Japan, the alternative winter sports world. Sahoro is a place of refinement, in full Japanese style. The microclimate that reigns over the island of Hokkaido, which has less rainfall and is cooler than the rest of Japan, ensures optimal snow cover for an intense skiing experience. And after all that skiing, revival is guaranteed, with the choice between Ofuro, traditional Japanese hot baths, and Canadian outdoor baths. Indoors you will find a heated swimming pool, jacuzzi and saunas.

Hotel's Favourite
5.0 of 5 bubbles
Our family of 4 have stayed in Tomamu as well, both are excellent and well-run properties but the kids voted Sahoro their favourite hotel experience ever and they have excellent taste, so here are the main points!

1) Smooth, efficient welcome process with QR codes to scan that gave access to resort information, the ski instructors and our lovely host Miku (more on her later) so any questions or practicalities were easily handled that way versus having to do everything in person. We were shown around the hotel facilities and the room immediately and given the scale of the property that meant we were good to go straightaway (Tomamu is huge in comparison…)

2) Plenty of incidental things to do, a good gym, table tennis tables, pool tables, badminton/squash courts and a climbing wall… so in between skiing and other entertainment we found plenty to do. There were also tournaments organised almost every day that let the kids win prizes and socialise, very fun atmosphere. The spa is a nice addition in Sahoro vs Tomamu, and the outdoor hot pool is a fun thing to try when it is not crowded!

3) I am not a big fan of buffets generally but both this and Tomamu were very good, though for sure the scale of the offering in Tomamu is hard to beat. Nevertheless, a range of different cuisine choices, enough variety every day and little twists to break the monotony like light shows, fancy dress etc. Unlike some other people’s reviews I can testify the heavily worked ice cream machine never broke down! And Mina Mina (the separate hotpot restaurant) was excellent, particularly the Kegani crab and shabu shabu, and the service was really good, attentive to adjusting the air conditioning to manage the smokiness of the table and constantly there to help; in fact the team in the buffet were incredibly efficient as well, empty dishes would disappear in a blink of an eye, quite a logistical feat. Free seating yes, but very easy to find a place, in Tomamu staff walked us to a table but honestly I prefer choosing our own.

4) Room was a suite, plenty of space for all of us, two bathrooms and a great mountain view within easy walking distance of everything in the hotel. Recommended option for a family, slept really well after full and eventful days on the slopes! Of course cleanliness and service, as expected, excellent, we had the option of room service breakfast as well which was a nice option albeit the room is not designed specifically as a dining area.

5) Skiing: booked a lot of things online prior from the equipment to lessons… very smooth to get measured for the gear, it is taken down to where it needs to be for the kids the next day, GO helped the adults with our locker. Queues were very manageable, I would say this is the biggest difference with Tomamu, the scale of the resort and the crowds… Sahoro just felt like everything was simpler to get done and the staff were more personally helpful. The group lessons for the kids were very well-organised, a daunting logistical task for the staff but they remembered the kids’ names and made them feel welcome immediately… and the speed with which the kids made progress was amazing, I watched one Panda group lesson with Ella and she was encouraging, engaged and attentive throughout. I am not a snowsport expert (basketball injury!) so cannot comment on the difficulty of the slopes but my wife and kids loved every minute of the skiing and the snow quality was fantastic. One brilliant feature in Sahoro that unfortunately Tomamu did not have when we were there is the kids’ prize-giving ceremony where they get awarded badges depending on their ski achievements and it is a really lovely event where they get called on stage and the ski instructors are all there to take fun photos with them and make them feel awesome. Very nice touch by Stefan and the other ski managers.

6) Entertainment, have to say both resorts were great but the layout in Sahoro is a little more effective with the theatre leading onto the bar rather than being one multi-purpose room. That meant the evening could naturally segue between kids’ time and adults’ time but regardless the atmosphere was fun and kids-friendly. The week saw a wide range of shows, from an invited band (great range of songs), local drum group (saw them at Tomamu as well, excellent), to the obligatory Club Med kids’ show where the young ones got to perform for all of us and then enjoy a candy party… the surprise was the professionalism of the GO shows. Tomamu had a few dedicated dancers and gymnasts… Sahoro we got to see so many more familiar faces show their talents and the level of the choreography, the creativity of the concepts (k-pop vs rock, music through the decades starring the CDV) was top-notch. Extremely professional performance level and really cool to see GOs that worked so hard during the day behind the reception or teaching skiing show up and perform like stars for everyone’s enjoyment.

