This is the second time we’ve stayed here, we stayed last year after the Cheltenham Festival and again yesterday evening. Good points - Lovely, Cosy room in regards to decor, great quality tea & coffee, great powerful shower, Wi-Fi, nice towels, free and ample parking, friendly staff and fantastic breakfast! A few little points that weren’t great - Bed was a little hard for our personal preference, there was no milk when we arrived in our room so had to go back (which is outside) to the bar in horrid weather, bar closed very early and kitchen was closed by 9pm - we had a superb meal last year and was hoping for the same, wasn’t too impressed at the suggestion of a kebab shop down the road either. We booked through booking.com and as Butcombe loyalty members we made a mistake there, but the system is a little too much. Our payment failed at 7am on day of stay (we booked pay on arrival) it was due to a card issue I had, but the payment was attempted around 6 times more that day, I contacted the hotel to explain twice and was called around 20 minutes after I had called to see what was happening. Ridiculously great value and the small points mentioned wouldn’t stop us staying again. Highlight was definitely breakfast! Lovely hot pastries, probably some of the best sourdough I’ve tasted and quality produce (no beans in the picture as I hate them! But it comes with beans and black pudding too) friendly service at breakfast too!…
Millie and Ellie were friendly and very helpful when we arrived just before closing time. Millie even posted some cards for me on her way home! Having been assured that the breakfast would be available gluten free I was disappointed to be told the sausages contained gluten. The lady serving breakfast was also very helpful. Nice room but there was a lamp in our room that didn’t work and the shower screen was off the runners.
We arrived later than we expected - we were greeted by Ollie who couldn't have been more helpful. We asked if we were too late to eat. He thought we might be but checked with the kitchen and came back to us to say we could have main courses which is all we wanted. The Butcombe beer they keep is VERY good, and so was the food. Rooms are situated in a separate block behind the pub. Our room seemed fairly new and was lovely with a bathroom with a powerful shower.
Tasty Sunday lunch. Selected this pub as a meeting point between Reading and Cheltenham and we’re really glad we did. Four of us plus baby. We all had Sunday roast lunch. Good portions of beef, pork and chicken. Well cooked food, could have done with more veg and more crackling with the pork. Sticky toffee pudding was lovely. Two of us had cheese and biscuits, which at £10.95 per person was disappointing as it consisted of a modest cheese portion and four small crackers. Could of asked for more, but we shouldn’t have needed to.
We stayed over on the way back home from Cardiff to break the car journey. This Inn was highlighted on Google as one of the best in the area, so we thought we would give it a go. From the moment we walked through the door, the atmosphere was one of comfort and relaxation, nothing seemed to be any trouble from the young lady who checked us in. We got to our room and it was a good size, with every amenity you could need, including a decent size TV and home made biscuits left for us. Room was spotless and the cleaning staff must be some of the best available. We readied ourselves for an evening in the restaurant and we were immediately made to feel welcome, It wasn't over busy for a Saturday evening, but busy enough for us to be part of the local community for an evening, which was lovely. Food was absolutely outstanding, everything freshly cooked and presented beautifully. We shared our plates between us to savour everything we had ordered, the pie was one of the best we'd ever had. We were looking forward to breakfast after this experience. In the morning, we both felt like the bed was very firm, we normally like something a little more gentle for our backs, but we both had enough sleep and were ready for the day ahead and the drive back to North Essex. Breakfast excelled as we expected and we left the table feeling full and satisfied. The home made bread is something to write home about and went perfectly with the high quality food. Check in and check out is done online and makes things really easy. If you aren't able to do this, the old fashioned way is still carried out. Rooms are all on ground level in a separate building next to the pub, so disabled persons can easily book with confidence. Ramps for wheelchair users are between buildings. Negatives: No view from the rooms, hard bed. Thank you to all the staff who made our visit a lovely one. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Cardiff. …
Good value for money, dog friendly and very tasty breakfast in the morning with gluten free options we had dinner in the evening with very tasty gluten free fish and chips, friendly helpful staff and pretty country pub feel. Would definitely stay here again and recommend this venue to others. Only suggestion I could make is perhaps the gluten free options could be listed on the main menu however there was another menu with allergens written on and staff helpful with this.
Good value for a Saturday night away, room 10 was large & clean hot shower, quiet, my only criticism of the room is that the curtains are not thick enough / well fitting to keep the light from the adjacent spot light out of the room, staff were pleasant in the bar, food standard fair, beer was good, nice fire , breakfast was very good though, I do concur with other comments 10% service charge on food, personally don't agree with that practice but didn't get a choice.
Visited the venue as a last minute booking but so glad we did. From the minute we arrived we were made feel totally welcome by Olly. Registration was pretty instant and our room, in the annex building, was spotless and already warm as we entered. We dropped our bags and returned to the bar which had a great selection of the brewers own produce as well as a wide spread of top end providers product so very much something for everyone! We pretty much stayed in the bar through to a table reservation and found a number of daily offers in the menu that included 2 Flat Iron Steak Dinners with a battle of Malbec which we ordered. The food produce was without doubt top end and the wine choice was also excellent. And all that for £45.00 for the two of us….. fabulous value for money. We then retired to bed and had a free day nights sleep on a very comfortable bed. We awoke showered and went over to the restaurant for breakfast that was included in the room rate. Again, the food was great and the service exceptional. All in all, this is a real easy place for me to recommend to all if you are lucky enough to get a room!!!!!! Enjoy Guys!!!!…
We had a family meal there, good food (nice to have a few different options). It has a lovely atmosphere. Very cosy. Loved the fireplace. Friendly staff. Would definitely recommend this pub to friends and family.
Best food ever but 10% added to bill, service charge in a pub no way ever, what a rip off ,they do a deal during the week 2 x steak meals bottle of wine ok ,but we already purchased drinks at the bar on open credit but do not expect 10% on that too.In all my 69 years have never paid for service via credit card extremely disappointed.
