Seems to be great for families and groups, however, as a couple searching calm, it didn’t meet our needs in that area.

After a particularly dry and unfriendly “welcome” from a mature lady of the property, we were relieved to meet Teresa and Lorenzo (and later Isabella), whose approach made us feel more like welcome guests.

The studio accommodation was basic - no oven, and of the gas & electric hot plates only the gas was working (we were told this was due to some local policy), no cooking smell extractor and a noisy fridge. We needed to ask for two damaged/dirty cooking pans to be replaced - they were replaced quite quickly.

It was a surprise to learn that the bed with its mosquito net, that we had seen in photos, was purely ornamental - due to the design of the net, it left very large gaps for mosquitos to come and feast on us during the night.

The pool area is very nice, however, the calm was often spoilt by loud group-conversations or people using the telephone and talking at a volume that seemed to indicate the users had understood that they need to shout at a level proportional to the distance from their interlocutor to share their intimate problems with all those around the pool. We were also unfortunate that there was some kind of marriage celebration for a few days and the ladies attending that were often loud.

The setting is picturesque, very close to the beautiful town of Arezzo.
The bed was very comfortable.
The breakfast was great value, with a variety to choose from, and eaten in a very nice outdoor setting.

At the end of our stay, when we mentioned the tired and basic state of the studio to Isabella, she told us the studio was soon to be renovated.

If we had met Isabella at the start and heard about the situation of the accommodation, we would have been a lot more understanding. I would like to believe that others going there would have a better accommodation experience, following renovations, as the place certainly has good potential to please.

All that said, I repeat it is probably great for families.

Lorenzo led an interesting tour of the small facilities which showed how modern winemaking had become in a very traditional historic industry. His English is very good and appreciated as my Italian was wanting and his knowledge was extensive. The wines were of excellent quality and ranged from whites, rose to reds. My favourite was the Chianti Reserve and at 12 euros I felt this was great value. Worth a visit and you can also stay there. Great rooms and a swimming pool.

During our stay on Il Palazzo we had two very nice wine tastings. Thanks to Lorenzo’s enthusiastic presentation we enjoyed the selection of wines (white, rosé, red and Vin Santo, a desert wine) very much. Some food was offered and on one occasion even a proper four course meal was served. We could taste how well which wine goes with antipasti, pasta, cinghiale and dolce. Lorenzo did not only entertain us with stories about food and wine, but he actually cooked most of the dishes himself – naturally with products from the farm’s garden and the farm’s olive trees and vineyards. Finally we were shown around the vinery and Lorenzo told us about the stages of wine making and what makes the difference between a simple Chianti and a fully developed Chianti Riserva. Thanks for the nice events!

We had a perfect summer on Il Palazzo and we felt like in paradise. On our arrival we were heartily welcomed by a member of the De Sabbato family. The apartments are nicely scattered over the wide ground and equipped with what is needed for some relaxing days or even weeks. They are air conditioned, so that you can sleep well at night. You can sunbath near the pool or put your sunlounger at some distance under one of the many olive trees and enjoy the view over the vineyards towards Arezzo and its cathedral. Children can have their fun in the pool or on the ground. Once a week the guests are invited to a wine tasting. A special selection of the wines are presented accompanied by a taste of Tuscan food such as formagio, prosciutto and pane. The wines or on sale in the Cantina.