7) the last general area is management and co-ordination before I get into specific GOs. Brendan the CDV runs a tight and harmonious ship, the staff across the board are energetic, friendly, engaging and particularly kind and helpful with kids, the service levels are crisp and consistent… there are few if any weak links. The kids’ club is organized chaos in the morning but everything is in its place, all the kids’ things are exactly where they need to be, the stickers have been changed to reflect ski promotions, the numbers are checked and no kids left behind. I already mentioned the extremely high level of the performances, and the commitment of the staff across the board is what is impressive, they work so hard during the day but then to have the energy levels to perform for the guests and then stick around for a few drinks or even to play with the kids, day after day before it starts all over again, it is exhausting to think about! As for mentality, there was a minor ski accident during our stay and I noticed Brendan came back from his one off day to help co-ordinate the ambulance and logistics. So extremely high levels of consistency and commitment from the staff to the guest experience and that is all about the working culture. I will mention more individual details when I discuss GOs but the final impression as the buses leave is not only of everyone stood outside waving but all along the exit road GOs are holding flags on both sides of the bus and waving as well. Details, but they add up and they matter, so clearly this is a very well managed facility from the top down.

Finally, and most importantly, to some of the individuals that helped make our stay so special

Miku, our amazing host who was always there with a smile, kind word, attention and a hug for the kids, helped seamlessly manage logistics for us via WhatsApp, danced her heart out in the shows, got me into the karaoke queue and went out of her way to arrange a kids’ medicine to be purchased and delivered back to us the same day we asked. She is a gem and did a fantastic job embodying the Club Med spirit from the moment we arrived at the hotel to waving us goodbye at the end. My kids asked if she was our friend now :-)

Bara and Pauline, two brilliant ski instructors for the kids, they made really amazing progress together (the kids went from Panda/Dragon to Trident 1 and 2 by the end of the week, largely credit to the girls) and were so kind and friendly and tailored their approach to each child. The kids were thrilled by little details: after the boys got promoted in their lesson, even though their working day was over the girls ran to the stage to make sure the prize ceremony organisers knew to give my kids the right badges. And they made sure we were all in the same team together for quiz night and patiently took photos together… a really warm family atmosphere and excellent instruction, thank you so much! The kids may have developed a lifelong interest in skiing from these experiences…

Logan, Tanjun and Jason, the heart and soul of the entertainment group, from leading to singing to choreography, they were always visible, always engaging with guests and had a great level of positive energy that no doubt inspired the high level of performance every night. They are all very talented, outgoing and make the entertainment program so engaging for young and old alike. Keep up the great work and keep smiling!

——

In summary, a fantastic week across all levels, one of the best family holidays we could recommend without reservation - we originally tried to return to Tomamu but it was full and we are so glad it turned out to be Sahoro this time, a smaller, more tightly knit, more personalised and warm experience that we will definitely return to at first opportunity (I was already being pressurised to book for Christmas by the kids on the plane home!). Well done and thank you to Brendan and all the GOs!

My fifth year in a row at Club Med Sahoro and this must have been the best year yet - despite the dismal snow conditions. The staff are becoming like old friends. I want to make special mention of Niko, a Bulgarian ski instructor, who is such a pleasure to be around and great at explaining ski technique, avalanche profiling, meteorology, you name it - he probably knows it. I hope he returns next year because I learnt so much from him and I now have a great respect for the Bulgarian ski method!

It was great to see Tarl the bartender again - probably one of the best bartenders I've ever met who knows so much about his craft. I really enjoyed his special blends he would serve up after a day of skiing, late afternoon. I appreciate when people take pride in their work, like Tarl and Niko.

Thanks to Ollie and Finn, who took great care of our kids, out in the snow and at meal times too. In previous years, it seems ski/snowboard instructors were changed on a daily basis, which I never liked because there was no continuity in instruction. I understand it's difficult to manage all guests' requests. So this year, we were very happy that most of the time, we got the instructor we'd requested.

The buffet again was great and whoever made the pizza needs to be a permanent fixture because it was the best pizza I've had in years. The family really enjoyed watching Cameron in the shows. Brendan, head of village, is hilarious. The only drawback was the shows seemed a lot tamer this year. My kids really missed skits, such as street fighter and kill the chicken. I'm sure it's difficult to please everyone, but if we react to every complaint about every show, are we going to be left with bland, forgettable entertainment? I wonder how many people have complaints about certain skits, compared to the thousands of others who enjoyed the show but said nothing?

