excellent and will really do their best to help you have…

This is our third time staying at The Kimamaya. We love everything about this very special hotel for all the great reasons previous guests have already mentioned. Thanks to Peter and Miki for making our stay special (yet again).

Fabulous place with great service and beautifully presented. The beds are super comfortable, rooms are big for Japan and the atmosphere very special. You have access to hot baths and massage. Highly recommended.

My husband and I stayed here for a long summer weekend in Niseko. The architecture looked modern and cozy online, but it was even more impressive in person as were the level of service and detail we received. I suppose with only 9 rooms, the staff is able to provide personalized service! We were greeted by the friendly manager, Peter, who was super hospitable – showing us amenities in the hotel and making great recommendations on activities and restaurants in the area. ROOM: We stayed in the Alpine Room and though it is small, it was very comfortable and included lots of thoughtful touches like a mini fridge, apple TV and DVD player, bathrobes, and storage space. The bathroom had a beautiful walk-in shower, fancy electronic toilet and towel warming rack. LOCATION: The hotel…

My husband and I were lucky enough to stay at Kimamaya for our honeymoon in March/April. It's the little things that make this place so amazing, like the shuttle runs to and from the mountain, friendly chats with the lovely hosts Peter and Morino, and even some complimentary bubbles for the first night of our honeymoon! We truly couldn't fault this place and can't wait to come back.

Stayed in a loft apartment in February 2016, there were four of us. Not a huge amount of space, but really comfortable and all that we needed. The friendliness and customer service at the Kimamaya is phenomenal - Paul and Kimomo are absolutely lovely and were so helpful with restaurant tips and bookings. They gave us a phone that we could use to call to be picked up from the ski fields and they were more than happy to drop us off in the mornings, even though the stop for the bus to the ski fields is directly opposite the hotel. We had breakfast at the BARN attached to the Kimamaya each morning, what a lovely way to start the day. You can soak in one their two small onsens at the end of the day - so relaxing. Paul and Kimomo host a welcome evening for guests each week - what an…

Every stay in kimamaya is an experience on its own, yet really feels like home! The rooms are so comfortable that it's sometimes difficult to drag yourself out to ski ;) Special thanks to Peter and Morino (and Nicolas!) for taking such good care of us and for helping my folks who are non-skiers enjoy Hirafu. ありがとう, Osaka-san for getting us to and from the lifts too. Already planning my next trip back!
