Wow - where to begin! We arrived at Windhoek Airport and were met by Schalk. Although the drive from Windhoek to the Lodge is about 4 hours, the time flew as Schalk talked with us, answered our many questions and was a wealth of information.
When we arrived at the Lodge, owners Karla and Justus were there to greet and welcome us! They showed us to our rooms and had our luggage brought up so we could unpack and relax for a bit before dinner.
Dinner - was amazing!! Each night we eat outside at a table with full table cloth and everything you’d expect to have at an indoor restaurant. Next to the table is a fire pit which serves three purposes: the burnt wood produces the coals from which the dinner is cooked on Dutch ovens; the coals are shoveled and placed under each chair if the evening air is cool; and the fire is mesmerizing. The wait staff take your beverage requests (we don’t drink alcohol, but a selection of beer, wine and alcohol is available). While eating an appetizer and talking, we had an up close view of a variety of wildlife such as Eland, Springbok, Wildebeest and Impala, to name a few. The open sky is gorgeous with a million stars. Dinner was amazing each night (we stayed 6 nights) with a different salad, meats (all local wildlife or beef from their cattle farm), vegetables, side dishes and dessert. We ate foods we’ve never eaten before and loved it all!
Breakfast was served each morning inside the main inn. There was always several homemade breads, cereals, yogurt, meats (smoked zebra among several), bacon and eggs cooked to order. Always a great way to start the day.
Each afternoon at 4:00 pm a light baked snack and tea/coffee or other beverage was served - another good time to talk .
Our room was very nice. Ours was one of the newest rooms but we looked inside other vacant rooms and they are all well apportioned perfectly with the Namibian surroundings. Our room was quite spacious and contained a refrigerator. The view out of the front window across the valley and of the mountains was phenomenal. The bed was very comfortable and sleep was never a problem. The shower was also a very nice size and hot water was not a problem. The rooms have WiFi. Although we brought converters and adapters (we are from the USA), there are both on hand if you forget to bring them. There is a laundry basket and each morning the staff cleans the room and takes the dirty laundry, which they wash, dry, fold and return to the room in the afternoon.
The staff are very pleasant and attentive. Then there is Karla, Justus (the owners/hosts), Schalk (he does it all!), and Denae - truly the best hosts we have ever had - ever. They are warm, friendly, genuine and just genuinely good people.
While many folks come here to hunt, many also come either as they are passing by through Namibia or like us, to have a relaxing time away from the craziness of ‘life’. The pool is quite refreshing and relaxing as well - where else can you swim and watch wildlife at the same time?
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the land and all of the wildlife we saw; the sunset drive up to the highest peak on the property; the excursion to see the Bushmen; the trip into town; and just relaxing in the morning or afternoon.
I couldn’t give a better recommendation of the Ohange (means ‘peace’) Lodge. We will miss the views, the wildlife, the relaxation and most definitely, we will miss Karla, Justus, Schalk and Denae!