The rooms are renovated and dry lockers are now provided for each room to store all gear. I hope the onsens are next on the renovation list and more hair dryers will be provided in there.

This is a great resort for families and we always felt 100% assured that our children were safe while having free rein to explore.

This was my first all inclusive resort experience and Club Med Sahoro was above and beyond what I was expecting. The number of guest were down considerably compared to the norm (due to Coronavirus) however the food was varied and delicious, the entertainment was engaging and staff were extremely friendly and helpful all over the resort. The ski lockers are secure (locked with your wristband) and close to door to access the slopes. The Sahoro ski resort has a good mixture of terrain and having the lessons included in your stay is a fantastic bonus. All the facilities are within a very short walking distance inside and the recent renovations really make the place shine. Whilst the pool wasn't open during my stay, I will 100% be back for another winter in the future.

We were a big group, with 4 families overlapping our stay over a period of 10+ days.
Birkan (manager of restaurants) did a excellent and exceeding our expectations. He helped to reserve tables for our group and someone you must to know! We followed him from Club Med Tomamu ( in dec 2018). Kudos to him. He is always busy but still manage to meet all our requests.
All the restaurants and bar staff who worked tirelessly to make sure all guests are comfortable.
Joy Young was good in helping us in our room upgrade when we found our original room too small ( uograde comes at a cost)l. I think she was empowered ( which is an excellent characteristic)
Lastly a must try is their white chocolate bread, at lunch times. Didn’t help my waistline but January is for dieting!
The standard rooms are a bit small so if you like space, do choose the tatami room. We are a family of 3 with a young daughter.

I have always heard about the ClubMed experience and indeed it was a wonderful ClubMed experience for myself and my family and friends. It was made better with the snowboarding instructors and GOs we encountered. The rooms were big and comfortable. The resort was very clean.

Button welcomed us on the first day and was professional and clear in her briefing.

I met Miltos as my snowboarding instructor for my first day and he made it such a great experience. He was patient and generous with his tips and gave me so much confidence in my riding.

The next few days that followed, I had Cameron who was a charismatic, encouraging and amazing snowboarding instructor.

We met up with Greg, Justin, Shamay and Ronex who were Ski/Snowboarding instructors for our group and they were professional in what they did and were always ready to assist us and help us.

The Mini Club was also amazing. The GOs, Jasmine, Fiona, Gauthier and the entire team were always welcoming and friendly although my daughter was shy and very selective of the activities she took part in but they never turned her away and always welcomed her. After their events/performances, i have noticed the GOs washing the toys at night and getting ready for the next day.

The Ski instructors at the Mini Club were also so pleasant.
We met Sonny, who willingly came up to comfort my daughter who was crying and tried to get her to participate.
We also met Finn, who was not my daughter's instructor but who noticed my daughter crying during lessons and every time he passes her in the resort, he would say "hi" to her. Simple gestures like that mean a lot.

Big thank you to the entire Restaurant crew. Birkan, Vincent, Subi, Charles and the pastry chef who dealt so patiently with my daughter's dairy allergy. She actually had so many options prepared specially for her.

Lastly, in view of the Covid-19, it was nice to see that sanitisers were placed around the resort.

The only down side i had was the Dryers at the laundry area that didn't seem to do the work. Took 4-5 cycles of drying which amounted to more than an hour for a small load to dry.

Overall, kudos to the entire team at ClubMed for all the hardwork and effort they put in to make it such a wonderful experience for the guests. General Manager, Brendan and the other Managers were amazing and so hands-on, always around to ensure a great experience. They have done a great job leading this entire ClubMed Sahoro team. Thank you so much!

My wife and I were part of a large group which incl children from Newcastle NSW Australia. Sahoro was brilliant in all aspects - location ski in ski out, accommodation; food (ah! the food); bar; entertainment and services. Everywhere we went we were warmly greeted by all staff from the GM down and who all went the extra mile to make our stay enjoyable. Special mention to ski instructors Zlatan and Greg who always made our day challenging and fun whilst keeping our safety paramount; Soy, Guest Relations Mgr, who always went out of way to greet us and say hello and the Bar staff who looked after our large group second to none We particularly liked the special little touches add on's like a golliwog jumping out from under a cloche at lunchtime! GM Brendan has a exceptional team behind him. Only negative are the exorbitant charges for ski hire ($92 per day for out performance skis); photo date ($25 per image); Spa and Boutique. Bring along your own skis and boots if you can!

