I stayed in a dorm where the beds are what I would call halfway between capsules and regular bunk beds. They provide much more privacy than regular bunk beds, but don't have things like build in TVs, radios, alarm clocks that capsules might have. They are paneled with light wood, cosy, with a curtain at the end where your feet are for extra privacy. Each bed area has its own light and USB charging point, as well as a lockable storage box just behind your head. I don't usually stay in dorm rooms as I am a light sleeper but I was lucky in that everyone was considerate, there was no one being loud. The only issue I had was that as I was close to the air-con, it was very hot, but the friendly reception girl allowed me to change my bed. The showers are plentiful and very clean, in fact every where was very clean. They also have a good recycling systems, which seems to be standard throughout the country. You must put sheets on your own bed, which I know some people don't like, but it's really not so much hassle. I had breakfast included, served by some very friendly and polite ladies. I thought it was tasty, but I wish there was more variety. The location is excellent - it's in Kutchan, a short walk from the railway station. I came by train from Sapporo station, changing at Otaru, which was very convenient. There are many good restaurants a short walk away, but they do close early. Also 7-11s selling anything and everything including very good food if the restaurants are already closed. You can also rent skiing/snowboarding equipment nearby at Boom Sports. Kutchan is much less touristy than Hirafu/Niseko, so definitely a more authentic experience staying here, which is exactly what I was looking for. There is a bus from the nearby train station that will take you directly to Hirafu for the pistes. So, I would highly recommend Smart Hotel if you're looking for good value accommodation in a convenient location.