We are a family with 2 kids under 10. This is the 1st time we join the Club Med & the service exceeds my expectation. Saharo is not a big resort but with many facilities to offer for adults and kids. The disappointing thing is the ofuro is too hot that i cannot even dip my foot in. Also, i am confused with the heating in the room which later i found out the red button means heat is on while green means cold air. The heat temp is too warm & dry for the room. The menu at the restaurant changes everyday. I am happy to stick with buffet for every meals which i never feel tired of. The food is so fresh & refilled quickly. The staff are nice & always there to greet you with a warm welcome. As for the ski school, the instructors observe your progress and rate you so you won't be in the wrong class. I was managed to ski down the slope in the 3rd day where i am satisfied enough as a beginner. My kids do enjoy very much the ski lessons too. I will come back to Saharo for sure.

A huge thank you to restaurant manager Birkan, he was absolutely amazing and great fun! In particular a special thanks goes to chefs Subì and Charles for making our trip to Club Med Sahoro easy and delicious. We really struggle to find any gluten free food in Japan (ramen/udon/soba all contain wheat, sushi contains barley vinegar and everything else has soy sauce (wheat) in it! But we can safely say all our meals were really well catered, free of gluten and varied thanks to Birkan, Subì and Charles.
The resort itself is on the old side but our tatami room was stylishly and thoughtfully renovated with lots of storage. Our towels were replaced twice a day which was a welcome bonus.
There wasn’t much powder but skiing the groomed runs was great fun and it’s truly ski in/out with good locker space. Night skiing was close and convenient compared to Club Med Tomamu. Thanks again to the whole team for all their help!

My family has been to various Club Med resorts over the past 10 years. Having spent the last 2 winters at Club Med Tomamu, we decided to try Sahoro as it came recommended by many friends.

Overall, it was an excellent trip!

Special commendations to Chef de Village Brendan, he has such amazing energy and a great sense of humour!

We felt that compared to Tomamu, the standard of ski and snowboard instruction was higher at Sahoro. Ski instructor Neff is fantastic! She gave very good advice, held high standards, and yet made lessons enjoyable. I also had lessons with Kaji and Zlatan, both were also wonderful!

Ski instructor Nikko was my son’s Star 6 instructor, he really enjoyed his time with Nikko. Nikko gave them challenging things to do, yet made sure the kids stayed safe while having loads of fun! My 2 younger children also loved Matt and Patrick at the Kids Club.

My husband commends Snowboarding instructor Sharmay, she gave excellent instruction that was easy to understand and improved his snowboarding ability.

Thank you also to Soy, who was the guest relations officer assigned to my family. She is friendly and prompt in answering queries.

Sahoro is a smaller resort than Tomamu, and recently refurbished. The only small drawback is the lack of interconnecting rooms, and the 2 Junior Family Superior Rooms that we booked for 5 of us were small compared to the Interconnecting Triple rooms that we had in Tomamu. My children are aged 13, 9 and 7 years, so it was a little squeezy in the rooms. We barely had space to open our luggages or hang up our ski gear. But despite the space limitation, the rooms were clean and comfortable, and had all the necessary amenities.

We had a really wonderful stay, and enjoyed the nightly entertainment (great effort by all the performing GOs, very well-organized by the GO in-charge of entertainment, sorry I can’t remember his name, he is one funny guy!)

A huge thank you to one and all at Club Med Sahoro :)

We went back to Club Med Sahoro for a second time during the CNY Holidays. We started off with a bit of a hiccup since our flight from Singapore to Tokyo was delayed and we had to take a later flight to Obihiro. On the way, I dropped the Club Med Singapore office an email at askme.sg@clubmedcustomerservice.com that our flight was delayed, but evidently that email address is not tracked real time since there was no car waiting for us at Obihiro airport. A quick call to the resort later, this was quickly sorted out, and within 15 mins a car arrived to pick us up. Then it was onward and away to the resort. On arrival, the check in formalities were efficiently handled and we had very similar double rooms as last time, though I think the view this time (on the opposite side) is a bit better. Arriving later in the ski season, the snow was better ( but apparently less than expected for this time of the year) and most of the chair lifts were operating. Then it was just 4 days of skiing. Had Ce Ce as my instructor for the group lessons for 3 out of the 4 days and found her to be very good. Her style of coaching was well suited to my style of learning. Very precise instructions for each student with feedback on execution. The kids did snowboarding and everyone was very happy with their progress. Outside skiing, the staff was very helpful as usual. Since my birthday fell within this holiday period, they organised a birthday cake for me which was a pleasant surprise. All in all, am very satisfied and have already booked for next year.
